Re: The War starts Putin announces "Military Operation" in Ukraine. Explosions heard in Kyiv
Reading the arrse forum, and watching the likes of the cavill group reports on twitter. It seems like the Ukrainians are in the long process of pulling off an upset of Boreham wood type proportions. They've slaughtered thousands of Russians, bagged their 5th high ranking officer today, and reports of a major Ukrainian counter attack occurring this evening.
It's a situation that no people should ever have to find themselves in. But my god are they fighting.
The rest of the world has let the Ukrainians down big time in the build up to this. We really need to step up and help them rebuild their country when they finally kick the Russians out.

I think it is harsh to say the world has let them down, I would say the silver lining of this tragedy so far as been how the west, Europe and nations from all over the world have united against Putin.
Even Russian allies like China and India are staying relatively quiet on the topic.
We should take a small amount of pride in the UK, that we called for and set some precedent for the strongest sanctions.
It is also high risk to directly send arms into a conflict against Russia (if you want to avoid them turning their attention to you) and the UK sent high amount of serious weaponry before any other nation.
We should continuously push for more, and keep turning the screw, there is still a lot more we can do.

I think US let them down by not letting the have Patriot missiles months ago when the could have had time to train the Ukrainian Military in its use (apparently it takes more than 6 months). And other countries were lukewarm about letting them have military equipment
But then Putin may have seen that as a provocation and moved in earlier before fhey were ready to use it.

Here in Poland the value of the Zloty has crashed 9% in just a couple of days.Nearly 1/2 million refugees, already having a major impact on the Polish economy.

Well it's clearly not ALL for show. The Rouble has dropped to the value of a penny, the Russian stock exchange has been closed these past few days, and oligarchs are having their assets seized. Or are the aforementioned not really happening?

Which further sanctions would you like the UK government to implement?

The MP chairing the cross party group on sanctions said on the news yesterday that oligarch sanctions in the UK have an 18 month lead time.
There are simple ways around it but the govt was resisting. I don't know why.

not give the oligarchs 30 days to move their.money somewhere else for a start.
perhaps some of the hundreds more sanctions that other countries have applied?

Okay, fair enough. I wasn't aware that they had 30 days grace to remove their assets. That does seem absurd.

They need emergency legislation to speed up sanctions against Russian oligarchs as they have crippling financially posed lawyers ready , yep some will defend anyone.
A Tory has said its
"amoral” British law firms of working for Putins oligarchs.

Now Russians leaving to go to Finland! Wow, what next?
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-60624500
Part of the above report says:
"Some people are anxious to get out of Russia because there has been a persistent rumour that Putin's government might soon introduce martial law to deal with demonstrations against the invasion of Ukraine. If martial law were introduced, Mr Putin would be free to do what he wanted, without having to worry about damaging protests in the streets. He has already made it clear to French President Emmanuel Macron that he won't stop until he has occupied the whole of Ukraine - and a French official who listened in on their phone call said, afterwards, that things could get a great deal worse.
How? Well, the nuclear option could be getting decidedly closer. It's a frightening prospect.
No wonder Russians who don't want any part of the invasion or the trouble it's creating inside Russian towns and cities are desperate to get out of the country - and make a living for themselves outside."

He will just bomb it more and start sending cruise missiles in probably. I’m sure the Ukrainians will put down their weapons and embrace the invaders then….not. He might well break them but he will never control them. He struggled in Chechnya for years and that has a tiny population in comparison. Think the Russian people will rise up soon….what’s he going to do arrest them all? Shoot his own people?
