We pronounce every single Portuguese name incorrectly, also.
There are a lot of Portuguese around here too. I've noticed many people tend to pronounce Portuguese names as if they are Spanish, which as you say, is completely wrong. I know a guy called Marco Nunes (pronounced noonis) most people pronounce it noon-yez.

You're dead right, the es is more of a shh than the Spanish yez/ez.
