I don't think any of us know what is going on but I know for sure if I had the profile of peston and someone put me in a situation where I had to make an embarrassing climbdown by feeding me bullshit I would a) name them and b) never listen to a word they or their pals say ever again.

That may be true but you can't tell me that the majority of those who responded to those twitter accounts are exactly unbiased observers!!!

I don't see what the response to mistaken tweets has got to do with it. The issue here is that two journalists, who are in very influential positions, were either lazy, incompetent or biased when fed incorrect information by sources they will not reveal.

But it's here regardless, and journalists have the responsibility to behave like journalists. Theres no one else to blame. They are responsible for what they put out, whether it's on 'problematic' social media, a newspaper, a sandwich board, anything.

I don't understand what you're getting at - I didn't post Peston's tweet because of the responses to it, I posted it because he admitted he posted something in error and, yes, when a journalist puts a story out that is based on something which is shown to be not true, then they should give serious thought to revealing a source.
