No that's the population of the city of Southampton
Including Portsmouth the metropolitan area of South Hampshire is 1 .6 million

Cardiff UDZ is over 1m.
Bridgend 145,000
Caerphilly 175,000
Vale of Glamorgan 131,800
Cardiff 370,000
Torfaen 92,300
RCT 237,000
Merthyr 58,800
That's the urban area of south east Wales, not the urban area of Cardiff......known as the Cardiff urban area
That's 500 k , not 1 million which includes all those satellite towns like Bridgend and Merthyr which are 20 miles from Cardiff
That's not the same as a built up urban area

There is no local authority for S Hampshire, however the whole of Hampshire ( has 1.4 million population) but has Dorset to the west, Wiltshire to the north-west, Berkshire to the north, Surrey to the north-east, and West Sussex to the east.
Re: Terrible terrible Birmingham
Cardiff Urban Area ....Cardiff and nearby built up areas ......479000
Southampton ......800000
Cardiff Metropolitan Area .......Cardiff , Newport , Bridgend , Valleys , Vale Of Glamorgan .....1 .1 million
Southampton Portsmouth Metropolitan Area .....1.6 million

Southampton & Portsmouth are in the same urban area.

There's no local authority for Cardiff, the Vale, the valleys, Bridgend but its known as the Cardiff metropolitan area , about 800000, 1.1 million including Newport
South Hampshire .....Southampton and Portsmouth, 1.6 million
If we take just Southampton, the city , together with the built up area around it .....the Southampton urban area is about twice the size of Cardiff
Cardiff as a football club has the valleys , Bridgend, the Vale of Glamorgan etc within driving distance but they are not part of Cardiffs urban area ....25 miles away in some cases

Don't engage with him. He's been argumentative and somewhat shell-shocked since Monday evening.
He predicted "The 'Pool" would trounce Crystal Palace 5-0 (and that was just at halftime) and has had a cob on since they flopped. He was supremely confident before their opening fixture at Fulham as well.
Gloom has descended upon the Cowbridge smut king's abode.

You are wrong
Southampton urban area 800k
Cardiff 450 or so
Cardiff is bigger as a city but smaller as an urban area
Nottingham , Newcastle .........both smaller cities than Cardiff ......but far bigger urban built up areas
It makes me laugh when people think Cardiff.....is bigger than .....Newcastle
As a dot on the map maybe but the urban expanse is huge . Go to Newcastle or Nottingham or Southampton , go around the places
Far bigger than Cardiff
South Hampshire is the name given to the population of the Southampton, Portsmouth built up area ..1. 6 million ......that's bigger than the south Wales built up area
You said Hampshire has a population of 1.6 million .......that's only Southampton and Portsmouth.....
Re: Terrible terrible Birmingham
2021 census doesn’t mention S Hampshire, so perhaps they have changed the boundaries
Portsmouth 208,100 104,900 103,200
Southampton 249,000 124,000 125,000
Wealden 160,100 83,000 77,100
Hampshire 1,400,800 716,000 684,700
Basingstoke and Deane 185,200 93,500 91,700
East Hampshire 125,700 64,700 61,000
Eastleigh 136,400 69,700 66,700
Fareham 114,500 58,700 55,800
Gosport 81,900 41,800 40,100
Hart 99,400 50,300 49,100
Havant 124,200 64,200 60,000
New Forest 175,800 91,200 84,500

"In the 2001 census Portsmouth and Southampton were recorded as being parts of separate urban areas however by the time of the 2011 census they had merged to become the sixth largest built-up area in England with a population of 855,569"
The figure you're quoting as being Southampton's urban area also includes Portsmouth. The total urban population of Southampton in 2001 was 304,000 so either it's trebled in 20 years or they've included Portsmouth since 2011, which seems more likely?
This map: https://www.citypopulation.de/en/uk/cities/englandua/ shows the urban area, it includes Portsmouth
Re: Terrible terrible Birmingham
Cardiff apparently is around 400,000 as a city , in 2022
Population change in certain areas may reflect how the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic affected people's choice of usual residence on Census Day, for example, students in Cardiffs case and in other urban areas of the city itself people were not at home.

No the Pompey Southampton urban area is 1.6 million .......South Hampshire
Of that 1.6 million , about 900k ....a lot bigger than Cardiffs urban area ........make up Southamptons urban area
The city of Southampton, like Newcastle, Nottingham isn't that big ...but it's urban area is bigger than Cardiff ......same as Newcastle urban area and Nottingham urban area

Well the town centre where you go to primark might be but not the wider urban area

Even if it was bigger than Cardiff (urban area ) which I’d argue it isn’t the area you are talking about has a significantly higher amount of people aged 60-90 compared to the Cardiff Urban Area,so it could be argued that would impact support.
