We need people who will defend from the front, Wickham certainly didn't do that for Forest Green.
Forest Green have thrown money around in this latest transfer window, I doubt that money would have been an issue if they wanted Wickham to stay until the end of the season. Purely a guess but I would have thought that they didn't want him to stay on and it doesn't seem he's had loads of offers from other clubs.
Saying that if he signed and scored a few goals I'd be more than happy!
Who says Wickham over Robinson? If signed, he'd be backup to Kaba.
Forest Green may have thrown money around, but if Wickham had already been speaking to other sides higher up the ladder, who knows?
As Blue Matt said, they wanted to keep him, he walked way from an extension.

Pay as you play contracts are mainly an urban myth - popularised by keyboard managers on message boards.
Where they do exist (e.g. Andy Carroll at Newcastle and Reading) there is always a low basic wage as well.
The EFL has not yet adopted the zero hours 'gig' economy that has leached into other parts.

Snipers? Not many use that word but i know another who likes to use it hhmmmm:hehe:

Cardiff City are deciding whether to offer free agent striker Connor Wickham a contract with the club, WalesOnline has learned.
Wickham, 29, left League One side Forest Green Rovers last month after his short-term deal came to an end. The striker had interest from a number of teams last summer and even had a trial at Reading before joining the Gloucestershire-based side.
Wickham was keen to get games under his belt after years of being ravaged by injury hell. In his 20 games in all competitions for Forest Green this term, he scored nine goals. Now he is understood to be looking for a new challenge.
It is understood first-team coach Dean Whitehead helped to bring the former Premier League striker into the building before Sabri Lamouchi was appointed Bluebirds manager.
The player underwent rehabilitation with the Cardiff physios with a view to training with the Bluebirds, however that now appears unlikely as the club would be liable for any potential injuries caused should he suffer any while training with the team.
The centre-forward's injury record is clearly a concern for Cardiff, with a short-term contract likely to be the only way this deal gets over the line. He has played more than 20 league games in a single season only once since the 2013/14 campaign.
However, it all hinges on Lamouchi's assessment of the player. Cardiff are desperate for extra firepower in the squad and managed to bring in only one striker on deadline day in the form of Midtjylland front-man Sory Kaba.
Whether the Frenchman feels he has enough goals in the squad with Kaba, Callum Robinson, Kion Etete, Mark Harris and Isaak Davies as his forward options remains to be seen.
Wickham has 69 career goals to his name, during spells with big clubs including Leeds United, Sunderland, Ipswich Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Crystal Palace, which would put him behind only Robinson in the list of goals scored in the current Bluebirds setup.
But while Lamouchi has not ruled out the possibility of bringing in more players on free transfers, he did allude to the lack of match fitness as being a potential issue.
Wickham's last game for Forest Green was almost two months ago, a 1-0 win over Cheltenham Town in League One. Given he was rehabilitating an injury when he arrived at Cardiff, too, how much longer until he would be realistically match fit? That could prove the ultimate stumbling block.
If he's on low wages and can score a few to gain us some points then it's worth a risk..

I made a comparison between him and Robinson based on statistics, goals scored v games played this season.
I was just making the point, that having watched Wickham a few times this season that I don't think he's what we need and I question whether he'd put the effort in to defend from the front.

I don't get that last sentence.
He's a centre-forward. Since when did they defend from anywhere?

The modern style of playing out from the back, would you not want your strikers to be hungry to chase the ball down, force the opposition defenders into making mistakes so you win the ball higher up the pitch?

No, in all honesty.
I honestly think that's part of the problem with this so-called " modern game".
Strikers are strikers. Do I expect them to chase things down and run? Of course...
Defending though, no.
Strikers need to be sharp enough and ready enough to break. If they're chasing everything all night, they're crackered and not much use.
F*ck the "modern game", there are many teams that try and play this shite and fail miserably.
I want strikers in the final third, not back at the half-way line.

Re: Connor Wickham - possible short-term deal?
This would have been a good deal five years ago but now? I’m not sure.

I agree about this modern game lark. The amount of teams who try and play from the back and fail is laughable. Keeper tapping it to the left back who then piss's around with the centre half only for the ball to end up back with the keeper who then hoofs it up the pitch. Utter Nonsense :hehe:

Re: Connor Wickham - possible short-term deal?
On the salary mentioned (2-4k a week) for the rest of the season it seems like a fair enough gamble, similar player to Robinson in some ways I gather rather than a target man to provide another option to Kaba but we are absolutely desperate for anyone who has previously scored at this level. Still not sure what some fans want on a free after the window has closed. If he scores 3 goals while he's here he's already on a better strike rate than our other options.

Physio's probably a bit quieter now, so he can give them some more work.
Hopefully i'm wrong and he saves the season!

Re: Connor Wickham - possible short-term deal?
Just seen this from 5th Nov (the same day we last won a match). Probably the reason why Tan's happy to offer him a contract https://mobile.twitter.com/HLTCO/sta...20472506630145
