Stagnant wages at low/mid levels shrinking the potential targets for increased taxation, growing retired class due to property wealth and a massive increase in numbers in receipt of some kind of disability benefit basically puts the government (whoever it is) in a no win situation. The numbers don't add up now and that will only get worse over the coming years with the increase in prevalence of disabilities amongst teenagers.

Have read a fair few 'labour need to be more labour to win over voters' articles/quotes and all they talk about is cancelling benefit cuts (including means testing of wfa). Might be blunt of me but my version of labour 'being more labour' would involve becoming bolder and more ambitious on policies that affect everyone in the UK, I can't see that happening with reeves as chancellor though.

Really do think they're going to come unstuck though. Councils by and large spend their money on statutory duties relating to social care and SEND. The public think they spend all their money on collecting bins and fixing potholes.

I remember watching a question on local authorities during one of the leaders debates before the general election and all Rishi and Starmer talked about was bins and potholes.

Never once have I voted for a Tory at national level or at local level but!! and there is usually a but!!!, I stopped voting GE’s at Tony Blair, it was an easy decision to make once it was established that his government in lock step with Bush and other leaders in Europe bombed the shit out of IRAQ based on lies, I have voted in local elections periodically since, usually Labour but have gone independent on two occasions, not voting Tory isn’t a badge of honour, people are entitled to vote for their preferred choice in a democracy, I tend to think that the family background has a profound affect with your politics especially when younger, with my family coming out of Grangetown and Splott, it was only going to be RED although oddly one of my Grandparents who was a steelworker was a big Maggie voter.

The dearth of suitable candidates for the leaders job in either main party is far worse than it has ever been since I began to have an understanding of politics in the sixties.

Perhaps with the exception of Andy Burnham, but he is not an MP at present.

I am not convinced it's as breathtaking as you think. We have already seen an association with the American right/trump costing votes in Germany and elections in Canada and Australia.

Farage and Reform are already leaning hard into phoney doge and dei narratives and will doubtlessly continue to be trump-aligned until the bitter end. I actually think the prospect of marmite pantomime villain Farage becoming PM might be the only thing that can save Labour at the next election although some kind of LD/LAB coalition certainly looks more likely right now.
