I was a lot younger then.
The Spurs game was wonderful. My first ever game at the City, and my dad took me to the rugby international in the afternoon too. We beat Ireland 3 - 0.
That game at Ninian Park saw us beat the Spurs team that did the double for the first time ever. They had a class side, Jones, White, Blanchflower, McKay to name but a few. We beat them and at the end of the season they were Div 1 champions and we got relegated lol.
There were over 45,000 people in the ground that night. So from this thread we've identified 4 of them, all we have to do now is find all the others!!!

Well I'm glad the football was good because the rugby doesn't sounds like it was a classic :hehe:

Re: What are our favourite Cardiff City games???
Starting in the seventies, the 1-1 draw with Palace to stay up seemed massive. Adrian Alston's debut against Chesterfield on a Friday night when we won 4-3 I think, and then that beaut of a day when we beat Spurs in the FA Cup.
In the 80's nothing compares for me with the 0-0 draw at Pompey when the clock tower disappeared! What a fantastic day that was.
in the 90s the best game I never saw was the one in the fog against Mansfield when we won 3-2 apparently!
Leeds in the FA Cup was the best atmosphere I've ever encountered. Deciding on a whim to drive up to Oldham to see us play and we thrashed them 7-1. My only away game that season.
QPR at the Mill Stad was just too much. And switching to Wembley Ben Turner's equaliser is the most I've ever celebrated a goal ever.
I'm sure like most I could easily add another 10 games without thinking too hard about it.

Re: What are our favourite Cardiff City games???
God I used to love football back in the day its so bloody sanitised now , so PC , becoming politicised , no atmosphere ,no bad boy players , cant have a pint watching the game, so many rules in the game and getting to a game , think were policed heaver now that in the old non stewarding days .
I still go but my god its getting harder to enjoy the event .

Low scoring rugby games were the norm back then, have a look at this breakdown of the 1961 Five Nations Championship.

The following year, Wales drew 0-0 at Twickenham on their way to scoring nine points in their four matches!

That Chesterfield match was played on a Friday - it was Halloween.

Yes, that one sprung to my mind - made even sweeter because I was staying over and working in our Bristol office the next day.

If we are including Wales games - Ian Rush's winner against Germany takes some beating. What a game that was.

It was Three points for a try then (there was a time before I was born when a drop goal was worth four points) and you could kick direct to touch. It was a little before I started watching rugby, but I believe there was a game at Murrayfield where the Welsh scrum half Clive Rowlands continuously kicked to touch and, with Wales dominant in the line outs, much of the game consisted of going up and down one side of the pitch contesting line outs - Wales won 6-0 I believe it was and I think the game may have told the authorities that a rule change was urgently needed.
Wales would have been struggling if there were minus points for moustaches in Melvyn Davies’ day.

True but when you're 10 years old with your dad and its your first live sporting event, and an international at that, its still something you remember for ever.

Re: What are our favourite Cardiff City games???
Maybe an age thing but I'm astounded nobody so far as mentioned a certain game against Spanish minnows Real Madrid.
Have so many favourite games but in the late 60's when a Toshack/Clark spearhead was putting so many teams to the sword, especially at Ninian was a joy to behold. City 4 Palace 2 around Easter time in front of 30,000 fans was rather special

Yep - I was at both of those.....! The Spurs and the Aston Villa games that is...not the rugby...

I can remember Merv the Swerve, struggling with Mel the Smell though:hehe:

Re: What are our favourite Cardiff City games???
Some great memories in this thread. One other match stands out for me as well as ones I’ve mentioned but not for the game. It was the thrill of seeing an ‘old’ man playing, 47 year old Stan Matthews. 1-1 draw against Stoke in 1962, I watched it from the front of the Bob Bank and had a close up view of him hugging the touchline. Can still picture it vividly.

Villa game also a great game, Graham Moore scoring the only goal.
Just dug this one out of a box of Dewi Lewis's (aka Citizen aka my uncle) old progs. Interesting he gets his own ad for the Western Mail.
That Spurs side was indeed something else, but what an amazing win for The City. I was just a baby so it wasn't there :frown:

It was your post that got me digging around Dewi's archives because I'm pretty sure the Stoke prog is around somewhere but I haven't found it yet. I used to read them over and over when I was growing up (in fact, I think old CCFC progs was all I remember reading as a nipper) and I remember seeing the name Mathews and making the connection for the first time.
I'll keep rummaging.

Splot P. I might well have been standing next to you for that Matthews game. Don't remember a lot about the game except for Stan being on the ball and debating which way he was going to beat our full-back, Can you remember who was marking him that day?

Re: What are our favourite Cardiff City games???
For me, the Real Madrid game, with Brian Clark’s header. Winning at Fulham, 2-1 with Jordan Mutch scoring the winner in front of us. Also, winning at Brentford when we were down to 10 men? and Alex Revell scored the winner ? Wales v Scotland, where Jock Stein sadly lost his life. We were opposite on the Bob bank and could see something going on, but only when we got to the pub after, did we know what had happened.

That’s a tough one, you’d automatically think Peter Rodrigues or Alec Milne but nagging me in the back of my head is that it was Trevor Edwards. Could be well off the mark though.

How random is the Gilesports ad, Suppliers to Juventus, The Nigerian FA, Cardiff City & Newport County. Can’t imagine Gigi Peronace getting off a trolley outside Wyndham Arcade, nipping into Gilesports on the corner of Caroline St to negotiate a kit deal::hehe:
