I don't do heartfelt posts about celebrities/footballers passing etc, can often find them a little tasteless, people following the crowd etc. I'll be honest though the original reports about Whitts, shocked and sadened me to the point of tears on Tuesday. The news this afternoon whilst inevitable, is devastating.
I saw every second of every minute of every game this absolute wizard ever played for us. I really was his biggest fan. The amount of times I got into blazing rows with people telling them that I knew the stats and Whitts covered more ground than anyone else and intercepted more than anyone by his positioning. Told people they were idiots just because they couldnt see it as he never ran around like a headless chicken. I had no idea how true any of this ever was, but I was robust in my defence 😂.
I think the angriest I've ever been after a football match wasn't a play-off defeat or wasnt after a sh*t refereeing decision. No, it was Warnock hooking him off in what we all knew was going to be Whittingham's last home game. I was absolutely seething and it took me a long while to just accept it was part of football. I called Warnock everything that night 🙈.
The guy was a gentleman and just adored by all. He was also the most understated footballer youve ever probably come across, completely refusing the attention that came with the job! He even refused a testimonial to celebrate his near 11 year service to the club. I guess that's whats so upsetting about the stuff that was posted too early by people earlier this week. This guy avoided the limelight; and you can be sure he wouldve wanted his family to be afforded the same. Love and thoughts to them.
Peter Whittingham - Mr Cardiff City. Rest in peace 💙
This REALLY hurts. I’ve been watching since 1972. No one even comes close to him. I have 4 kids - he was and remains the only player they’ve ever ‘loved’.
He loved South Wales .... I wish he’d never left us
Awful news, always seemed such a lovely guy and as a player, undoubtedly one of the best to have turned out for us.
RIP Peter, thank you for giving me and my father some terrific memories.
My condolences to his family and friends.
I really can't think of another player who on so many occasions made it feel great being a City fan.
The greatest bluebird I ever saw. I wanted you back at the club to help younger players learn from your unbelievable talent. That will now never be. But we will love you forever.
Thank you for the years of magic and the unforgettable goals, including the best goal I ever saw with my own eyes.
You're a bloody Legend Whitts. Possibly the best midfielder in the history of the Championship. I will never forget what you did for us.
Terrible for Peter and his family and hard to believe. There are many football fans around the country who will be saddened to hear of this. It will hit Cardiff fans the most as he was a legend at your club. It says something that he stayed in South Wales at the end of his career.
R.I.P. Whitts, a true cardiff City legend. One of the best players I have seen, in my 52 years of watching us play, to wear ever wear the shirt.
Sincere condolences at this very sad time to his family and friends
You tend to think if someone is in hospital they'll fix it. Obviously they can't always. So very sad.
Gutted about this was hoping for a happy ending for all concerned
Awful news.
RIP Whitts.
So, so sad. RIP Peter.
Our thought are with Peter's family and friends at this very sad time.
Stunned. I was hoping he would pull through. Heaven's eleven have another team mate. Too young. RIP Whitts. That free kick v Leicester. Special, just special.
R.I.P. Peter.
Tragic news.
I can tell people that I had the privilege to watch you play.
RIP LEGEND.
Devastated... RIP Peter.
Truly awful if not unexpected news. Our finest player of the last 50 years who gave us so many of those wonderful moments that are the reason we want to watch football matches in the first place. Thoughts very much with his family. RIP Whitts.
R.I.P to a City legend, such a talent. Heartfelt wishes to Family and Friends #7.
Gutted. RIP Whitts. Gave me my best memories in football, and I think he will always be my favourite player. So sad for his family. 35 is no age.
i know it might sound odd but i still cant believe he is 35 i kinda looked up to him sort of thing... like as if he was older, i dont know if that makes sense and i suppose it does not need too...
just sad... had so many expectations on him during match days, and jumped and leaped for joy when he scored, and as we all know he barely ever broke a smile or celebrated, i liked that sort of confident silent aggression about him
looking back i really would have like to have known him for a chat other than just a player i admired from the stand...
minds wandering now its like a bad dream all this... crazy
rip sir peter
tragic..rip
Speechless....RIP Whitt’s you legend. Gutted
RIP Whitts
thanks for 10 years of pleasure
Rest In Peace City Legend x
RIP Whitts
#RetireSeven
I remember being at a home game when Malky was in charge. We had a free kick a few metres outside the opposition penalty area and Whitts was stood over the ball. The Canton Stand was singing the "He does what he wants" song.
"Why are they singing that?" I heard someone sat near me ask. They must not have seen him play before.
Whitts struck the ball perfectly into the top corner of the goal. The keeper had no chance.
"That's why," came the reply just as the ball hit the back of the net. Of course, Whitts didn't celebrate.
We were so lucky to have him.
Welling up watching his goals here. Absolutely gutted.
That’s so weird, maybe we stood close to each other because I can remember exactly that scenario!
Realistically he was always better than us, we were incredibly lucky to have him. Villa made a huge mistake letting him go, he would have been just as impressive in the EPL!
A provider of memories all of us will remember forever. He will go down in City folklore.
RIP Whitts.
Just gutted,RIP all my thoughts are for his family and friends.
Just so sad. Saw that he was dead, and then he wasn't and then there was hope. And then he was.
Not really a consolation for your family, but you were the most naturally gifted player I saw at the City. Thanks for all the good times.
Horrible news.
Tribute from Ramsey quoted online :
“I will forever be grateful for you taking me under your wing. You were one of the most technical and gifted players I’ve played with and that left foot of yours was like a wand. I’m proud to have played alongside you and will always remember the young vs old games and you just running the show. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family, rest in peace Whitts was too young.”
