About 25 years ago I got down to the final 2 for a job at the BBC. I'm now an underpaid civil servant and they're not.

The last sentence had me scratching my head for a moment, then the penny dropped.
I remember years ago helping my step-father renovate his house. I was mixing the plaster by hand, with no rotary attachment on the end of a drill or anything like that. I was soon stripped to my waist in next to no time, the sweat was pouring off, and my arms and shoulders were aching like hell!
I think getting in the ring would have been an easier option. :hehe:

Thanks for the erudition: I had no idea what a 'spread' was (beyond the comestible and carnal scenarios).

Not a career change but in my younger days I had an opportunity to work for a company in Newport Beach, California but opted against the move over the pond.
