Looking forward to watching Tankiewicz who can’t be much older than 16 or 17.
Probably Jake Davies I think

Yes, probably - his first game at this level I believe.

Wigley and Jeffries involved maybe?

Yes, Wigley was involved in the pre season games wasn’t he.
Half time in the under 21s game and quite a bit to admire so far. 1-0 to City as their press worked to present Troy Perrett that the took very well. Sheffield United started the better, but City were on top in the closing stages of the half when Jac Thomas came very close to making it 2-0 - there’s also been a goal for City probably correctly disallowed for offside.
-
Re: The Bluebirds Academy and DVP thread...
Finished 1-1, City had to do a lot of defending in the second half and a draw was the least the visitors deserved by the end.

Re: The Bluebirds Academy and DVP thread...
Team for the under 18s game at Hull that kicks off in about ten minutes time.

U21s drawn against Stockport, Burnley and defending champions QPR in the Premier League Cup.

Wonder if Giles is injured, seemingly not considered yesterday & didn't feature for the u21s this week

Off on loan soon I suspect, but it’s a surprise to see us so short of left back options and Giles being virtually ignored.

Papirnyk (2) and Walsh with the goals
A fair few new names to me in the u18 side

Here’s under 21 side that’s playing today at Crewe. It’s currently half time and someone’s Tweeted that we’re 1-0 up.

Amazingly still feels like a reasonably young u21 side, Pearce the only one who is 21? Certainly seems more worthwhile than when we'd have a large group of players seemingly brought in to play for the u21s/23s at the top end of that age range

We played Aston Villa, Boro and Crewe. Crewe were by far the best side out of the three (u18s) We lost, but they battered us in terms of how they played the game. We beat Villa though. I always wonder who was playing in that Crewe side as they were producing some good players fron the late eighties up until the mid to late 90s.

Think one or two of the players brought in from other clubs this summer may be 20/21.
The goalkeeper Higgs is very young as well apparently.
BBM said something interesting last week when he said that quite often at clubs where you get a kind of golden generation come through like we had with the group that formed such a big part of the successful Wales under 17 squad, you then get a few quiet years when nothing much comes through, but it’s not like that here. It’s very encouraging that that the Welsh under 16 squad named last week had six City players in it.

What happened to Matthew Apter, Is he involved with the first team or injured?

Finished 3-0 - Tankiewicz got a second.

He got what sounded like quite a serious injury - think it might have been in the game at Merthyr.

Who was in that squad and what success did they achieve? Not a rhetorical question, I haven’t got a clue about the Welsh youth teams.

First Welsh age group squad to qualify for a major finals tournament since the early 80s and they did it again in the next tournament. From memory, City supplied eight of the squad first time around and six or seven second time - there were also players like Biancheri, Crew and Benjamin who’d left us at 16 to sign for Premier League clubs in the first squad (not sure Biancheri was in the second squad).

Have any of them gone on to do anything significant?

Got it. So, in truth, we’ve no idea if they are a golden generation or not. That phrase is daft in my opinion, and it gets used far too freely.

Pretty much, though you could argue they were a golden generation for Wales youth by qualifying back to back, something Wales hadn't done at any age grade before. They then got close to the u19s Euros but got a very tough "Elite round" of England, Portugal & Turkey. As far as seniors goes who knows, the jump from youth to senior football is big at Cardiff & District level nevermind professional football!
They'll probably make up the bulk of the Wales u21 side for the next cycle at the least so we'll see if they can have an impact there and improve our dismal record at that level. That is if they're not involved in the seniors, Crew's been capped already, Lawlor, Kpakio & Kai Andrews all been in a squad
So we'll see. If we could get 4 or 5 regular internationals out of that bunch that would be very good going

That’s why I said a kind of golden generation - it’s the best group the club has had since the Academy was opened in 04/05 in terms of first team appearances already I suspect.

The last time that dreaded phrase was being bandied about was when Morison was here. That didn’t end well for half of the players who were so labelled.

This all started because I used the term “a kind of golden generation” as a simple way to summarise what BBM was talking about - i didn’t label it a golden generation. I won’t say he used the term himself because I’m not sure that he did. Whether he did or not though, it was incidental to the point he was making - when a club has a strong group of youth players in one year it can often follow that the groups which come through in subsequent years can be disappointing, but this isn’t the case at City.

I presume that there is some cleansing to improve Board performance that requires this and other large threads like Glammy to be temporarily moved

This is an important football thread - it has no place in Cranks Corner - move it back

Temporary measure. Deleting some old threads. Didn't want to remove by mistake

The club put up a very short training vid today. One of the coaches (I think it was Kevin Gibbins) was shouting instructions to ‘Luey’. I didn’t make out Giles in the clip (just watched it once) but I assume it was him - training with the First Team.

Games for the seniors, under 21s and under 18s today. The last named are playing a “derby” game at Wrexham, no news of any score yet.
