Gareth Newham, who heads a justice and violence prevention program at the Institute for Security Studies in South Africa.
“As an independent Institute tracking violence and violent crime in South Africa, if there was any evidence of either a genocide or targeted violence taking place against any group based on their ethnicity this, we would be amongst the first to raise (the) alarm and provide the evidence to the world.”
There are about 2.7 million white Afrikaners, who are descendants of Dutch and French settlers, in South Africa. About 80% of the people living in South Africa are Black. From 1948 until the early 1990s, South Africa lived under apartheid rule, racial segregation that gave only white people power and forced Black South Africans to live separately from white people.
In response to our email seeking evidence for Trump’s statements, the White House provided no data. A spokesperson said Afrikaners told U.S. officials about violent attacks, death threats, vandalism and racial slurs against farmers.
Newham said the primary motive for almost all farm attacks is robbery, which has long been documented.
“Attacks where there may be evidence of racial or political motives (i.e. slogans written on the wall at a scene of a crime, or words spoken by the attacker according to the victim), are exceedingly rare and make up only a few percent of the cases recorded,”
Newham said.
The majority of murder victims nationwide are poor, under- or unemployed young Black males....

This is the Donald Trump thread and this particular discussion arose because Trump, his administration and his press machine have chosen to label the situation of white Afrikaners in South Africa as one of genocide, whilst refusing to describe the mass murder, starvation and displacement of Palestinians in Gaza and Palestine in general as genocide.
They are not attempting to project equivalence - they are claiming that South African Afrikaners are the bigger victims!
It is not about a points scoring exercise, it is about challenging the lies, deflection and cynical abuse of language by Trump and his many apologists (including on here). Some relatively wealthy and privileged white farmers in South Africa have been killed during robberies on their farms. Some of the people responsible have used racial labels in identifying their targets. But South Africa is still a violent and broken country after centuries of colonial exploitation and apartheid, and white victims of crime are individual tragedies but not disproportionate to the overall picture of violent death in that country.
There is no state policy of ethnic discrimination and no attempt by a dominant majority to destroy South African whites. They are in government, hold many of the most powerful positions in South African society, and are generally much richer, more privileged and safer than non-white South Africans. The Trump claims are an inversion of the truth. They are a sick PR stunt.

JOHANNESBURG — President Donald Trump showed a screenshot of Reuters video taken in the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of what he falsely presented on Wednesday as evidence of mass killings of white South Africans.
“These are all white farmers that are being buried,” said Trump, holding up a print-out of an article accompanied by the picture during a contentious Oval Office meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
In fact, the video, published by Reuters on Feb. 3 and subsequently verified by the news agency’s fact check team, showed humanitarian workers lifting body bags in the Congolese city of Goma. The image was pulled from Reuters footage shot following deadly battles with Rwanda-backed M23 rebels.
:hehe:
With a typical Karoline Leavitt response when challenged. So unprofessional.
CCMB massive rules:

President Trump said Monday he is pardoning Scott Jenkins, a former Virginia sheriff who was convicted of making several businessmen sworn law enforcement officers in exchange for cash bribes.
Former Culpeper County Sheriff Jenkins, 53, was found guilty on fraud and bribery charges and sentenced to 10 years in prison in March. But on Monday, Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social that Jenkins and his family "have been dragged through HELL by a Corrupt and Weaponized Biden DOJ."
-
Jenkins was indicted in 2023 on 16 counts. In December, a jury found Jenkins guilty of one count of conspiracy, four counts of honest services fraud and seven counts of bribery. Jenkins appealed his conviction in April.
-
Acting United States Attorney Zachary T. Lee said at the time that Jenkins violated his oath of office "and this case proves that when those officials use their authority for unjust personal enrichment, the Department of Justice will hold them accountable."
A longstanding Trump supporter, Jenkins is the latest ally of the president to receive a pardon.
On Mr. Trump's first day in office, he granted pardons and commutations to more than 1,000 people charged in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Mr. Trump has also granted clemency to several other public officials. He pardoned Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was convicted of trying to sell Barack Obama's Senate seat, and Michelle Fiore, a Las Vegas politician and loyal Trump backer convicted of paying for plastic surgery and other personal expenses with money intended to build a statue for a slain police officer.
He does love a pardon!
Almost as much as a tariff!
