I've no idea how you know so much about his personality before the queen became the queen, but ok let's accept you do.
He dated the next in line to throne for however long it was, and then had five years of marriage so I'm going to guess that it didn't come as the greatest of surprises to him.

Controversial he certainly was.

He was pushed towards the Queen by Louis Mountbatten who wanted to be a King Maker. He wanted Phil to become King after George VI.
Re: Duke of Edinburgh dies
I bet Boro fans are relieved, Warnock was just about to offer him a 3 year deal with a years option to extend.

BBC going OTT. Both BBC1 & BBC2 have same news on Phil’s passing. Why?

I found about his death on the BBC Sport website, for some reason. Simulcast across the board.

Mountbatten wanted to be a ‘King Maker’ and run the Royal Family, a true Battenburg, he had Philip in line to be King after George VI died. He wasn’t too happy his plan didn’t work. He then took Charles under his wing and had plans for him.

In 1999
During a walkabout at an Edinburgh electronics factory, Prince Philip remarked that a fusebox bursting with wires looked "as if it was put in by an Indian".

Hours and hours of eulogies on the media of course. It's sad when anyone dies, but let's not pretend that he has been anything other than a privileged boorish snob for decades and decades.....

He’s been much more than that, though each to their own.
