Fashions change, in those days the women in the office all wore high heels and stockings to work….:-):-)
I threw a bunch of ties out a few weeks ago. I ditched my whole wardobe basically as all my clothes were too big. As for ties I just kept a black one, two maybe three patterned ones and this

It is used in the areas of Gloucester, Bristol and Somerset too.

It’s a bit sad that ‘trainers’ has become the generic term. It was always daps around here and around the country there were other words like pumps, sand shoes etc. I think it’s great that areas have their own words for things and we should strongly stick to tradition rather than all fall into a boring line.

I first came across the word 'pumps' during my Merchant Navy training days. A scouser used the word 'pumps' and I immediately corrected him and said... "You mean daps, don't you?"
I honestly thought 'daps' was the universal word for them. :hehe:
BTW: What is the official word... plimsolls?

I understand that. But still, why? Before you have something, you have to get it. I'll never fully understand why people are so bothered about what language other people use. What a waste of time and energy.

No you don't.
Not in a coffee shop.
Someone else (who works there) gets it for you.
I think some of us get 'bothered' by misuse of language because it can be lazy, nonsensical or perverse.
When it doesn't have to be!
Now, on to double negatives..... :hehe:

My Mum used it yrs ago to describe JJ Williams the Welsh rugby union player.
I’d never heard it before, or since. She told me it was a Cardiff saying, but to this day I think she just made it up 😂
Yep my mum used it as well as ‘shit off a hot shovel ‘ to describe something fast

Double negatives used to be used in Old English.
Jagger should have sung that he can get satisfaction though.

The waste of time and energy is unfortunately ours trying to fathom out what people mean when they speak such nonsense. The only way ‘get’ can be used in this circumstance is ‘can you get (whatever) for me’, ‘can I get’ means you are asking if you can go behind the counter, reach up on the shelf and get it. The server should say, ‘Yep, it’s over there, go and get it’
Re: White daps with a suit?
Can I change the subject and ask, apart from weddings, funerals etc. when was the last time you wore a suit? Must be about fifty years in my case.

I wore a lilac suit to my brother's wedding when I was 18 but I don't like to talk about it.
P.S. I haven't worn one for decades otherwise - although I sometimes wore a jacket that looked like it matched my trousers in numerous meetings with officials from other countries. Ties presented to us as presents by Chinese government officials were taken from us a soon as we left the room - to be checked for micro-microphones!
Re: White daps with a suit?
Mad seeing those old photos of Barry island day trips, all the dads in jackets & ties and the mams in long frocks sat on deck chairs enjoying the blazing sun:hehe:

Appalling English in the first example, it should be 'can you get one of those'. TBF, a proper education isn't cheap and the selection process does weed out the riffraff. I digress :hehe:
