HT 2-1
Has Ward made a save yet?
Not very confident for the 2nd half without Allen and chasing the game. That goal gets better everytime I see it though.
I don't tend to go in for criticising good teams but Christ something about the way Belgium play always bores me to death. Clearly a great group of players but it took them 15mins to work out which way the goal was. I'm sure they'll have a great passing accuracy stat though by the end of the game so who needs excitement!
No keeper is stopping the first one. He was given too much time but still, unstoppable from De Bruyne. The 2nd is annoying with the slip but they've been all over us since our goal, so I'm happy we go into the break just one down.
even if we lose this we've done ok. this should be our hardest game by some distance
Czechs 6-1 up in Estonia, Estonia 108th in the World Rankings though (is that correct?)
We'll probably lose 4-1 but at the moment the draw feels like it's on :)
That is terrible from Mepham
Mepham really is dreadful. Shocking defending. Game over.
Mepham feckin clown, that's not football ffs.
sadly we don't have enough talented players and get found out. we'd been looking better 2nd half as well but that's killed it.
Mertens did throw himself in to the leg of Mepham just to make sure
Shame really, Wales really gave Belgium a game in the second half and the penalty has curbed their momentum.
Mepham is so prone to switching off, Ward makes the crucial stop and Mepham opts to check where the ball is heading to rather than try to cut out the path of the ball. Sees that it's heading for a Belgian, it's too late to do anything meaningful and he panics and just lashes out. Park football stuff.
Bale off, Keiffer on!
Corner!..... foul by KM :frown:
Loss is a loss but doesn’t feel like the hiding it could have been. Ward hasn’t had to do much but has fished it out the net three times. Belgium have had to work for it and we’ve passed and kept possession well (when possible), especially in the second half.
That’s as positive a loss as we can hope for I think. Looking forward to the game against the Czechs.
Ah well pretty much as expected.
Thought we did pretty well and were very brave in our approach in the second half - 3-1 was probably about right on the balance of play.
Keep in mind that there are things we did well which helped us qualify previously:
- Together Stronger
- One game at a time
Not really any need for hyperbole in criticism.
There was some really good stuff tonight (not that it counts but our goal was the best on display) but an uphill battle from moment our defender slipped in the box to give Hazard an easy header. Not long before Courtois had almost passed it back to us meters from goal and not too long after it was De Bruyne slipping just miles away from danger - luck going against you three times like that when playing FIFA ranked best side in the world makes it a very hard game. Some in camp words needed about defensive lapses in goals conceded, but we created a few dangerous moments with good pressing from James and Wilson in particular and Rodon looks like a beast at CB.
Chris Gunter's ton on Saturday, with chance for some youth/fringe development, then another important game next Tuesday.
Decent performance considering the absentees. Need stuff to go your way when you play a side as good as Belgium and that didn't happen tonight. I can't help but feel we backed off too much after taking the lead though
Wonderful goal, turns out Wilson's a decent player when you keep the ball on the floor
Kept S4C on and they’re showing a doc on Dai Davies (rip), great footage of a packed Ninian Park in a couple of games against England.
Bale seems to have escaped criticism. A couple of decent moments but anonymous most of the time. It annoys me that he sulks when he loses the ball and then doesn’t track back.
The pitch was shocking for an international match. No doubt they are a class side but Wales were the better side in the second half, with some better decision making a draw was a real possibility up until the pelanty.
Considering how highly ranked Belgium are, I thought they were toothless. Yes they deserved to win but they had to rely on a Conor Roberts slip and a daft penalty to win the game. With a full team out I see no reason why we can't turn the tables on them at home. Oh, and Brazil would have been proud to have scored a goal like ours. A thing of beauty
Yes it was a lovely goal. Roberts slip was very costly.
I seem to be the only one who thought mepham was a little unlucky. admittedly I haven't seen it properly since the game, but I thought he was reaching for the ball and the Belgium player just ran straight through his leg and fell over.
surely he's entitled to go for it, and if the player hadn't smashed through the back of him he'd have cleared it. could have been given as a foul the other way elsewhere in the pitch.
I do appreciate I'm probably alone in this though.
their first goal we had an opportunity to clear just before, I think by Roberts and we didn't take it, and then the second was just plain bad luck.
the best team won, but we have them a good game.
I thought it was Roberts as well, but, according to Wales Online, it was Mepham and they used that as a reason for giving him just four out of ten. I thought he was naive with the penalty - he’s going through an awkward time in his career and I feel he’s good enough to come out the other side of it.
Turkey and Switzerland both with good wins in their opening 2022 campaigns - especially Turkey's 4-2 against Netherlands.
Will be a tough group in the Euros.
