Re: ASTON VILLA v CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Always going to be a tough ask this. Such a massive gulf in class, budgets, etc. good experience for the young players in the team.
-
Re: ASTON VILLA v CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Could end up 3 or 4 now, but after tonight’s over all performance, the whole squad should take positives and realise they definately have enough to stave off relegation.

Terrific game for the neutrals this.

Ah well.
We didn’t embarrass ourselves and there were some positives.

Difficult on really, if we had come out to play then it could have been 5 or 6, as it stands, we didn't create anything of note but kept the score down. Villa looked like they knew that we couldn't hurt them, and we couldn't. Well done to the young kid on the left of defence, stuck at it.

Re: ASTON VILLA v CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Not a bad performance. We showed them a little too much respect though. Colwill was our best player. Horvath made some top saves. Young lads did well from the start. Positives!
-
Re: ASTON VILLA v CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Was absolutely a penalty on ng in first half. Even keane and Wright said it was.
We'd have lost anyway but still......
-
Re: ASTON VILLA v CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Better than expected IMO.

Re: ASTON VILLA v CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
It was one of those games that if you do a high press it leaves gaps at the back.
It was a cup game just go for it we might have had a chance.
Well done the City.:ayatollah:

What?!!!
Did you actually SEE Villa vs Liverpool or Newcastle vs Liverpool? Games with both teams attacking each other - they were very entertaining for anyone watching.
I don’t think that one neutral would have enjoyed nearly 90 mins of attack against defence tonight. People want to see a contest and be entertained…..

Joking aside as cardiff fans and knowing where we are in the league, knowing how badly we've been beaten by teams in our own league recently, knowing the injuries, knowing the games coming up- we can't be annoyed at that.
Shame it did feel was just a case of getting the game out the way more than anything but we move on

I think they’d have enjoyed it, it’s a cup game, and the underdog made it a game for 67 minutes.
Colwill’s best game for us, he was outstanding. I don’t know why Riza didn’t bring Ashford and Davies on earlier. Thought Giles was a bit sloppy in possession but on the whole, he did well and Lawlor should be proud of himself too. Lot of positives.

Would have liked to have seen davies and Ashford on for el ghazi and willock at 1 0.

Stone wall pelanty Father, no question about it. Very well played down by the production team, a replay wasn't even shown during the game, it was only after the break at half time that they showed it.
Lee Dixon, the latest in a long line of English support commentators to "toe the line" gave us no credit from the off, except the patronising stuff when he knew the game was won.
Okay we weren't very adventurous but what did they expect from a struggling championship team, 4-2-4
Anyhow eck em, bigger fish to fry and good experience for some kids.
I think Riza got it just about right.

Or even when it was still 0-0. In fairness Willock worked hard first half but El Ghazi didn’t do much in his “cup final”.
Seen quite a few “neutral” quotes on the bbc and other sites saying they couldn’t understand why we didn’t try to win the game and just waited to get beat. It’s a shame we didn’t give it more of a go in attacking terms but I think we could have ended up conceding a lot more if we did

Colwill was brilliant. I'd never considered him in this position before. It could be his future. Ramsey was excellent and showed what an important player he could be between now and the end of the season. Fish was impressive and I really like Salech. The disappointments were Willock and El Ghazi, they have been this moderate all season despite there undoubted ability. It could have been a different story if we had have signed two more effective wide players.

Agreed ... certainly has the ability to keep the ball in tight situations and move past opponents with ease.
He needs to work on the end product. Playing in a better team will help him flourish.

Yep colwill could be a number 8 couldn't he. As in not the holding midfielder (is that a 6?) Or a 10 (his end product isn't good enough) but could be useful to control the ball move it forward then give it on to others who are quicker and have better decision making than him.
-
Re: FT: ASTON VILLA 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
I think one of my favourite moments was seeing 2 villa players on the floor lying next to each other after salech had a tussle with them. We seldom have players who can do that and we have been a very soft squad for years now. Good to see.

How many jerseys can one man wear?

Re: FT: ASTON VILLA 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Relieved that my worst fears weren't realised. A battling performance against a far superior outfit.
Ng is showing the endeavour that made him player of the season for 2 years and was unlucky not to get the pen.
Young Lawlor did himself proud and will be a big player for City in the future.
Colwill again showing his class against top teams. He deserves a transfer to a Prem team to get the best out of him.
Ramsey showing he has an important part to play over the next couple of months.
Horvarth definitely our best goalie, if he can cut out the odd mistake.
Onto Burnley now, with a little more hope than before.

Last time I saw that was when Phil Dwyer did it against Fulham.

Re: FT: ASTON VILLA 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Haven't seen the game as I was out but just read the BBC Sport report. Apparently, Villa struggled to break down our low block.
What on earth does that mean, and are there also middle blocks and high blocks?

Re: FT: ASTON VILLA 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
How did 'playing out from the back' look on TV?
It scared me to death all game as we played it short around the box.

Yes, I was shitting myself waiting for us to make a big mistake. In fairness it never really happened.

Yes , it was scary on TV too Mike, Horvath had a great game but took some big risks with the ball at his feet as sometimes he’s very slow to move it on
-
Re: FT: ASTON VILLA 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
another great performance from Colwill tonight, my only criticism is that he seems to hold on to the ball for a little too long, he goes on these meandering runs and even though there's an option to pass as he tires he continues to plough forward, often losing possession..

Bellamy said Colwill could play there, I think we’ve got 13 games to try him there now. If he plays like that, we won’t be in trouble.
Willock and El Ghazi could struggle to make match day squads now. I actually thought Willock did OK at times today but he’s painfully slow

Re: FT: ASTON VILLA 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
I wonder if we will look to set up as 3-4-3 next season, it does seem to suit quite a few of our players

I’m surprised we didn’t bring on pace at half time, or after an hour. We needed someone to stretch them

Riza wants to play 433, ideally.

Agreed. Manager should have made subs earlier. If either of those had been there instead of Willock when that long ball came over they would have been in on goal.

If there was one criticism from last night it would be this, I really thought at half time we would make those changes?
The positives were Lawlor debut, Giles starting, Horwath looking better than Alnwick, Colwill not looking out of place against a team competing in the Champions League and Salech showing what a good aggressive centre forward can do
That’s not taking anything away from the likes of Fish and Ng etc
I’m glad the manager set us up as he did for the first half, just would have liked to have seen Ashford and Davies on sooner.
With players coming back from injury and playing with the level of commitment we showed last night, we should be looking to climb up the table and get further distance between us and the bottom three

BENT !!! Would they have used VAR if it was a premiere game ??
