Re: Cardiff Council are killing the City.
This thread is a congregation of over the hill, 1980s thinking, backward, boring, unimaginative men.
Cities, at least decent ones at that, are more and more being designed NOT for cars. The future is now. If they're taking advantage of the situation to force through some progressive utilisation of space then sod it. The city more than survives fine when the street is shut on the umpteen days a year castle street (and a few others!) is shut for events. People have travelled to city and town centres since their inception, i'm not sure castle street, the cities most visually appealing street being closed will scare people off.
Covid or the internet might put people off coming in, a road closure won't. Road closures in the majority of cases don't affect high street trade.
Castle Street should be utilised as a place to socialise, not for pollution and through traffic. Sorry if that doesn't fit personal agendas, people will still travel if they chose to make it a permanent, semi permanent or seasonal arrangement.

Re: Cardiff Council are killing the City.
I can’t be bothered to read all 10 pages of this thread, so apologies if this has already been covered.
Cardiff has the fourth worst air quality in the UK, and the area outside the castle is the most polluted in the City.
The council have been looking to do this for a while, and the virus has given them the opportunity (see attached article from January of this year).
I was down there today, and I really like it, and hope it’s a big success.
Remember, people hated it when the council closed and pedestrianised Queen Street and St Mary Street, but it’s improved the city centre.
The big issue is, many people hate change.

Castle St has been a thorn in the Council's side for a while now because of NO2 pollution caused by through traffic. The excuse to close the street gets them off the hook. Trouble is it just moves the problem somewhere else in the city, probably Western Avenue as there are now very limited bridges to cross the city, what with Castle st bridge and Wood st bridge closed to private vehicles.
Countering the city's desire to clean the air is our obsession with speed bumps. I've travelled all over UK and never come across anywhere like Cardiff for them. Each one makes cars, buses, lorries brake then accelerate increasing NO2 levels from exhausts and particulate matter from brakes.
And where do we have them?, outside schools, just crazy really. Most towns have illuminated signs warning motorists of schools and they have the advantage of only operating when schools are open. Our speed bumps are there 24/7

Sorry it wasn't done deliberately because i couldn't think of an answer or anything. I get what you say but soon they will have to go to 1 Metre + like everywhere else and then there will be. In addition to that I'd like to see how many people actually use Castle St on an average day (Not the fisrt dat in glorious sunshine) before I'd estimate whether it would be too busy to allow pedestrians to socially distance. But Queen St would be doable as would the Hayes with no problem, and there are far more Cafe's and Restaurants round the Hayes than in Castle St.

I'd argue that closing St Mary St helped. It certainly didn't help the buses or the businesses.

If it's popular enough then how about both.

People will probably turn up, hang out for a while, eat and leave just as they would when going out for lunch normally. Some might stay a bit longer but 2 hours is plenty of time for most people. Comes across like you're grasping a bit for problems now

Re: Cardiff Council are killing the City.
240 seats isn’t many to be honest, if more people start going out it will be wedged. Been to a few pubs in the Forest of Dean last few days. All completely fine, wouldn’t notice much difference to normal, plenty of space and people acting as we did before.....

You are honestly insufferable. Is there anything you don't make snide remarks about? You are an actual dementor.
I realise your dated opinions probably mean you won't understand that reference.

Re: Cardiff Council are killing the City.
Wales on Line posted 10 rules for the place today.
apparently you can only sit there and eat oif you have ordered food from the 12 or so places who have signed up to the app.
you must have the app on your phone
you must agree to take part in the trace and test, whether this is with the app or not I'm not sure.
you can only order alcohol if you order at least £10 worth of food.
time limit 2 hours.
open for service between 10 AM and 8 PM
THere are others.
I think these will ensure a lot of people don't use it. I got one have never eaten at any of the places on the 'approved' list and haven't even heard of half of them. I'm sure my first mealat one isn't going to be cold carried half way down a street.
The full WOL report is here.

Totally agree but the fact is it’s not in charge of its own destiny.
Online shopping is killing the high street and for example a return ticket from Caerphilly to Cardiff is around £8 is quite pathetic.
I’m all for Castle street to be pedestrianised but there has to be push and pull

I've spent over 30 mins sat at their tables this week and ordered 2 drinks, but I'm still waiting for both.
That area on castle st would, I am sure, have been full this evening. It is in the wrong place; the food will be cold when it gets there and I am sure that organisationally it will be a car crash at first, but I actually think it might be OK overall. Did they need to close Castle St? No of course not, the parasols should have been put at the top and bottom ends of st marys street where the bars and restaurants are. Is closing Castle ST a good idea? Short term, no. And a clever council would take advantage of the unique situation where town is basically closed for a third of the year and redesign bus routes etc, to make it a good idea long term. This thread suggests that this has not happened. But nevertheless it might be quite nice to have somewhere else to sit outside this summer, and the city clearly needs the additional capacity.
I think the crimes of closing Castle St should be separated from the parasol thingy. I think the latter could be a nice addition to the city centre for the summer.

Up and running today. About half full when I went past, a few boxes of food on the tables but not much happening. It all seemed very relaxed, we'll soon see if it catches on.
The ordering site with a list of the menus here if anyone's thinking of going down. I'm sure Wok to Walk was on it earlier, eleven places involved doesn't seem like many. I guess others are having a look to see how it goes before they commit.
