I read in the comments section from one of his videos that Sinead O'Connor was the choice for the tour but she had to cancel
and Paula got the gig, if you have a nice tight set of cans to listen to this, Levin's bass is sublime

recently announced will be releasing an album on SIRE records soon too .
He’s just wonderful. As is Johnny Marr.
They both perform Smiths songs really well but it’s so sad.
It’s been against the zeitgeist to like him for a good while, but when you look back at his career there has only been a short while when it wasn’t and there were very dedicated fans, many wearing a quiff :)
I watched a video recently about his hardcore Mexican fan base…and it seems as though it’s more a case of Mexican Americans in East Los Angeles, Chicano lowriders as well as proper bangers.
Apparently his vulnerability resonates along with a sense of machismo.
I think that they realize that he got filled in in Newport and survived :)
Here’s another for you, and I F’king hate cover versions…particularly of songs and bands that I love, but this definitely gets a pass from me!!

he didn't exactly get filled in but I know what you mean . some well known city faces at the time were in the thick of it all that night ! I remember it like yesterday and still got photos from that gig
here's an article in the WOL which mentions that night from 2013 on the release of his book

to this day the most fearless and bravest song writer to ever come out of the UK and yes that cover version of chain gang does it justice
if i was given a pound to the amount of people who would have liked to see the smiths live i would be a millionaire now !
saw them 3 times in total have spoken to many smiths pod cats and fanzines over the years from the UK and afar because of that Newport gig which made national attention back then . Looking back the whole situation could have been alot worse a sort of Hillsborough situation . The initial rush after he came off stage i ended up on the floor with people on top of me . Nursed a few bruises and aches and pains for a few days after
for nostalgic sake

Not yet night time but with the cluster fu** going on over there presently, a very apt tune for the time,
prefer this to the original although Forbes was involved in the original, brilliant video.

I saw this tour in November 1977. After Dave Hill, Blackmore was my guitar hero back then, with Cozy Powell on drums and R J Dio on Vocals a very powerful unit.
