What is needed is a rapid dialing down of the rhetoric and far more open minds and open ears to listen to different opinions without demonising them.
He was apparently a registered Republican. I don't know how well you understand the American electoral system, but in the 2022 election cycle tens of thousands of Democrats re-registered as Republicans so as to "support" the candidates they considered weakest in the Republican primaries. It is universally acknowledged that they had some success with this tactic.
I have personal experience with this sleaziness. About 15 years ago I was surprised to learn that a very lefty co-worker was a registered Republican. He said he did it to interfere with the Republican primaries.
Tellingly, this would-be assassin made a $15 contribution to Act Blue, which is the major fundraising arm of the left.
I think his "Republican" identity is pretty threadbare.

Jim, you use the nuanced, balanced, fair mantra as a way of belittling other people and their views, it's your way of saying that people who don't agree with you are insignificant, but you just can't say that (Although sometimes you slip up) You use thee tactics even when someone is bang to rights, instead of saying what you really think.

But yes, ill clarify: If you think political violence, a presidential candidate being shot and a member of the public being killed is funny, then I don't think your views are insignificant, I think they are damned right dangerous.
