Presumably, besides the stick and carrot he promulgated (being born sinners and going to hell nless you believe in him) the bloody peasants went off and believed in other gods, different versions of the Abrahamic gods or simply not at all - and many Christians decided to become what my lay preacher friend describes as "pick and mix" i.e. they consider stories such as Genesis as not being literal.
If truthpaste's god exists, he's quite a spectacular failure.
