I went into work Monday and there was a big picture of the incident in the Western Mail.
What made it worse was a few rows in front was a father shielding his young son.
The caption to the photo was.. "Why I Don't Take My Children To Football Matches Anymore".
This was March 1984. The game ended 3-3. Quite a day.
I was also up in the corner of the Grandstand and was in that Western Mail picture on the Monday. Were you among the group of us who were escorted by the police out of the Grandstand, down the players' tunnel, around the pitch past the Canton and into the Bob Bank?
Chelsea were all over the ground that day - Grandstand, enclosure, Canton Stand, etc. I got slapped a couple of times when the fighting broke out, but got off relatively lightly if the truth be told. My mate Vaughan was about six stone dripping wet and was thrown around like a rag doll. What I remember most clearly was how frightened I was when the Chelsea mob began clambering over the seats and coming towards us. I'm pretty sure they were chanting 'War! War! War!' Scary stuff.
Relax though, Bobby. I didn't get arrested.

But what were you doing in that area eh? Looking for trouble:hehe: I’ve seen a few photos of that day on ***** site, of you lot being escorted around the pitch in front of the canton, you in it? Apparently that was Chelsea main crew in the grandstand so you got off lightly….

4th photo down is a classic, Chelsea (looking twitchy) coming around to try and get in the Bob bank, a sea of bluebirds just staring at them, like something out of the wanderers movie…..

Can't see me in any of those photos. I had a bleached flat-top haircut at the time, as did one of the mates I was with, so we were quite distinctive. I remember the Chelsea fans in the Canton Stand pelting us with coins as we passed them. That was a weird experience - a group of maybe fifty or sixty of us being led around the pitch to the Bob Bank by just a couple of coppers. Could have gone badly wrong, but I suspect most of us just wanted to get into the safety of the Bob Bank as quickly as possible by that stage (I know I did).
We were held for a few minutes in the players' tunnel before being led around the pitch. During that time, my little mate Vaughan got punched by a Chelsea fan leaning over from the enclosure. He had a hell of a day....

Classic game that, football was certainly less boring in those days.

Brussels in 91 we had a big battle with Wrexham then we all ended up on the ferry together on the way home ….. interesting that was

Re: Who on here has been nicked watching Cardiff?
There were small groups of Chelsea fans on the bob bank that day but no way were they going to turn it over
Even some Victor Meldrew old gimmers with walking sticks were getting stuck in

That’s the one I was on about, a street full got scooped up the night before the game I think, or was it the pm of the game I can’t recall. Remember bumping into Wrexham in the square, the few jacks about didn’t venture there until we had all gone, as ever….
My main memory of that was chasing off the group of North African locals who were picking off Welsh fans walking back to their hotels, in the end a group of around 20 nutters went down another street and eventually came up behind them, much to their surprise, think they got a right leathering but at least we could all get back nice and safe….see Bobby, sometimes it pays off….

Cool story. You should be on the Central Club podcast with stories like that.

Re: Who on here has been nicked watching Cardiff?
Has anyone got access to that post made by a Man U fan, who recalled his “day out” in Cardiff when we played them in that infamous friendly at NP in the late 70’s.
He was only about 15/16, and he and his mate had bunked off school in Manchester for the day to travel to Cardiff. His account of the whole day and the violence that ensued, was both very scary and very very funny,

Thing is Henry, the thread has obviously got your attention, as not only have you clicked on to it, but you’ve read through it and contributed to it yourself. Cool 👍

I was merely intrigued by who would be giving it Billy Big Bollocks on here and you didn’t disappoint.

So was I around in those days but I don’t feel the need at nearly 50 years old to still be bragging about fights I had when I was a teenager / young adult. The podcasts are totally cringe.

No, I wasn't. I stood my ground and neither the police nor the Chelsea fans could budge me!
... but in reality, I don't recall what happened after the police broke up the fighting :hehe:. I know for sure I wasn't in your group that got escorted around the pitch.

Dont think anyone’s given it Billy Big Bollocks.
In fact, most of us have mentioned how scary it was and how daft it was to get involved.
You know this though, and as usual, you’re just acting like a grade a dick. Not cool.

Yeah if you like tales of men old enough to be granddads still talking about fights they had in their teenage years. If that stuff still impresses you then you crack on.

I was a Friday night regular at Rumney Juniors throughout the Summer, we used to roll launch ramps and other wooden knock-ups down there and go crazy :hehe:
me, C Fowler, P Fowler, Stu, Malc, Elliot, Pritch, Evo sometimes, a few others..
if it was raining outside we had the go-ahead from the caretaker to use the annex, great times.
Chris had use of his folks Volvo estate and we would all pile in and go to Cleppa Park on the way to Newport, all rails and stuff, or a low-key abandoned warehouse mini-ramp in Aberdare that we knew about, some of the best times I had were with those lads, I was only talking to him on Facebook yesterday, we went to Morfa Stadium in '89 for the Powell Peralta UK tour, met Tony Hawk etc., I tagged him in an article about that day and he shared a bunch of photos in the comments, he was only one of two people documenting those days, Denny was the other, he was a BMX'er from Cathays.

Denny, he was the video guy right? He must have some right insane footage from those days…Mental parties with them lot all dressed as trannies arguing with neighbours in witla court. Don’t see much of that lot now, apart from Daf who was one of cardiffs original skaters , also used to work in city surf for years and lived with me down the bay…early 90’s.

that's the guy, he's got so much footage that in his words "i'll never get around to digitising it all..", thousands and thousands of hours.
I was at some of those parties, and the ones in Roath (Oakfield Street student house) absolute carnage! :hehe:
I know Daf Fortt, chill bloke, he was original City Surf crew, he'd remember me.

I just find so called hardmen in their 50s and 60s still bragging or arguing about scraps and who done who 30-40 years ago total cringe. See a lot of it on Facebook. Cardiff / Swansea / Newport hooligans / ex hooligans still arguing about what happened in rows when they were teenagers / young adults. Even worse some of these people are still involved. Grow up ffs. They wouldnt live two seconds with proper hard men like John Smith.
And FTR the John Actie podcast one was decent. The podcast has gone downhill since his early days and especially since he got An-arse involved.
