The fat lady is about to sing!
Until Crane came in, no Glamorgan batsman had managed more than 25 apart from Tribe. Still early days, but the opinion that our four day batting is weaker than last season is beginning to look justified - Byrom couldn’t get in the side last season and yet he’s opening now, there’s nothing in Zain Ul Hassan’s career so far to suggest he can bat in the top three of a First Division team and Dickson is a step down from Northeast in the four day game at least.
The bowling has options. The batting already looks a worry. Unlucky to lose kellaway.
It's going to be a long season in Division one
Glamorgan 91-4 at lunch. Surprised they opted to bat on winning the toss as that score suggests it’s a typical modern day Cardiff wicket whereby ~the team batting first concedes a pretty big first innings lead and often ends up losing. I’ve not watched any of this morning’s play, so don’t know what the pitch is like, maybe they’re expecting it to break up and favour spin in the fourth innings?
150-4 now
Dickson getting some runs for the first time.
334-7 at the close, 90s for Carlson and Dickson and Crane is closing in on his half century. It looks a flat wicket now mind.
403-8 at the moment with Crane on his highest ever 2st class score of 79
Out stumped for 99. Gutted for him.
Saw a clip of a podcast earlier with 'experts' picking their XI for the 1st Test.
Michael Vaughan didnt want to play James Rew at opener so moved Bethel to open with Joe Root batting at 3, which everyone else hated. Bumble picked both Asa Tribe and Mason Crane in his.
Can this thread be moved to the alternative threads. It's very annoying
This will get more traffic over the summer than the yet-to-start World Cup thread
Glamorgan saved yesterday's game comfortably in the end, but, three games in and it's hard to see how and where the wins are coming from. The pitch for the Leicestershire game was of the type that gives the four day game a bad name - I was hoping we'd move on a bit from. Sophia Gardens roads, but that was as bad as we've had in years, I think I'm right in saying that, after seven wickets fell on the first day, there were only four per day after that, so not even twenty wickets fell during g four full days play.
Despite us never being in danger of losing, there was still time for Byrom and Ul Hassan to fail again - the latter is particularly frustrating because he isn't dismissed really cheaply too often, but he scores so slowly that he has serious trouble getting past, say, thirty, this is a failing he's had throughout his time as a first team player at glamorgan and he's been here long enough now for me to think he's never going to kick on from his present level.
So, two out of our first three are turning in figures that are a serious problem for a side wanting to stay in the First Division, while the batting as a whole is scoring its runs a lot more slowly that they were doing in the Second Division - we've got pretty big totals in both of our first innings at Cardiff so far, but it's taken so long for us to score them as our scoring rate drops lower and lower the longer we bat.
I think Hadley has done okay so far - he's been a pretty consistent wicket taker and Crane has shown that he can take wickets at First Division level if there is a bit in the pitch for him, while Van Der Gugten is still a quality performer, but the bowling cupboard looks pretty bare apart from that.
Hopefully, Kellaway will be back against Hampshire on Friday which will give the team more batting and bowling depth, but we should be scouring the loan market for a top order batsman and a better third seam bowler than we have at present.
Fair summary after 3 games. Cricket in div 1 was always going to be hard enough without being 2 down before you start. Unfair pressure on tribe and Carlson in particular for me, although Carlson has stood up very well thus far. Nice to see Dickson get runs - can he keep it going at potentially bat at 3?
Why oh Why is Ul Hassan in the squad
Glamorgan 89-1 at lunch after being put in. Tribe out for 45, Ul Hassan 34 not out. Carlson’s batting at 3, with Kellaway at 4 and McIlroy has come in for Gorvin.
This knock should do Ul Hassan the world of good. At what point does Carlson come into England consideration?
The thing about Carlson is that because he’s been playing so long, people assume he’s older than he is - just looked on Wikipedia and it says he’s only 27. He’s getting First Division runs today with a century at better than a run a ball, he’s 112 at tea with Ul Hassan on 87 - I’ve had a go at him in this thread, but I really hope he gets a century because I’m sure it’d do him a world of good.
Glamorgan 262-1 at tea and, after my whingeing about their run rate, they’re going at more than four an over.
The downside is that it looks like another feather bed of a pitch, but, after being put in, all they can do is try to keep on piling up the runs.
Hampshire lost Liam Dawson to injury just before the game started, so, maybe there might be something in the pitch for our spinners because that’s one aspect of the game where we definitely look stronger than Hampshire.
It wasn't the most flamboyant of innings but a lovely moment for ul Hassan. Well done to him.
He's just got to his first First Class century (off 251 balls). His highest before today was 69 in over 30 matches. Hope it does him the world of good.
When he contributes 20 off say 60 balls, he doesn't add anything to the team, so its hard to justify his place, but if he can score big in a day, then add support to the spinners then why not.
353-1 at the close of play.
Great start to this one. Let's hope the weather doesn't scupper their good position.
I don’t think I’ll get the chance to say Glamorgan have collapsed to 500-5 in the time I have left in my life, so I’ll say it now :hehe:. Carlson and Ul_Hassan took their partnership to 318 before the latter was run out and poor Ben Kellaway went for a Duck. Carlson got his double hundred, eventually falling for 209, and Ingram was out for 32 - Dickson is continuing his improved form though with 35 not out.
Are we attempting to stay up due to batting points?
536-7 declared, Dickson 54 not out.
Quite an encouraging morning for Glamorgan - Hampshire 101 - 3.
getting better 132-5 crane starting to make things happen
