Re: Assorted Football Quiz Questions 10
Well done everybody who had a go at the questions. Here are the answers........
1. He died comparatively young in 2006 and shares a name with a very collectable make of motorcycle - which City player is it ?
John Vincent signed for the the City from Middlesbrough in 1972 although I always associate him with being a Birmingham City player. A good player as I remember, I met him once at a quiz in Canton Cons and he was a really nice bloke. He shares a name with the make of motorcycle Vincent. A Vincent Black Shadow from the 1950s can go for for eye watering prices. He died at the age of 59
2. There is something he doesn’t have in common with a Basenji - which City player ?
I was trying to find another way of asking a question about our one game one goal wonder Billy Woof so, considering his name, I decided to use the theme of dogs. The Basenji is famous as a breed of dog that doesn’t bark hence Billy Woof not having something in common with it. However, the evert alert Cyril Evans Awaydays spotted that this question could also apply to Chris Barker so - nice one Cyril !
3. John Bond paid the City £20k for him but didn’t rate him, he was signed by a former City player who was sacked and his successor didn’t play him, his career was resurrected by a successful spell at The Poppies and he eventually was named in a PFA Team of the Year - who is he ?
We picked up Billy Kellock as a youngster from the Aston Villa youth system and he played in our 1971 FA Youth Cup Final defeat to Arsenal. He was transferred to Norwich, then in the 1st Division but, after relegation in his first season he was bought by ex-Bluebird Benny Fenton, manager of Millwall. Fenton was sacked and new manager Gordon Jago didn’t incorporate him into his plans so he left the Lions without playing for them. He then signed for The Poppies - Kettering Town - under Derek Dougan where he flourished for 3 seasons eventually signing for Peterborough where he played over 150 games and went on to have a decent footballing career.
4. Which City player has a name that sounds like a skin condition in animals ?
Ken DeMange - a midfield player signed on loan from Hull in 1990/91 - nothing memorable at all about him in terms of performance other than his name.
5. 3 goals in 15 games during his time at the City was not much of a return for this injury prone England U23 striker - who is it ?
Made his name in Division 1 with Sheffield Wednesday and then moved up in the world to Liverpool. Injury and John Toshack limited his appearances to 15 games but scoring 7 goals including a hat-trick. Frank O’Failure invited him for a trial and he spent a season with us then one season with Reading before finishing league football. Nowadays he is a well known musician in the Sheffield area.
6. Prior to Rambo who was the last former Cardiff City player to score in an FA Cup Final ?
Eddie Newton scored in the 1997 Chelsea final win over Middlesbrough. In 1991/92 he played 21 times scoring 4 goals. On 24 January 1992 some posters on here may not have seen his score the winner in a 3-2 home win against Mansfield because of the fog.
7. Aluminium, Lanthanum, Nitrogen ?
The Periodic Table - Al for Aluminium, La for Lanthanum and N for Nitrogen spells Allan. Sandy Allan only played 11 games for the City between 1967 and 1970 scoring only one league goal but a hat-trick in the ECWC. In the 1969/70 ECWC 1st round we were drawn against Mjøndalen IF and demolished the 7-1 in the away leg, relaxing somewhat in the return leg at Ninian Park we only managed to beat them 5-1 with a Sandy Allan hat trick. Wiki says he became the first player to score a headed hat trick in a European competition. A proud record if true
8. He has played for all 3 South Wales clubs has scored in the ECWC and the UEFA Cups and now works for the FA - who is he ?
Jimmy Gilligan played for Newport on loan as well as us and Swansea. He scored for Watford in the UEFA cup and was our other hat trick hero in 1988 against Derry City. In January 2020 he accepted a role with the FA leaving his post as Nottingham Forest U23 coach which was taken over by that well known porker Andy Reid.
9. Name the 2 Cardiff City players who have won more than 100 International Caps.
The very forgettable Fan Zhiyi, 106 caps for China and opinion divider Gary Medel, 126 caps for Chile and still going strong. Cyril Evans Awaydays, who must have been on quiz performance enhancing drugs last night, quite rightly put me in my place by saying that Jess Fishlock had won over 100 caps - that’s me told !
10. What connects Mickey Rooney to our former stadium ?
I was browsing through Wiki page for Zsa Zsa Gabor to see if I could link the name of one of her many husbands to the name of a Cardiff City player ( I couldn’t but found a link to Patrick Van Anholt) so decided to look at the Wiki page of 8 times married Mickey Rooney and stumbled across the fact that his real name was Ninnian Joesph Yule Jnr - not quite the same spelling but I couldn’t resist it.
11. Engirdle a lorry
An anagram of Gerry Nardiello. His quite good return of 4 goals from 7 games at the end of the 1985/86 season was not enough to save us from relegation. There has been a bit of a dynasty of Nardiellos with brother Donato and nephew Danny playing for Wales.
12. He was assistant to someone who I saw score, he managed the Gingerbread Men and a team that was wound up - which former City player is it ?
Jimmy Mullen has been around the block a few times at various levels as a manager. 13 managerial spells in 27 years not including being assistant to Ronnie Moore at Rotherham. Amongst his managerial appointments were to the Gingerbread Men - Market Drayton Town and the doomed Telford United who were wound up in 2004.
13. To my knowledge he is the only player we have signed from a Scottish team that contains the name of a character played on film by Liam Neeson - who is he ?
In 1995 Liam Neeson played the title role in the film Rob Roy. In 1969 we signed Jim Eadie, later to be known as “The Flying Pig” from Kirkintilloch Rob Roy. I can’t think of anyone else we’ve signed from them but stand to be corrected.
14. He was promoted twice and relegated 3 times with and shares a name with a character in “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” - who is he ?
Mike Ford definitely had a “Snakes and Ladders” 2 spell career with us. He left us for Oxford in 1988 and rejoined us from them 10 years later. No relation, however, to Ford Prefect of “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy”
15. The first year PFA Teams of the Year were announced one of the teams contained a Future City player, a past City player and future City manager - name all three.
1973/4 was the first season in which PFA teams of the year were announced and in that season the Division 3 team contained future City player Colin Sullivan, then of Plymouth Argyle, past City player Alan Warboys then the “Smash” half of the “Smash and Grab” partnership with Bruce Bannister at Bristol Rovers and finally future City manager Alan Durban then of Shrewsbury Town.
