Crap signings - Meite, Panzo, Runarsson, Diedhiou, Ugbo, Wilson-Esbrand.
I might have missed some out. I think the club's record on "very good" signings over the last year isn't great at all, but that is also where our standing is in the division. We're not in the mix with the top teams when it comes to spending, but then it is possible to do far better than we did last season without spending huge amounts if you have a very good recruitment process. We don't and Bulut hasn't yet proved to be someone to dramatically improve our recruitment.

Do you know for a fact that the player is 'edging towards choosing Portsmouth over us?' and is he doing it because of the comment or was he 'edging' before?
There would be no need for Dalman brief him to say what he said, if the club are not that interested all they need to do is stop talking to his agent.
No, just like you, I’m guessing, but I’ve been following how clubs behave in the transfer market for decades and he wasn’t our our first choice anyway is an excuse that they can come out with when a transfer target opts to go elsewhere.

I wouldn't class Phillips as a very good signing. I thought he was alright, not terrible, but the defence was far from secure with him in it (it seemed more so before he arrived) and I'm hoping Chambers will be an upgrade. Wasn't convinced by Phillips at all.

Think that's a bit unfair.
I thought Phillips did well

Given the choice of one of last seasons loan signings returning, I’d rather have Grant.

That's fair enough. It's all about opinions.
Results while Phillips was in the team:
Norwich 4 Cardiff 1
Cardiff 1 Hull 3
Millwall 3 Cardiff 1
Cardiff 1 Middlesbrough 4
Rotherham 5 Cardiff 2
While those results were obviously not down to Phillips alone, I felt the defence was more secure with the Goutas / McGuinness partnership than with Goutas / Phillips.

I should have added McGuinness looked good for most of the season until he was injured, we look like we have three decent centre backs now, obviously can’t comment on the Japanese player yet

I get what you're saying but have an excuse ready and actually pushing the alleged target in the opposite direction are worlds apart. I just think it was an odd thing to say when negotiations are supposedly on-going. As I say, the club can just stop talking if they have no interest. It's almost like he is saying, "Well Cardiff didn't want him anyway" when he isn't in a position to make that call. He could at least have added a caveat to make it clear it was just his personal opinion.
We'll just have to wait and see what happens. :tumbleweed:

Cardiff City in talks to sign former Aston Villa and Ajax winger
The Bluebirds are hoping to close on an ambitious deal for the Netherlands international.
Cardiff City are in talks to sign Netherlands international winger Anwar El Ghazi, WalesOnline understands.
The Bluebirds have wanted to bolster at the top end of the pitch this summer and are addressing key areas of weakness which Erol Bulut identified last term.
They have brought in Chris Willock on a free from QPR, while they are nearing the completion of a loan move for Hertha BSC front man Wilfried Kanga.
And now, City are launching an ambitious attempt to seal the signing of winger El Ghazi. The 29-year-old is likely best known for his four years playing at Aston Villa, whom he helped to achieve promotion out of the Championship to the Premier League. In the 2020/21 campaign, he netted 10 goals in 28 top-flight games for Villa.
Having been reared in the famous Ajax academy, El Ghazi turned out for the Amsterdam side early in his career and impressed with 23 goals and 16 assists across 100 appearances. His talent caught the eye of French side Lille, where he played for two years before moving to then Championship side Villa.
He had a brief loan spell with Everton in 2022 but was used just twice. He returned to PSV in the summer of 2022 and his form reignited. He netted nine times in 33 games for the Dutch side before seeking a new challenge in Germany with Mainz last September.
It was a short-lived stint with Mainz, though. El Ghazi was suspended by the club after he posted a pro-Palestinian message on Instagram amid the 2023 Israel-Palestine conflict, which included the phrase "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free."
He later expressed, "Every individual, be it in Palestine or elsewhere, has the right to security, a loving home, and opportunities to grow."
Following his remarks, Mainz's official Instagram account was temporarily deactivated. Mainz notified El Ghazi of their intention to terminate his contract on October 27 due to his controversial social media post. Nevertheless, he was reinstated on October 31 after clarifying his position, stating he stands "for peace above everything" and advocating for "more empathy", emphasizing the importance of understanding the history behind the conflict.
Mainz, however, let him go a week later. The decision followed El Ghazi's rejection of the club's claim that he had retracted his original statement. He wrote on social media at the time: "I do not distance myself from what I said and stand for humanity and on the side of the oppressed until the last day I breathe."
Significantly, however, a German court ruled on July 12 that El Ghazi was unfairly dismissed by Mainz. The club had to pay more than £1m in lost salary earnings to the winger. He is, however, yet to be paid and wants to officially terminate his contract in order to potentially seal a move to Cardiff. Given the complications, we are told there is still some way to go before a deal can be concluded.
On the pitch, El Ghazi would no doubt represent a high-quality addition. On a free transfer, it looks excellent value. He has more than 100 goal involvements (64 goals, 39 assists) in 301 senior appearances and has played all of his football in top-flight leagues across, barring the one season in which he got promoted out of the Championship with Villa.

El Ghazi would be a quality signing, villa fan I know really rates the guy

Good signing if they can pull it off

Re: The Transfer Window Rumours thread
Wasn’t too enthusiastic about Kanga when I first heard of our interest in him, but I’ve been won round a bit since then - he has to be a step up from what we’ve got in that position.

On what grounds have you been won round, Paul? I think it’s a genuinely interesting signing and I’ve thought from the start that he could be anything, although based on past City signings I’m not putting any store in his goals in Belgium.

A Twitter conversation with a Hertha fan who said he thought Kanga could do a good job for us, his videos show him scoring lots of different types of goal and I was surprised by how high his transfer value was. As I said a few days ago, his CV is strange, but he did well in Switzerland with a team that were playing in European competitions, so it was a decent standard, possibly better in Switzerland.

Re: The Transfer Window Rumours thread
In pretty certain if Glatzel was signing for someone and opinions were asked here a number would say he's a good player but we didn't play to his strengths (which I still don't know what they actually were).

Re: The Transfer Window Rumours thread
Sorba Thomas gone to Nantes? Interesting one considering some of the problems facing the clubs because of the TV deal or lack of one ?

I thought I saw a post the other day saying a new TV deal has been agreed.

It has. Not as good as the previous deal but enough to keep the clubs from going bust.

He's a good finisher and from memory had some decent movement, not at all suited to how Warnock wanted to play though so a strange signing

Lots of Warnock signings were 'strange' ones.

Anwar El Ghazi is having a medical at Cardiff today ahead of signing a one-year deal. Player has already travelled.
Has a top track record on the pitch and should add some much-needed goals from the wide area

Re: The Transfer Window Rumours thread
No denying City are having a go this summer if this one comes off. Get a quality midfielder who’s good at the things we lack in and we could be top six challengers.

20th according to some and the bookies...........

Re: The Transfer Window Rumours thread
Couple more signings of this quality and I might start believing in a plucky eighth finish.

Thought that was a bit low, but I could understand it at the end of last season. Think the signings of Willock and Chambers were a sign that this summer could be different from the last two, but, even if El Ghazi signs, we still look an unbalanced squad, bring in a Jotdon Mutch type midfielder though and we could be a contender.

I think we'll do OK with those three (if he signs) Kanga, O'Dowda back, Ramsey (if he stays fit and is rested) playing further back, and the premier loans it will be promising!

Re: The Transfer Window Rumours thread
Looks like a definite strategy this window to spend on salaries rather than fees. Probably quite shrewd.
