If somebody told you not to put your hand in the fire and you did it, who's fault would it be?

So it seems Coutts did lie?
Worrying stuff really. And who sets the rules?

Question to everyone really - if you had your bank account shutdown - and you then establish that it is because of your political view points on this message board - would you be ok with that ?.
Wasnt happy in the 1980's when my Dad was effectively stopped from getting a promotion because of his somewhat 'firebrand' approach' to union life
Those who were considered a threat to the conservatives over the years wether they be trade unionists, miners support groups , academics, actors were treated like shit and often had far worse done to them than not get promotion or have their bank accounts closed
The Economic League were a group of right wing captains of industry , bank managers , government advisors who kept a record of people they thought a danger ...even gay rights activists ! .....to conservative policies
What happened to farage is a grain of sand in the desert compared to so many others who were not right wing
The book is called The Economic League ....The Silent McCarthyism
Named after the anti communist ......or anyone who wasn't a right wing republican .....witch hunts in the USA
Nothing whatsoever (again) to do with right & left. The guy is an absolute idiot and his ideology is extremely dubious but the bank are hypocritical.
How many of their account holders are oligarchs, CCP members etc ?
https://twitter.com/addicted2newz/st...LhmySD2aRt-GNg
No but its a mere drop in the ocean to hear of right wing politicians and those in society getting stiffed like the socialists or those thought to be have been
The Economic League was basically the gestapo and stasi of the tory party for many years till it got rumbled
Put it this way losing your bank account was the least of your worries if that lot had you under surveillance
It's very much to do with right or left as the left have been stiffed by right wing surveillance groups for years
The Economic League were paid by the Conservative Party and big business to disrupt those that didn't agree with
Old farage got off very lightly
Some lefties are still missing !
So if a right wing bank (if there is such a thing) blocked your account, then blocked anyone of a left wing leaning opinion that had posted in a football forum - you would take it on the chin ? - I thought you had more bollox than that.
Maybe a review by the FSA into account holders at Coutts needs to be looked at..
Whether it's Farage or Michael Foot matters not.
And for once I agree with you - plenty of unionist firebrands in the 70's and 80's had a mark against their name - some officially - others not - but where their employer knew what they were like and decided to never give them promotion regardless of skill level.
Snowflake?! I don't think having your bank account shut without warning is like sitting on a university course and coming across a historic word you don't like.
Surely anyone liberal recognises this is fundementally wrong?
It also interestingly highlights who the core audience for many 'woke' views are, and it seems to be the giant banks, fearful one assumes of a reaction by a tiny minority on social media?
I don’t know about firebrands’ but thousands of trades unionists, socialists and communists were prevented from working at all - not just blocked for promotion. The Economic League ran an employment blacklist - as I know to my cost.
And ‘left’ and ‘right’ is absolutely relevant. Those who claim political views are irrelevant or that there is no left or right any more are the new foot soldiers of the alt right. They have their own devious and dishonest agenda. The political left are and always will be the enemies of wealth and privilege and exploitation. The right are the apologists of wealth and privilege. It is easy!
I have tried to tell you that this sort of sly stuff has been going on for years by the political facade YOU prop up against people you label as lefties ......strangely enough not much mention
It's only when one of your lot gets stiffed......farage ... that suddenly nigel farage is a poster boy for the downtrodden
I suppose we have to be grateful it's in the news
I would absolutely oppose this happening to anyone based on this criteria. I am no fan of banks at all and will argue against things like a cashless society and excessive surveillance at every turn. Can you cite a recent example to back up your claim?
And even if you are right, and perhaps you are, you tolerating this only makes it more likely to happen to anyone in the future.
What claim ? That The Economic League is a right wing group with sinister actions ?
That's not a claim, that's a fact
I don't tolerate this sort of activity please don't insult my intelligence
I have said that twice now
This is still going on now and there are so many examples they have written plenty of books about it
What we do know is that it is OVERWHELMINGLY people left of the political spectrum and those involved in human rights , trade unions , the environment etc that have been targeted by the forces of money and control
I am not going to waste my time enlightening you about the activity of The Economic League
Thatcher was a big fan
It's certainly not funded by the TUC put it that way
Quite a funny read all this. Shines a light on the people who are so politically blinded that they can't even comment on a simple topic without filtering it through their political beliefs first.
I take from that, that you can't name an example.
I also don't think it's true about history either btw. Perhaps more so in this country, esp when one thinks of union blacklisting and things, but not generally. Nonetheless, such actions were wrong then and they are wrong now, especially with us all seemingly voluntarily giving banks and financial services firms so much power.
Although I do take the point about banks closing accounts for someone's political beliefs, I'm guilty as charged when it comes to Farage. At the time of the 2016 vote, I was a genuine don't know and the main thing which, just about, tipped me into the remain camp was the fact that I just couldn't put myself on the same side as him.
Not quite sure why that is relevant. Whether someone is right - left - nationalist - communist should make no difference.
Coutts has prime ministers, presidents, politicians , judges, generals, journalists, entrepreneurs etc - some which I am sure I will like or indifferent or dislike.
If banks want to discriminate on the grounds the individual is a politically exposed person - then in theory Coutts would have very few customers left.
The good thing to come out of this is that the law will now be changed. Radio4 this morning had various people on giving their opinions - they invited both Nat West and Coutts to come on and discuss their 'policy' - but the interviews were declined.
They have exposed themselves and their industry of their policies - and these will now be changed.
Yes - although I imagine most of them prefer to buy property in London via a shell Swiss investment company they have setup.
Coutts have opened their own can of worms here - and it's a very murky can, especially when compared to an ex metal trades investor and who had the temerity to start his own political party (like we all could have done).
Same as Bank of Dave up in Burney - that program is well worth a watch
Farage gets an apology from banking boss
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-66258137.
Rightly so. Some will have warmed their hands at Farage being embroiled in this scandal but banks interfering with free speech is chilling and no one would win from it
Grovelling apology issued to Farage, by Natwest lady who is paid 5 million squid where the bank is approx. 40% owned by the tax payer , maybe its a reminder to these companies that they should concentrate on running their businesses and stop worrying about and or promoting the culture wars. Farage won a broadcasting award the other week which was won on a people's vote, he might not be likeable to many but IMO this particular win might open up a little can of worms, IMO he's just another gate keeper with the pretence of being on the side of Joe public.
Natwest CEO resigns.
Lucky not to be prosecuted for a major Data breach
