10. Is Mark Grew one of the four West Brom Youth Cup winners?
10. Is Wayne Hughes another one?
Only one answer to get and that is part of question 1 - the only former Cardiff City player other than John Carver to manage Newcastle United
Well done to all those who took part, with a bit of prompting you got them all correct. Here is a summary of the answers
1. Two former Cardiff City players have managed Newcastle United - name them both.
John Carver signed for us from Newcastle in 1985 but after only 15 games a serious thigh injury saw the end of his professional career. He had 2 short spells as caretaker and interim manager of Newcastle. The Newcastle manager between 1958 and 1961 was Charlie Mitten aka “The Bogota Bandit” who had an interesting football history including leaving the country in 1950 to play for Independiente Santa Fe of Colombia and receiving a 6 month ban and a fine of 6 months wages from the FA when he returned. Charlie Mitten was one of many itinerant footballers who played for various teams in wartime dependent upon their posting. He played one game for us in 1941/42 - only once but a Bluebird nevertheless - like Bill Shankly !
2. He won 6 caps for Wales and knocked us out of the FA Cup in 2019 - who is he ?
Steve Lovell - 6 caps for Wales including one goal. He played most of his club football for Millwall and Gillingham. He was involved in a bizarre situation as a striker for the Gills in 1987 when he scored 4 goals in an 8-1 defeat of Southend United and then, the following Saturday, Gillingham beat Chesterfield 10-0 and he didn’t score ! In 2019 he was manager of Gillingham when they knocked us out of the FA Cup - a Premier League scalp and therefore a big deal for the Gills but no surprise for us - Getting knocked out of the FA Cup by a lower league club ? It’s what we do !
3. He played his last game for us in the infamous 6-0 defeat at Deepdale - who is he ?
Stuart Taylor, signed on loan in 2009 replacing Agent Dimi. He appears to be someone who has been content to always be the bridesmaid and not the bride in that he has made only 95 appearances in a 21 year career. I’d forgotten that he was a tall lad. Wiki has got him down as 6’6”
4. Born in Cardiff, we loaned him to Accrington Stanley and he went on to make over 450 league appearances - who is he ?
Joe Jacobson - he played only one game for us in a 2-0 defeat to Barnet in the League Cup on 2006. Joe has played most of his games for Shrewsbury and Wycombe Wanderers in what has been a long and successful career. Joe is Jewish and, other than Benny Fenton, who played Wartime football for us in 1941/42 I don’t know of any any other Jewish footballers have played for us. Anyone know of any others ?
5. He played and scored against the Busby Babes in an FA Youth Cup Final, we signed him as a replacement for Johnny Nicholls and replaced him with Peter Donnelly - who is he ?
Joe Bonson played and scored for Wolves in the 1954 FA Youth Cup Final against the Busby Babes. I may just have seen him play at the end of his City career when my Dad first took me down the City but I don’t remember but I do recall him being referred to as “Joe Bonkers”. His scoring record of 43 goals in 85 games doesn’t seem bad at all but his last season for us was the 1959/60 promotion season so manager Bill Jones must have thought that Peter Donnelly was a better option in Diviosion 1 but he didn’t last long being offloaded to Swansea.
6. Gerald Archibald _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 1934 - 1983
Gerry Hitchens -we haven’t had many players leave us and become England Internationals but Gerry stands out. He spent 8 years in Italy playing for 4 different clubs and, for many years it was generally regarded that it was only him and John Charles who had moved to Italy and made a success of their careers out there, both, of course played for us. Gerry died with his boots on in 1983 having collapsed during a charity match.
7. We were a giant killing victim of this team, they have been managed by 3 City managers, a City first team coach and a former City player - which team is it ?
Weymouth - that was a nightmare, 2-0 up at half time and lost 3-2. Weymouth have been managed by Frank O’Farrell ( General Frank O’ ), Len Ashurst and Bobby Gould, the man who got sacked dragged Ritchie Morgan out with him Graham Williams and former player the admirable Fred Davies.
8. This international played for us on loan and has a name that consists of 10 vowels and 14 consonants - who is he ?
Only one cap for Greece and six games too many for us. I often wondered whether Dimitrios Konstantopoulos was distantly related to the French goalkeeper Dominique Dropsy. Getting himself on the score sheet at the wrong end against Wolves and another high profile blunder against Norwich started the 2009 implosion completed at Preston without him. Wiki has got him down as 6'7" - is he the tallest player to play for the City ?
9. We signed this striker at the age of 36 after quite a high profile career but he could only manage 1 goal and that was against Carmarthen Town before retiring - who is he ?
Kevin Campbell - 21 games and 1 goal in the FAW Cup. 15 of his appearances were from the bench so definitely a non-impact sub. More high profile legs gone strikers were to follow.
10.The 1976 WBA FA Youth Cup winning team contained 4 future Cardiff City players - name them.
Who would have thought that the WBA youth system would have gone on to provide a cavalcade of mediocrity for us in future years. The Final featured Wayne Hughes ( not noted for his matinée idol good looks or footballing ability), Kevin Summerfield ( signed by by Jimmy Goodfellow on a just passing through basis) Lethal/Limited/Listless/Lamentable Lynex and Mark Grew. Mark Grew, however, gets a big tick for his Keith Curle penalty save.
11. The last time The Stones played Ninian Park those of us who were there were disappointed -explain.
Maidstone United are nicknamed The Stones -say no more
12. This former City player was once a Shinty player, managed Ross County and is now a butcher - who is he ?
John Buchanan - a scorer of many memorable goals and a firm favourite -say no more again !
13. He made his debut for us in the same game as Jorn Schwinkendorf - who is he ?
Josh Low - signed from Leyton Orient 1999 he fell out of favour and left for Oldham. I remember him acquiring the nickname J-Lo - he was not quite as memorable as his namesake.
14. We have something on common with them and they have a badge which contains a submarine - which team is it ?
Barrow FC - the other Bluebirds. The submarine on their badge reflects their Naval shipbuilding facilities. Division 3 for a short spell in the 60s was the highlight of their existence before failing to be re-elected to the league in 1972 would explain why we have never played them.
15. Newtown AFC named their ground after a former Cardiff City player - who was he ?
Latham Park, Newtown is named after George Latham MC, he played for us only once but coached the City under manager Fred Stewart in the glory years of the 1920s. He was a Boer War veteran and was awarded the MC in WW1. He also coached the 1920 GB Olympic football team. A person of great achievement and a notable person in the history of Cardiff City.
Only just seen this quiz. I appreciate it takes time but can you do another please?
This is the 9th football quiz I’ve done have you missed the other 8 similar quizzes as well ? I’m preparing another Pub Quiz - no 7 - 40 general knowledge questions which I wil put up tomorrow. I liaise with TOBW to make sure we don’t clash. He is planning a football quiz for Tuesday so I will do another one after that. Trying to do interesting and slightly esoteric football questions which I like takes a bit of time and will take a bit longer the more I do but I will have a go.
I assume Dekel Keinan was Jewish.
