G7 leaders strike deal on $50bn funding for Ukraine using Russian assets
G7 leaders have reached a deal to use profits from frozen Russian assets to provide around $50bn (£39bn) worth of support to Ukraine.
It came after Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said he expected “important decisions” from the summit in Italy, with leaders from the UK, US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan seeking to shore up support for Kyiv as several of them face elections or political turmoil at home.
Also on Thursday, US President Joe Biden agreed to a sweeping bilateral security agreement that will see his country and Ukraine work together “to help deter and confront future aggression against the territorial integrity” of either state.

I know it goes against the grain but wouldn’t it just be easier for the world if Ukraine just agrees never to join NATO AS LONG AS Russia pulls back and never invades again? If they do then Ukraine becomes a NATO state and everyone gets involved which should be enough to keep the evil at bay. Obviously there will always be issues in the contested areas, but just look at how many lives have been lost and ruined already….
It has been another bad week for Vladimir Putin.
He started his war in Ukraine to limit Western expansion, he says. It is accelerating apace entirely because of his aggression.
In direct response to his unprovoked invasion, Ukraine has this week been able to sign a 10-year security pact with America - a bridge to its eventual membership of NATO, even if that is still a very, very long way away.
And Putin has been powerless to stop the West taking $300bn in frozen Russian assets and using the interest to wire $50bn for aid to Ukraine.
That has got to sting.
EU accession talks for Ukraine will also begin before the end of the month.

People look too much into this. I agree the world is unstable, but when in the last 100 years was it not? When in the last 500 years was it not?
World war one, stock market crash, rise of fascism, world war 2, iron curtain, spread of communism, threat of nuclear apocalypse, Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, end of communism in Europe, rise of China, climate issues, endless wars in the middle east, Israel and Palestine, Russia and Ukraine...
The threat of chaos is the norm isnt it? Seems the 1990s was perhaps a bit of a sweet spot and the rebirth of many democracies in Eastern Europe etc, but we didn't know how that would pan out and in itself only set up what we have seen in Georgia and now Ukraine.
I know it sounds depressing, but I do think "the end is nigh" crowd sometimes wear rose tinted specs
Date setters come and go, with the Watchtower taking pole position in that regard. The 'wars and rumours of wars' have been a feature for a couple of thousands years and more. That is a marker but only part of the equation. For those know who the end players are set to be and how the key nation is positioned in that end-game scenario; they have a far clearer picture of how close we are.
Having watched and studied both since the late 1970's, the key nations have moved on rapidly towards where they are finally meant to be.
It would need to be in a sentence before it could ever become hyperbole. I can understand why any speculation re WW3 would be unsettling many people, but rest assured, it will probably start and end before anyone gets the chance to begin a new thread.

China are also fitting into place - GLOBAL NEWS (11th July 2024) reported:
"China accused NATO on Thursday of seeking security at the expense of others and told the alliance not to bring the same “chaos” to Asia, a reflection of its determination to oppose strengthening ties between NATO members and Asian nations such as Japan, South Korea and the Philippines.
The statement by a Foreign Ministry spokesperson came a day after NATO labeled China a “decisive enabler” of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
“NATO hyping up China’s responsibility on the Ukraine issue is unreasonable and has sinister motives,” spokesperson Lin Jian said at a daily briefing. He maintained that China has a fair and objective stance on the Ukraine issue.
China has broken with the United States and its European allies over the war in Ukraine, refusing to condemn Russia’s invasion or even to refer to it as an act of aggression in deference to Moscow."
This thread is a toozy if you want a laugh about great predictions and abject cowardice

Unfortunately, the numerous Chinese government officials I had meetings with at work didn't mention it.
As they were such close allies they must have been peeved that all the gifts they presented us with (including ties) had to be taken away immediately after the meetings to be examined for mini-microphones etc.
I've said you're a moron who pops up in every thread, says something vague and cryptic and then whenever a world event with potentially negative consequences happens you try your best to be smug and claim I told you so whilst everybody else rolls their eyes and laughs at you.
Hope that clears things up.
It is a bit of a mixed bag, as this end of year comment (below) outlines.
EU-China Relations factsheet - 07.12.2023
The EU sees China as a partner for cooperation, an economic competitor and a systemic rival. However, EU-China relations have become increasingly complex due to a growing number of irritants. China has become less open to the world and more repressive at home, while taking a more assertive posture abroad, resorting to economic coercion, boycotts of European goods, and export controls on critical raw materials.
The main take-away from recent Chinese/ USA, Russia/ Ukraine, Pakistan/ Iran, Israel/ Iran, Israel/ Lebanon and the instability of other nations like North Korea with Nuclear capabilities in the hands of the lessor and greater nations, is a fact that the world is a far more dangerous place than it ever was, even in the days of the cold war.
