The Red Wall nonsense grates me but Wales could always attract the attendances when doing well. You're pissing in the wind with your recollections.
Welsh people/fans being shouted down in pubs for cheering when England concede a goal. Where does this happen? Hay on Wye?
Leeds have got a rivalry with Man United. Their fans detest each other.
Rivalry is a two way thing isn't it? It's hardly a rivalry if one of the so called rivals is at best apathetic about the other.
yes , of course Wales fans are as fickle as city's, the Welsh are very fickle
Lots of examples of crap crowds at Welsh international games
Even the WRU struggle to sell tickets when the international team are having a rough patch
Leeds are hated by Bradford City and the feeling is mutual . The fact they rarely play each other doesn't come into it .

Re: Non-football oval-shaped thread
England is the biggest country along with France has the most players, most money etc they should always win so the Celtic nations always support each other in wanting to beat them against the odds! It was the same in Football when we had the Home Nations which England would usually win and in the end together with Scotland decided Wales and Ireland weren’t good enough to compete with them on a regular basis?

So you're right, that isn't rivalry but I don't know what the heel it is. :hehe:
Describing us and England as having a "rivalry" in football is a bit embarrassing because they couldn't care less about us. During Euro 2016 a lot of my English friends were genuinely surprised at how much we wanted them to lose when they were rooting for us to do well.

I have heard that Germany feel the same way and consider their rivalry with the Dutch. Is it really a rivalry if one team is so much more successful than the other?
On the other hand, people in England generally know so little about relationship with Wales (Scotland/Northern Ireland/Ireland) whereas we know a bit more about it, although not always seeing as our media is still mostly from an English perspective and apathy or self-negativity is too often a national trait. How many know for example that time our anthem was banned at Wembley?
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wal...t-12351782.amp
Do things like that mean we have a different view on it whereas lots of them didn't know we existed before 2016? Still, Southgate used the Welsh corner routine in Russian World Cup and credited spending time scouting rugby and basketball without mentioning us and English pundits always quick to point out English born Welsh players whereas they don't do similar for their stars so maybe there is something coming back from that side? Them not wanting us to win isn't the only way it can manifest itself.
Let's be honest though I) the English FA's job is to make England successful and they're quite alright pretending Wales (or a anyone else) doesn't exist if that improves their odds and that can include overriding any thoughts of any potential rivalry and ii) sports rivalry is slowly changing so now more about us winning more trophies rather than having an empty fixture against a neighbour which is a cup final in emotion only. That might change again in a political climate where some Welsh/non-Welsh who don't want Wales to exist in any real way and those who want it be more confident and defined and these smaller things might become more important.

Indeed he does
The Manics ? Nicky Wire , Spurs , Drummer , Liverpool .......whilst they hang Welsh flags over their amps
Bryn Terfyl .......Manchester United
But as long as we beat the English......

Re: Non-football oval-shaped thread
it's similar in Ireland, where many people will support a big premier League side rather than a local team, but be very passionate about the national team.

Well we have four clubs competing in the English pyramid and although taking cardiff and Swansea as examples there are a greater number of people who identify in the South as being followers of us two then yes it would be similar .
I dare say if Dublin and Cork had teams in the English pyramid you would get a hard core of support for them but plenty of Liverpool and Man United hangers on
I bet there are plenty of shamrock rovers fans who get pissed off with clowns wearing man United shirts

I’m not sure I’d put this Leeds/Bradford thing up there with Sunderland/Newcastle, Blackburn/Burnley or a Sheffield derby.
I’ll say this and it’s only an observation, Leeds supporters I’ve met over my 50 years are not even arsed with Bradford. They’re local Leeds lads too. They spend the majority of their time rabid about other clubs.

I might have this wrong but I thought the sporting rivalry between the two cities was more relevant between the rugby league clubs?
I can remember seeing a set-to between Leeds and Bradford on Westgate Street once on a rugby league weekend. Both groups looked giving as good as they got. Big lumps too.
The football rivalry is non existent according to my Leeds mate. Bit of a local thing, nothing else.

Pathetic. Beating someone up for wearing a football shirt. Grow up, Sludge.

As you know theres a decent percentage of Bradfordians' who support Leeds.
This partizan image youre trying to create of Bradford being a no go city for Leeds supporters and every inhabitant foaming at the mouth and rabid against Leeds is a figment of your imagination.

^^^^ This, there is a healthy rivalry in rugby league between Leeds, Castleford, Wakefield and when they were in super league Bradford Bulls, the Leeds/Cas rivalry is particularly intense atm but the one thing most of the above fans have in common is that a good percentage of them support Leeds United

People in Leeds, Castleford and Wakefield may well support Leeds but in Bradford they are very proud of their football club and can't stand Leeds
Before lockdown they were getting 16000 crowds
Very partisan

Thats not correct , Bradford have very big crowds for a city that has such a very poor football team
They are very proud of their city , its culture and their football team
Leeds is known as the car park on the M62 by Bradfordians

Are you saying this doesn't happen ?
What do you think would happen if someone walked around Swansea in a Cardiff top ?
Abuse at the very least
Its clearly not right and its laughable to suggest I would get a thrill out of it , but it happens
Do you think Sunderland fans go out at night in Newcastle with their mackem shirts on and dont get a hard time ?
You must be very wet behind the ears 👂

Hmmmmm.... Population of Bradford approximately 550,000 (?)
Crowds not great historically, so this rivalry thing with Leeds is falling flat on its arse.
Interestingly, they don’t appear to have had capacity crowds for every game when in the Premier League? I’ll stand corrected if I got that wrong.
The improvement in attendances the last few seasons has been down to great club initiatives to involve the local community.

Re: Non-football oval-shaped thread
One more thing, there’s a Leeds United Supporters Club in Bradford which is over 50 years old. These Leeds fans are hardly hiding are they as they run their meeting in local clubs around the area.

Well I have lived and worked there
Have you ?
I lived on the East Side of Bradford , bordering Leeds, I can assure you they didn't go out for drinks together
You say there is no rivalry , but you haven't lived there ?
Its pointless conversing with you if you just know a few Leeds fans
I lived in Bradford and I know there is
