Re: EUROS thread. Monday 24th June 2024.
I'm watching Italy v Croatia and, although Italy have had the better opportunities and they should be probably two goals up, it is what the Spain game sounds like.
Boring.
The Italian Centre forward (Retegui is it?) is very average, seemingly needing an age to hurt Croatia.
In fact the players on show in the whole tournament thus far seem very average.

The penalty is absolute nonsense.

Now that makes things interesting..,

Modric misses pelanty then redeems himself with a goal seconds later wow!

Ball heading towards goal struck an outstretched, raised arm. Yes it was close to him but arm blocked a goalbound effort.
Good call for me. As mentioned Modric saw his kick saved but has since scored.

Whoever that woman is on 5live is ****ing awful. Shut the **** up about the flares. Ive finally cracked and muted it. The change in her voice as she got excited gave me an immediate headache.

It was ball to hand. The modern interpretation is pure bollocks.

When we beat Croatia it was explained by them being ‘over the hill’.

In fairness I thought the same after their defeat to Spain and in the early part of the game today, I saw nothing to change my mind.
I'm glad for the "elderly" players like Modric but I don't think they'll get much further.
Edit: if they qualify that is. Italy just equalise!!!! Wowza :yikes:

Re: EUROS thread. Monday 24th June 2024.
What a finish.
Last kick goal for Italy. 1 - 1 and Italy qualify.

Great finish
Croatia playing safe and its bitten them on the ass

Exactly, 4 minutes to go, they have a free kick just outside the Italians box and instead of trying to score, they try to waste time.
Attack, attack, attack

Re: EUROS thread. Monday 24th June 2024.
Sickener for Croatia , I'm guessing 2 points won't even see them through as one of the best 3rd place finishers.

It might but it relies on England winning by 3 goals and both Czechia and Georgia losing (from what I can work out)

As I’ve said before in this thread, this tinkering about with substitutes in the final minutes, knackers teams up.
Game would have been finished long time ago.
You can’t tell me, fit, professional athletes can’t last another 10 minutes !
The ones coming on are not up to the pace of the game anyway
Manager/head coaches fault
-
Re: EUROS thread. Monday 24th June 2024.
If you hadn’t made those substitutions, they wouldn’t have added the time on, you plank
Zlatko Dalic took aim at the “nonsense” decision to add eight minutes of time to Croatia’s match against Italy, having seen Mattia Zaccagni score with the very last action to leave his side all but out of the European Championship
Zaccagni’s goal followed an opener by Luka Modric that seemed to have given Croatia second place. But Italy dramatically leapfrogged them and Dalic, who has taken Croatia to second- and third-placed finishes at the past two World Cup tournaments, knows two points are unlikely to send them to the last 16. He suggested the extended period of added time given*by the refe*ree, Danny *Makkelie, was a symbol of the authorities’ *attitude to a nation that punches above its*weight.
“We are a small country,” he said. “No one gave us so much thought but you can’t have eight minutes, it is a nonsense. I don’t want to cause a fuss about what’s gone on but *Croatia needs to be respected, recognised and acknowledged. Unfortunately we have to stand up for ourselves. I want to thank the lads for their commitment and effort.
“[The outcome] really hurts. It still hurts and will hurt over the coming days and months. It’s not easy, but when we look in general there are some days when it is your day some it is not, occasionally you lose. That is football

That may be the rules these days but I think they are stupid, old fruit.

Re: EUROS thread. Tuesday 25th June 2024.
I think you can find 8 minutes in almost every game, and I do agree that Croatia brought a lot of it on themselves with the tactics and late subs. Was 8 mins consistent with how the time that has been added in this tournament so far… probably quite debatable.
They definitely have a gripe when it comes to the end of the game though, Italy scored well within the added time and celebrated for 2 minutes… and then the ref blows up immediately at the restart. That’s an obvious issue that leaves a bad taste in the mouth for me, even if very unlikely to change the end result.

Italy scored in the 98th minute. There were only seconds left when the ball hit the back of the net.
-
Re: EUROS thread. Tuesday 25th June 2024.
41 seconds… like I said it almost certainly makes no difference to the end result, but it doesn’t help the perception of a referee applying the extra time fairly
-
Re: EUROS thread. Tuesday 25th June 2024.
Netherlands v Austria the pick from the 5pm games.
I would have thought Slovenia could have caused an upset v England as they've looked better than Serbia who England laboured past, but I think with their backs are against the wall England will pick out a result, Gallagher rumoured to be a change for TAA so they may improve in the middle..still got gaps all over the pitch and a striker who drops too deep so not a forgone conclusion.

You raise an interesting point - how long is usually allowed between a team scoring and the other team kicking off before a referee starts adding time on? Should the clock be stopped the second a goal is scored and be started again the moment the other side kicks off?
A ref would obviously be expected to add time on if a goal celebration was over the top, but is it usual to consider the clock as stopped the second as a goal is scored? I'd be surprised if it was.

It's a fair point and I genuinely have no idea how it's supposed to work.. I would see a celebration and all the associated performance after a goal very different as say the time it takes a player to go over and take a throw in or a corner, but I suspect by the rules you are probably right.
Regardless, with how technology is these days there's really no reason time added on needs to be so imprecise and judgement based. Even if we say a running clock is heretical and too much of a break with tradition, it would be quite simple to add x for every y taken over a dead ball situation, injury, substitution etc... and then round it to the nearest minute. I suspect you'd quite quickly see an end to the worst of the time wasting and the tracking technology is there to easily do it, at least at the higher levels of the game.

This playing out from the back nonsense is shite for them so far

I’ve always thought taking the time keeping away from the ref is the best solution. He has enough to concentrate on as it is.
Clock should be stopped everytime there’s a substitution, injury and a goal celebration, then restarted when play resumes.
Take a leaf out of Rugby league and sound a hooter on the 90th minute.

3-2 Austria, what a game! Austria impressive

Re: EUROS thread. Tuesday 25th June 2024.
So unfair how the goalkeeper has to stay on his line, whilst the penalty taker can stutter his run up as much as he wants.

I agree. For each hesitation by the taker the keeper should be able to take a stride

This. I can’t stand the stop starting thing, I thought you weren’t allowed to stop at all once you start a run up. I’d change the rule to once you start you can’t stop, stutter or any of that nonsense.
