VAR penalty check. Ref goes to the screen. "He's not been sent over there to watch Coronation Street".:hehe: Good line - maybe just me :-)
Oh - and 2-0!

To be fair to myself, I only realised as I saw it on Twitter and Tyldesley's just mentioned it! I don't have the mental capacity to figure out the 3rd place permutations! :hehe:
Romania, Netherlands, Austria, Turkey, England, Slovakia, Switzerland & Italy in one half of the draw. Spain, Georgia, Germany, Denmark, Portugal, Slovenia, France and Belgium in the other! As it stands

I've given up trying to work out the game to game permutations. I think the only confirmed R16 one is Switzerland v Italy, but I'm probably wrong.
Sorry. Germany v Denmark and France v Belgium too

Re: EUROS thread. Wednesday 26th June 2024.
Wins for Georgia and Turkey see them through.
Czech are out and Hungary are out as well after finishing the 5th 3rd placed team.

England now have another 3 games to find some form for the final

Re: EUROS thread. Wednesday 26th June 2024.
Have to say England are incredibly lucky here.

That looks incredibly lop sided.
Huge chance for England now and they haven't got out of second gear yet.
It could well be their year as they are playing poorly but getting the rub of the green.

Fair point, though Belgium were well on top and had 2 tight goals disallowed. Slovakia then followed that result up with defeat to Ukraine and a draw with Romania. I think its fair to say England are fortunate to go from a potential game against Netherlands to Slovakia whilst the real heavy hitters are all in the other side of the draw

Don’t think any team deserved to qualify from group C really, bit of a poor advert for football.

Agreed, generally speaking the games have got more b9ring the longer the tournaments gone on - time for a change of format I’d say. How about a straight knock out involving thirty two teams with a simultaneous plate competition for those knocked out in the First Round?

The crowds have been brilliant. I’d guess the people who actually attend these tournaments would strongly disagree with you. I think there are too many teams involved, but the group stage is obviously an important element of such a tournament. At least the supporters of the worst performing teams get a minimum of three games.

Some of the knockout games now will be ruined by teams playing defensively, just stop them scoring in the hope they can win on penalties, they need to change that. If it's a draw, the team with the most on-target shots wins, or if that's the same just shots, if the same corners, or something along those lines.
They need to change rules to make football more about attacking than who has the best defence and is good at taking penalties.

You couldn't possibly find an easier route to the final than the England side of the draw, Germany and Spain should meet fairly early, although there have been some odd results so far already, so you never can tell.

I guess that depends how you look at it. The bottom half of the draw includes the Euro 2020 champions and runners-up, and two of the five European quarter-finalists from the 2022 World Cup (one, Croatia, has already been eliminated).
It does look weaker on paper, but I think much of that is perception based on past glories rather than current form.

On FIFA rankings England's half has the two lowest ranked sides. 11 of the top 13 ranked countries from UEFA have made this stage - 5 in England's half, 6 in the other half of the draw. England's half contains the UEFA teams ranked 3rd, 5th, 8th and 10th while the other half contains the teams ranked 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th and 9th.
I think that, had France and Belgium been in opposite halves of the draw as the top two ranked European teams, there would be nothing between either half in terms of being stronger or not.

After the debacle of Russia in 2018, euros in Baku and the farce in Qatar it’s just great to see a proper tournament again with loads of fans present and noisy…..gutting we didn’t make it, let’s hope we make the next World Cup at least, at least it’s one that’s attendable

I don't like watching defensive football, although sometimes in sport you can admire the tactic.
Wales v Ireland in the egg was outstanding https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12ruyY7hq5k
I don't think its great viewing in terms of football but at the end of the day the smaller less favourable team is going to do what its got to do, you cant just change rules because something is boring. Celtic beating Barca etc.

I watched the game last night and he was playing in a different position for his country. They played him in a mobile front two and he ended up doing a lot of defending from deep central positions. Stick him on the left while giving him the freedom to roam and he will cause mayhem for any Champions League level team.

He scored an easy chance, created by a terrible pass by a Portuguese player.
After that he lost the ball numerous times and when he went down in the centre circle as if he was shot, well that was just embarrassing, as the replay showed
Still not convinced
Stop press:—— forgot, he missed a sitter in the second half

You need to go through the teams and see who everybody is playing for. Not everybody is lucky enough to have a team of star players build around them like Messi & Ronaldo

Can’t understand a word of that
If you’re try to suggest he’s a star, playing in a team of nobody’s, that makes it worse, as he should be setting an example, like Bale & Ramsey

Agree with this. You have to have a group stage. 18 months of qualifying, just to go out after one match? It would be a massive anti-climax for 16 countries.
You'd need to expand it to 32 teams if it was knockout all the way, and then that's more than half of the countries in UEFA.

I'm not a fan of that idea. It's pretty easy for a pro to get a shot on target from anywhere in the opposition half. It's a lot less skill than is needed to score a penalty.
You say about teams playing defensively to get to penalties, but if I was a coach with this system I'd be looking to get a healthy lead on shots in the first half, and then play 7 at the back to block everything in the second half. Sounds much worse than a penalty shootout.
I just had a look at the last Euros. Only four shootouts in 15 knockout games. I don't think it's a problem.

To me, it’s a TEAM game and should not be down to an individual to decide who goes through and who is out.
Most corners first, then bookings, you fail as a team, not an individual

Georgia are behind the Faroe Islands, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Lithuania and Malta in the UEFA rankings, and they have just qualified for the knockout stages of a major tournament, yet it's just this one player who is holding them back :hehe:

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but you spent half of last season having orgasms over a team that made football more about being defensive and was good at set pieces than about being more about attacking. :sherlock:

As Dembe said, that wasn't directed at you or anyone other than NCB. I lost count of the number of times he was delighted with us trying to be hard to beat, how it never mattered how we won or how we scored. If we created nothing at all during a game but scored with 1 attempt from a set piece after surviving chance after chance on our goal, that was fine.
Now, and somewhat confusingly, he's not a fan of teams playing for penalties and wants them to show more attacking intent, which was the polar opposite to our tactics for most of last season. I see the humour in this situation.

That's why more than one player takes a penalty in the shootout.
If a team is drawing and 4-0 up on corners with 20 minutes left, they'll just park the bus to go through. I don't see how this makes the game any better.

Good post, that wouldn't work but for knockout games, there has to be a better way of deciding than penalties.
The first rounds of games were good, attacking and entertaining, but the last set were defensive and more non scoring, lets see what happens with the knockouts and if lots of teams shut up shop.

It was mostly in reply to dampen down your negativity, if we win one nil I'll take it, it's a league anyway and completely different, plus I have no team in the Euros so would prefer to see good football.
The same at home next season, the football needs to improve on Bulut's phase two.
