This has gone from disappointing to embarrassing.

Re: MIDDLESBROUGH v CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Just not happening tonight, was always going to be a tough ask with injuries and fixtures piling up.
-
Re: MIDDLESBROUGH v CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
It’s been very poor this half but it’s fine margins. Tanner’s effort goes in off the post and we then sit back and win it 1-0. Instead it’s a comfortable defeat. Shows the importance with the way we set up of getting the first goal

Maybe, but he's looked good in the target man role the last two games, and in that role you will have those games like tonight away from home where you have to be the outlet and hold the ball up to give your team a chance to get up the pitch, and his touch and passing was very poor IMO.

Spot on. Winning run was always going to come to an end at some point.

So how do other clubs manage it then? Or is it just us that have injuries and fixtures piling up?
I never understand this as an excuse, as if we are somehow different to other clubs.

Grant has done nothing all game

Re: MIDDLESBROUGH v CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Middlesboro have looked decent tonight. They’ve underachieved this season whereas we have massively overachieved
-
Re: MIDDLESBROUGH v CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Defeats are going to come this season, but Adams at right back was such a big tactical mistake. You would hope Bulut is forced into answering why bench a recognised right back in favour of starting Adams.
Cardiff were constantly under pressure down their right flank. Which forced the most direct attacking threat in Tanner to play more defensively throughout his time on the pitch. Tanner arguably at fault for losing out to Engel which lead to the Boro opener. But that opportunity came from a weak Adams clearance.
Hooking Tanner when a goal down made no sense and the change to Ugbo didn't correct the problem on the pitch which was Adams.
Once he finally addressed the issue the damage was done and Cardiff were forced into chasing the game which always opens up the opportunity to concede on a counter when there is an over commitment up top...
Onto the next one, but this tactical blunder cannot go unnoticed.
P.s. how long until O'Dowda and or Bowler are fit again. Watching Grant continue to struggle and fail to take on his man tonight was hard to watch.

Most other teams don't win 5 in a row very often either?

He is a very frustrating player to watch and concedes possession so often.

What has that got to do with my point.

Boro had 3 players out tonight, injured or ill. We have a similar amount, if not more. They had an extra day to recover and didn’t have to travel across the country yesterday. How about showing some support for your team?

Yeah all the other clubs are winning 5 on the bounce aren't they?

Possibly but when you work hard away from home frustrating your opponents whose fans are getting on their back, you have to take your chances when they come.
If Grant, who looks good at times but poor decision making let's him down, squares the ball in the first half for an Olly Tanner tap in, Tanner probably scores his chance early in the second half and they have to come at us.
Fine margins.

Yeah it does. 4 wins and 1 loss is dealing well with injuries and fixture congestion, you were implying we hadn't dealt with it when other clubs do..
Basically this board is a bunch of people who forecast us to go down, now pissing in their panties because we didn't win 5 in a row.

Was always going to be a tough game. Plenty of injuries, Middlesbrough finding form we were always going to be on the back foot.

Spot on, I think Grant could do with a rest now. O'Dowda and Bowler gives us much more. Adams at full back was a failed experiment but we badly missed Collins. I wish Bulut wasnt so quick to pull Tanner.
-
Re: MIDDLESBROUGH v CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Taking Tanner off negated the only forward threat City had.....he was the only one that looked like doing something up front.

It's weird how people only complain of tactical blunders when we lose, no city manager has ever made a bad sub when we have won.. Almost seems as though people on here know absolutely nothing about football and just base their opinions on whether we win or lose.. cant be that though.
Agree on Grant though, he looks bereft of confidence going forward. I would imagine the Tanner and Wintle subs are down to minutes.
-
Re: FT: MIDDLESBROUGH 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Spiritless and lethargic. Adams and Grant can be dumped. The subs made no influence at all and none looked like they wanted to be there. Honourable exceptions being Goutas and McGuiness

Nah, I got it, thanks though.
When injuries and fixtures pile up, you need to make decisions about resting players or playing squad players you wouldn't otherwise need to make. Other teams do have similar issues and do the same, but given that we've won 4 league games on the bounce, we are clearly doing much better than most of the other teams in the division under the same circumstances. However, the luck is bound to run out at some point and tonight was an example of that (not helped by some odd tactical decisions admittedly). If teams regularly went on 5+ game winning runs during the teeth of the fixture list right before an international break, then you'd be right that we shouldn't use it as going part way to explaining why we've lost tonight.
Also, while it's still not an excuse we have our captain and best player out, starting LB and maybe next most important player out, 2 best/most complete wingers out, first/second choice forward out... I think we probably are in the top 5 in the division right now in terms of impactful injury problems.

Re: FT: MIDDLESBROUGH 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Shame we didn’t win all the remaining games this season but I guess you have to lose sometime.
-
Re: FT: MIDDLESBROUGH 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Injuries and long journeys caught up with us tonight. Having said that we have played a lot worse.
Hopefully the manager can cobble together a side Saturday that will give us the win.
International break can’t come too soon.
-
Re: FT: MIDDLESBROUGH 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Poor management tonight, with the wrong team, many of whom were playing out of position, and wrong tactics.
-
Re: FT: MIDDLESBROUGH 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
7th, at worst 8th after 10 games - anybody not happy with that?
-
Re: FT: MIDDLESBROUGH 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
6 games in this block of fixtures.
12 points from those six games is promotion form.
We got 12 points from the first 4 games.
So anything tonight or Saturday is a bonus.

I think plenty of people on here have been very complimentary of Bulut during the last month and his tactics and the in game changes he's made.
Tonight a win maybe wasn't on the cards but now it's the second time he's replaced Tanner who was our main attacking threat with Ugbo and we've completely lost shape and offered less going forward afterwards, and Adams being on the pitch after half time with two full back options on the bench (even if you think it wasn't a strange decision to even roll the dice and start him there) can only be described as absolutely bizarre.
Doesn't mean anyone has lost faith in Bulut or doesn't think he's the best manager we've had in forever, but we're here to discuss the games.
-
Re: FT: MIDDLESBROUGH 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Winnable one that, thought they looked a shadow of the team they were second half of last season down here.
Started reasonably enough but they slowly got higher up the pitch and we never quite got momentum back. Looked flat all over, could definitely do with the likes of Bowler and O'Dowda to provide some rotation going forward and O'Dowda LB if needed.
Still we seem good at CCS again so hoping we can bounce back Saturday.
-
Re: FT: MIDDLESBROUGH 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Frustrating, Adams at right back was odd and not needed, we lost our balance because of it.
We go again, lots of dissapointing performances. Was hoping for a big game from Etete, the service was poor but he needs to do much more.

Absolutely right, and disappointing that despite bringing on attacking players to try and get back into the game, we were hanging on at the end with only one team looking like scoring. There was no effective response to going a goal down.

That's a very good point. Of course it's disappointing when we lose but some people just can't take defeat and waste no time in castigating the players and the manager despite us winning four in a row, a statistic that seemed highly improbable after the carnage of the previous season.
-
Re: FT: MIDDLESBROUGH 2 - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Need Collins or at worst O'Dowda back quickly to prevent that defensive lineup seeing the light of day again.

We should never have let Simpson go.
