Re: EUROS FINAL. ENGLAND v SPAIN
Was flying last night during the game so 1st time I've seen the highlights this morning.
Read the comments here 1st and was expecting some horror decision against the Dutch.
As soon as VAR gets involved that's a pen. He's studs up. Others have said to be fair there be no complaints outside the box.
It's soft but with the rules and VAR it's hardly the horror decision some are making out.

I think if they give each team 2 VAR appeals per game they can use, it would be much better. default to the on field decision and if there's a dubious call the team can request a car review

I agree with this. I think it's just down to anything that the FA, FIFA, UEFA touch turns to sh*t. It should be an amazing piece of technology. See cricket, tennis and rugby. Think about that Chelsea goal when we were in the PL. Everyone was screaming for it then.

I understand what you're saying, but England played their best 45 minutes of the tournament during the first half last night with Kane on the pitch. He was fouled for the penalty and scored it. There's also a reasonable chance that he could end up with the Golden Boot on Sunday.
My feeling was that he played well enough last night overall and the shape of the team was good until the Dutch closed down the midfield, but I felt he should have come off earlier.

You know Kane will now score the winner in the final don't you?! It is written.

There was no clear and obvious error, so it shouldn't have been given.
Typing error surely?
How anywhere else on the pitch and it's a free kick to the Dutch?

If it happened anywhere else on the pitch I suppose it could be considered a late tackle even though it was Kane who actually made the contact. However, in this instance, Kane had had his shot and the ball was out of play.

Re: EUROS FINAL. ENGLAND v SPAIN
I've never been a fan of VAR and would welcome scrapping it
It makes as many errors as without VAR
Its taken the excitement from scoring a goal
I don't see how some games in the FA Cup can use it and some don't, how is that allowed?
Refs hide behind it, and officiating as a whole has got a lot worse

I didn't write that as I was thinking it in my head.
Kane beat Dumfries to the ball by a split second resulting in Dumfries getting kicked.. Dumfries was trying to get the ball and didn't hamper Kane in taking the shot. As for his studs being up, I don't know where else they're supposed to be.
-
Re: EUROS FINAL. ENGLAND v SPAIN
It was a goal that deserved to win any game so in the end I think England deserved it.
This 'anywhere else on the pitch' argument is a load of rubbish though. Its a ball that's dropping a few yards from goal. Am looking forward to the applause when we see City's defenders not challenging to block any shots in the box next season, just in case they touch the striker's foot afterwards.

Why f*ck about with the game in the first place, refs make mistakes, players make more mistakes, that was part of the game. Fans used to spontaneously celebrate goals, that’ll most probably soon gradually phase out. Linesmen used to immediately stick their flag up for an infringement or an offside, now you see it go up 20/30 seconds after, why? Why has the simple game become complicated ?

If they go in with studs up, miss the ball and make contact with the opponent, there’s a good chance they’ll concede a penalty. There are ways and means of blocking shots. Going in with studs up is not the best of them.

In fact, the ball had travelled less than a yard when Dumfries's studs connected with Kane's foot (I've just watched the highlights and paused the frame at the point of contact). This is one of the many reasons I hate VAR - slow motion replays alter our perceptions of what happened in real time, and this is a sport we're talking about, not a computer game.
One thing I know for sure (and I'm not including you in this) - if this incident had happened at the other end of the field, some of those stating it was never a foul would have regarded it as a nailed-on penalty.

England might be in for an unplanned bank holiday on Monday (July 15), judging by previous comments made by Sir Keir Starmer . The newly appointed prime minister, who has only been in power for a week, already has much to celebrate.
Despite being unable to witness Gareth Southgate guide his team to a second consecutive European Championship final, the Labour leader kept tabs on the situation in Dortmund during a NATO meeting. But now, with the Three Lions triumphing over the Netherlands, Starmer could have a significant decision to make.
There have been suggestions that a bank holiday should ensue if England manages to secure only their second major trophy in history. It comes as Southgate aims to surpass his achievement at Euro 2020 , which took place in 2021 when the Three Lions lost to Italy in a penalty shootout

Would Wales and Scotland also have the day off?
(Until I worked in Scotland I didn't realise that they had bank holidays which were not 'celebrated' in England and vice versa. It seemed to be the case that it was a matter of 'swings and roundabouts' but with my immediate bosses being based in Scotland and my overlords being based in England I made the best of both worlds).

Being an employee of the UK government I wouldn't be complaining about an extra day off, but I think I'd rather it not be an option after the final whistle on Sunday.

Re: EUROS FINAL. ENGLAND v SPAIN
Sir Gareth has just about got it right . England were worthy winners last night , awarding the penalty was controversial , the way he buried it was not.
England are in the final , those of us who identify as non English will have to grin and bear it for a few years to come . I actually want them to win to watch the euphoria surrounding it .( And my partners English :hehe:)
England started dreadful and only started performing in fits and starts nearing the end of the tournament
I was thinking this morning , when we got to the cup final against Liverpool , was anyone thinking we didn't play well in the second or third round.

I think most of us would've been surprised to find ourselves going past the second and third round. There was also the sense of just enjoying the ride. Not sure many England fans are of the same mentality.
If they win, what can you do? It's probably about time. Plenty of football fans are swaggering gobshites anyway so that won't make much difference. And some of our dopey fans will have to think of something else to sing at the English next season.
And if they don't win, they'll have an even bigger chance at the next one: home advantage, their best young players hitting their prime, probably an upgrade on Southgate. See, I'm preparing myself already. Jeez, what if they do two in a row?
Ah well, it's only football innit?

Talking about players being in their prime, Yamal will be 20 & Nico Williams 25 in 4 years time, that’s frightening.

Pedri will only be 25 as well, Gavi, who is missing through injury, will be 23
They need a couple of defenders to come through but they look pretty set going forward for the next few tournaments

Exactly. On this basis defenders in the box have to keep their arms to their sides like Riverdance and can't raise their feet above calf level.

OK having not rewatched it I will concede that. However, the ball was traveling out of play and it cannot be said that Kane was impeded. As for this studs up thing, it's getting a bit ridiculous. I understand during a tackle, but it's pretty hard to block a shot without raising one's studs.

Will fully admit to being very biased but I honestly doubt it. Watching it live I assumed VAR had spotted something in the buildup and was scratching my head with every replay they showed.
One thing I am sure of, is that if it had gone against Wales in a semifinal then we'd still be moaning about it ( *cough*Joe Jordan) 40 years later.

Wireless festival to finish early on Sunday to give fans "plenty of time to travel home" to watch the Euro 2024 final. I'd be livid if I bought a ticket for that.

When I was younger, I’d have been rooting for Spain, but after many yrs watching football behind me, I wouldn’t be too bothered if England won.
The English media would be unbearable, but I have many English friendships I’ve made over the yrs, through work, holidays and football. Most of them txt me good luck messages when we played Portugal in the semis.
As for the final itself, I ridiculed Southgate earlier in this thread, and although they’ve reached the final, they have ridden their luck a fair bit in an easier side of the draw.
That said, they topped their group while other top sides didn’t.
I feel that England are well capable of winning, if Southgate changed the habit of a lifetime, and played his more attacking team, including Shaw, Palmer, and Toney or Watkins, and went for a toe to toe slug fest with the Spanish.
I do feel though that he’ll be his usually cautious self, and lose out again.
With the Squad and draw he’s had, that will be failure in my book.

Same for me , I have found the English hard to bear most of my life when it came to football.
After seeing the furore when Wales went far in the Euros I cant see much difference and get it, I guess . Scotland have never given me that journey .
It would be OK in my eyes if England win , Gareth Southgate will be hailed a hero after previously having had beer lashed on him by his own fans,
as long as the end justifies the means.
-
Re: EUROS FINAL. ENGLAND v SPAIN
My son-in-law is English through and through, but wanted England to fail up to now because he wanted Southgate to get the boot.
Now that Southgate is likely to stay he said "I might as well root for them now, but I still hate Southgate!"
-
Re: EUROS FINAL. ENGLAND v SPAIN
I quite like Southgate - as a person if not a manager.
Most of the England squad are much more likeable than in the past.
I live in England and my partner is English as are most of my friends.
COME ON SPAIN!
