Bob, Could you imagine what some of the return games following these hammering would have been like when they were played on successive weeks?

Thanks Paul. Unfortunately, it’s prostate cancer. It was initially detected during a series of blood tests and scans for an unrelated and so far undiagnosed condition I’ve been struggling with since August. The guidance from the staff at the hospital has been excellent from day one, so the biopsy results weren't a great shock when they arrived a couple of weeks ago, but they weren’t exactly the best way to start 2025 either.

While Saturday’s result won’t define the season, it shouldn’t be regarded as in any way insignificant either. After all, the facts are that it was Cardiff City’s heaviest defeat since May 1966 and Leeds United’s biggest victory since March 1972. Considering some of the dreadful sides City have fielded during the intervening years and some of the powerful teams Leeds have had at their disposal during that time, the magnitude of this defeat shouldn’t be underestimated.
Hopefully, the manager, his staff and his players are ashamed of what happened at Elland Road and will do everything within their powers to ensure nothing similar happens again. This squad has a soft underbelly that has been exposed on several occasions this season. Saturday’s woeful performance should be a reality check for everyone involved, and also for any fans who were beginning to believe the current side is better than it actually is.

Cheers Steve. Thankfully, I'm not considered to be in any immediate danger. The consultant has determined that, at this stage, the risks associated with surgery or radiotherapy to eradicate the cancer are greater than the threat posed by the cancer itself, so I've now entered a period of what is described as active surveillance (regular blood tests and scans, etc). It's a bit scary, but in reality it's not too bad as things stand, and the staff at the hospital have been brilliant.

When I had my prostate scare eleven years ago. I got to hear of several men in a similar situation to yours, some had been in that active surveillance phase for ten years and more - I got to talk with someone at a City game at one stage who’d been going back and forth to hospital for checks for over twenty years.
Given what you’ve been through, I’m sure you will have heard the line that plenty of men will die with prostate cancer, but not of it - their cancers develop so slowly that they live well into old age and something else is responsible for their death. The other good thing is that you’re in the system now and so if there is any deterioration in your condition, it will be detected early.
All the best Dave, sounds like you can get back to something like normality now.

It is so important for men to have regular PSA blood tests that check the prostate. I was talking to a health official recently who contrasted the amount of money spent on breast cancer in women and the little on prostate cancer in men.
To all blokes who post on this site if you haven't had a PSA blood test go to your doctor's surgery NOW and book in for one. It's also important to have them regularly.
Best wishes for the future, Dave. Keep looking up.

Thanks Paul, much appreciated. Everything you've said about the prostate cancer issue ties in with the advice I've been given and I know a couple of people in similar situations, so I'm reasonably relaxed about it. And as I said, the hospital staff have been brilliant.
As for getting back to normality, I wish... I originally went to the GP in late-August with severe shoulder pain which quickly spread to the arms and wrists. We're now almost six months down the line and I've had 12 sets of blood tests, two sets of x-rays, a CT scan, and MRI scan, a colonoscopy and a biopsy. Prostate cancer has been detected, but the medical teams are still none the wiser as regards the cause of the shoulder pain or the varying levels of inflammation and other anomalies that are showing up in my blood (yet more blood tests are scheduled for Monday morning). Thankfully, the pain is now greatly reduced by comparison to how it was back in September and October, but the shoulders and wrists are still nowhere near right.
It's been quite a journey. I must be the only guy in South Wales who has gone to his doctor with shoulder pain and ended up with a prostate biopsy and a camera up his butt.
:hehe:

I hope your recovery continues.I went to the doctors recently thinking I had prostrate problems. All clear but bloods showed signs of liver disease. My doctor said it's surprising how many illnesses are found out by chance.
Re: Defeats by five or more goals
Our NHS is such a precious thing, it must be protected vigorously.

All the best to you TLG, hopefully this remains dormant and you get back to full health

I totally agree. Funnily enough I used that phrase "soft underbelly" on Saturday night and couldn't help but think of another phrase once used on here (think it was by TOBW to one of Dave Jones's sides) - "flat track bullies".
More importantly, I can only echo the comments by others and wish you the best of health and hope everything turns out ok.
Re: Defeats by five or more goals
Many thanks for the well-wishes.
Back to the matter in hand - I was looking at the Championship table following last night's results and noticed that Leeds United's goal difference (+41) is now eight more than the total number of goals City have scored this season (33). I know Leeds are a decent side by this division's standards, but that's ridiculous.

It’s four more than second placed Burnley have scored isn’t it?

It is. It's a crazy goal difference for this stage of the season.

There have only been 15 occasions where there has been a higher goal difference by the end of a second tier season with 24 teams in it. If it continues to grow at the same rate it has all season, it'll be at +64 by the end and only Reading in 2005/06 will have had a higher GD in the division in its current form, which was +67. There were previously 4 goal differences at this level even higher than that, but all were from 1920 and earlier, when they were goal averages. In 1895/96 Liverpool won the second division having scored 106, conceded 32 and having a goal difference of +74. That was even more remarkable as there were only 16 teams in the division that season....
