I guess in our lives the financial implications would be at the forefront of our minds when considering moving to a different country, but if you are fleeing a warzone or persecution, you might have a different perspective. We should be proud that as a country we are perceived this way - and not be doing all we can to prove them wrong.Quote:

As an immigrant myself (but I am white, so that's okay http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/thumbup.gif ), I migrated not for financial reasons but for a different lifestyle and culture. As it turns out, my hard graft and good fortune has seen me benefit financially, but that wasn't my reason for migrating.Quote:

They know what the Mail readers wants (to feel outraged and titillated) and they serve it up on a platter. They're laughing at you. http://www.ccmb.co.uk/images/smiley_icons/thumbup.gifQuote:

It's a shame how the papers have gone in this country, the guardian's website is going the same way too.Quote:

Why do posters find it necessary to pretend they 1] work in France, 2] know people in the Daily Mail who just happen to agree with the poster. It adds 'weight' to an argument but is plainly made up for effect...Quote:

I think there is this misconception in the West that we are obliged to embrace any "alien" culture and value it as highly as our own, or otherwise be labelled "racist" or "whatever-phobic".
Multiculturalism works to a certain degree, but I feel it is important that newcomers primarily adapt to the country's dominant, existing culture, whilst making minor positive contributions. The newcomers should also want to be a citizen of their new country and should support it (even if they support the sports team of their old country). This is what has been happening in the West, and elsewhere, for centuries. This is the way that works for everyone. That is why so many people want to come and live in the West.
However, there seems to now be a trend of a small (but growing) number of migrants and children of migrants who do not want to be a part of the country they live in, even if they were born there and educated there, etc. There is open dislike, even hatred, of the adoptive country and its people and values and a rejection of its culture. Huge areas become monocultural rather than multicultural. This can cause problems.
Sorry, I must have missed the bit where we've been targeting future asylum seekers. Is that raf/ British government policy?Quote:
