I saw Fleetwood Mac, around 87. Their support band 'The Adventures' stole the show, they were fab.

Black Sabbath fronted by Ian Gillan at Reading oh dear me ??

Re: BANDS WHO DISAPPOINTED YOU LIVE
Of the big heavy rock bands at the beginning of the 70's, for me it was Led Zep that I enjoyed least, probably due to Robert Plant's posing on stage. Much preferred Deep Purple and Sabbath but both these bands were blown out of the water when I saw Jethro Tull and Wishbone Ash at the Capitol. Even now they are in my top 5 gigs of all time.

On The other hand, was given tickets to watch Depeche Mode in Barcelona when living there in 2011. Never was a fan but went anyway. They played to a packed house of 20k and were really good.
Saw Elvis Costello 3 times live in '77, '78 and '79. Bored the pants off me each time. I only went along coz my mates at the time were into him. Best moment was when Dave Edmunds joined him for the encore of 'Mystery Dance' in '79 at Sophia gardens Pavilion
Could never figure out why Hawkwind played the 'Monsters of Money' aka 'Monsters of Rock' at Donington in '82 (I think it was). They were the total opposite of the spectrum to the commercial rock bands playing the event, and in those days were the kings of the free festival scene.

No I was saying that just because music is, as you call it, "meaningless," that doesn't mean that it isn't good music.
Freddie Mercury isn't the entirety of Queen, as you know. Their music is probably just as popular as any music is worldwide and will probably still be popular in two hundred years time, like Mozart and Beethoven are now. They have catchy tunes and decent playing, easy-to-remember lyrics and beautiful harmonies.
I expect that you will disagree with my views but, then again, you are VERY opinionated.

Re: BANDS WHO DISAPPOINTED YOU LIVE
James earlier this summer in Toronto. They were touring with The Psychedelic Furs who put them to shame.
I’m all for bands playing new stuff but mix it in with the stuff people come to see you for.... James have some excellent early stuff but the only song the majority of the 2000 crowd knew was ‘Laid’ and Tim Booth even announced before they played it that it was a spur of the moment thing to even play that. Everyone in the crowd was pissed off that Sit Down didn’t get played.

Re: BANDS WHO DISAPPOINTED YOU LIVE
Must say I've never wanted a band that disappointed me to die, so quite an extreme topic title.

The gig was early '77, when they were touring the Burnin' Sky album. Not a good album at all by their pretty high standards. I've seen Bad Company a few times and always found them excellent. How come you found them boring?

Before that gig, someone warned him about this but he was adamant it would work, saying you never can tell.

I was at both of those!
I thought that the Stones were good (although I was only 18 at the time - it was a lovely sunny day and the J Geils Band were the support)

Ooh.
I saw The Clash 3 times and along with The Smiths, The Jam and early Springsteen, they were without doubt one the the best live bands I’ve seen :-/

Prefab Sprout at Cardiff University.
Beautiful records (Steve McQueen) that somehow didn’t translate to a live performance. Not the night that I saw them anyway.

That is how he operated though.
I saw him in Clapham and it was the same. Shambolic but entertaining at the same time.

I think it is generally recognised that tour was bad. I was in Berlin a couple of weeks ago and we did a Bowie/Iggy tour. Our guide was a Bowie fanatic but even he admitted the Glass Spider tour was poor.

I agree on the first 3 but I can also understand why someone who saw The Clash in 1977 might not have had the greatest musical experience, particularly if their preference was for heavier rock. I didn’t see Springsteen until late 80’s.... sadly

Yes, it is well known. He signed a contract to play for X minutes and that is how long he played for with no encores.
I saw him in 1982 and that's how it was

Re: BANDS WHO DISAPPOINTED YOU LIVE
The whole Millennium concert as the Manics, Super Furry Animals, Feeder and Shack tried desperately to get everyone in the party spirit and then fu**ed off at 5 minutes to midnight and came back on at 10 minutes past with Hey Jude playing over the speakers for 15 minutes.

Jethro Tull were astonishing good live act ( Anderson has such a different unique presence than most singers ) saw War Child tour , slept outside the Capital for me ticket

Re: BANDS WHO DISAPPOINTED YOU LIVE
Indeed, Ian Anderson was highly entertaining (and extremely intelligent). Anybody seeing images of him in the late 60's/early 70's would have been convinced that he was the most drugged up performer around but it is on record that he took absolutely nothing. A fantastic speaking voice too if you've ever seen his interviews. Sadly, I saw Tull about 3-4 it years ago and he could barely hold a note. Still a great flute player and excellent acoustic guitarist though.

Re: BANDS WHO DISAPPOINTED YOU LIVE
I do festivals regularly so see a huge amount of dross. But of the bands I was looking forward to, the worst by a mile has to be Depeche Mode. Just two hours of not knowing where one song ended and another began - zero audience interaction - zero enthusiasm. Stay off the smack kids.
Honourable mention to Evan Dando (Glasto '95) booed offstage and arrested shortly afterwards for having enough drugs on him to fell a horse.
-
Re: BANDS WHO DISAPPOINTED YOU LIVE
I forgot to mention old Slowhand. Saw him at the Albert Hall in the late 90's and he had zero persona on stage. To be fair he never considered himself a front man and you can understand why. Excellent player though he is, he never interacted with the audience. I could have saved myself a few bob, stayed at home and just put his records on.

Agree about The Clash. Brilliant live but maybe not for their musical prowess.

Although I could never say I didn't like Bowie, I did sometimes wonder what all of the fuss was about. I went along solely because it meant I could say that I had seen him live. Sounds like it was my bad luck that the only time I did that was on the tour which is recognised as being, possibly, his worst.
Maybe because my expectation levels weren't great beforehand, that concert just kind of washed over me and I cannot say I was that disappointed by it. It's probably a sign of the lack of impact the whole night had on me that I cannot remember for sure if Peter Frampton was there as well or whether Cardiff was one of the shows he missed on that tour?
