I'm surprised they didn't claim that was offside as well

If thats the case that the player challenging the keeper is an offside position then the decision is correct.

I think if all the Ecuador players and the officials were on the take theyd still beat Qatar.
Not impressed with their Ultras either

Re: QATAR v ECUADOR. Match thread. 20th Nov - 4pm
The Qataris don’t look happy now. What odds on Infantino being found lifeless in bed tomorrow wearing only a ginger wig as this isn’t going according to plan clearly. The very contentious disallowed goal after 4 minutes didn’t do the tournament any favours at all did it? Perhaps at half time or full time we will have an explanation but it’s going to be a subtlety at best.

Re: QATAR v ECUADOR. Match thread. 20th Nov - 4pm
Qatar look shit and this is their easiest game.
The Dutch squad must be scrolling through Wikipedia to see how many records they can break next week.

There's a lack of female qataris amongst their supporters. Spotted a few but only amongst the more corporate looking areas

Who is the Dutchs main striker. Got think they will put 7 or 8 on these. Maybe worth a punt for the Golden Boot.

should be 0-3......how on earth can the early goal be rules offside? That is not what football is all about.
I hope second half Equador go on to score 5 or 6..

Re: QATAR v ECUADOR. Match thread. 20th Nov - 4pm
Looking at the replay I cant see how that is offside.

Someone at BBC HQ need to get on the phone and let the studio gang know about their impartiality rules.
They’re not exactly keeping quiet about their thoughts on the VAR decision.

It wasn't, unless the rules in Qatar state there must be 4 players between the 'player' and the goal line !!!

Surprised how many Equador fans there are....apparently it's a bit over-cool in the stadium with the under seat air con....

Re: QATAR v ECUADOR. Match thread. 20th Nov - 4pm
Ecuador's first goal was offside despite my misgivings at the time. Qatar are extremely poor and will almost certainly lose every game.

Re: QATAR v ECUADOR. Match thread. 20th Nov - 4pm
Dion Dublin jizzing all over Qatar and praising them is laughably embarrassing.
-
Re: QATAR v ECUADOR. Match thread. 20th Nov - 4pm
Has Dion Dublin be chosen because he is genial and presents a TV show? It can’t be for his analysis surely. I’m not a football scholar and do like listening to wisdom but good grief this has been painful. admittedly he could explain how the hyperextension may have felt but anyone who’s played any football already knows that even if it was only as a youngster. I’m no fan of the BBC at all these days, but can they not find anybody with an opinion of note?

Loads of empty seats already those in the corporate seats probably gone for a beer

Looks like our stylish and innovative ayatollah seats have inspired the stadium designers.

Re: QATAR v ECUADOR. Match thread. 20th Nov - 4pm
Am I missing something.? They keep showing the "offside" but the clip is when the challenge is made with the keeper. He wasnt offside when the ball was played?

Was very generous of the Qataris to vacate their seats early so us international fans could admire their fancy stadiums before it gets demolished.

They showed the freeze frame showing the knee of the Ecuador player was clearly offside.

Yeh, but they seemed to stop the freeze-frame when the ball landed on his head not when the FK was taken.

Yes but that freeze frame wasnt when the ball was played. He ran into that position and was yards onside.
-
Re: QATAR v ECUADOR. Match thread. 20th Nov - 4pm
Apparently the offside was the player receiving the knockdown not for the initial header. Can’t be arsed checking.

DD was chosen because of his upcoming series "football stadia under the hammer"

Qatar v Ecuador
Did anyone watch the game?
I missed it but just saw the highlights on BBC iPlayer and can't work out why Ecuador had a goal ruled out for offside. VAR on the replay shows the striker as offside when he plays the ball, not when the ball was played to him.
Anyone know what happened?

Re: FT: QATAR 0 - 2 ECUADOR. Match thread
Shit - sorry I didn't even notice a match thread.
-
Re: FT: QATAR 0 - 2 ECUADOR. Match thread
Yeah I still don’t understand why he was offside the day after. His knee was offside, but after the “knock down” (which was really a goalie coming out and smashing his team mate) and he didn’t touch the ball or get involved in the play. I’m not even sure the ball went forward after the “knock down”.
Everybody who touched the ball in that move was well onside when the ball was played. Proper dodgy unless we now say that anyone within a couple of yards of the ball who has a knee offside will be called in this tournament.
-
Re: FT: QATAR 0 - 2 ECUADOR. Match thread
There's got to be more information regarding VAR decisions that we saw yesterday because it's going to become a bigger and bigger issue as the tournament goes on if decisions are made on the sort of sketchy info shown to people in the ground or watching the game - the so called justification of the decision yesterday showed nothing to prove conclusively that it wasn't a goal. I'd do away with VAR myself, but while what we get in the Premier League is frustrating because it takes so long and the humans using the technology sometimes interpret it wrongly, at least we get the full picture - yesterday was like a cheap, early version of something which was not fully ready for use yet.
-
Re: FT: QATAR 0 - 2 ECUADOR. Match thread
Totally agreed Bob… seems what we got yesterday was the technology without any context, even if it was offside by the rules of the game (which I’ve seen no evidence of) that’s never been offside in any game I’ve ever watched up until last night. That is the inevitable end game to the “must get it right at all costs” direction that some seem to want us to get to.
Many sports having this issue tbf, the NHL is becoming a joke with coaches taking minutes to watch and challenge offside which then take 5-10 minutes to review as well. The game that seems to do it best is still Rugby, as it’s an open communication and it’s still down to the interpretation of the referee on the field.
