I got a ticket for doing about 40 around the Pentagon which is 25. Stupid really as there are 3 lanes in each direction.
It was on Boxing Day a while back and it really pissed me off.

We did a similar road trip in the early 1990's. As you say the 50 mph limit on the roads there is ridiculous. Mostly the roads are as straight as an arrow for tens of miles ahead to the horizon with practically zero traffic and just desert on either side. The road to Monument Valley comes to mind.
The temptation to put your foot down is very strong but there was always the risk of a cop with a handheld radar lurking behind a rocky outcrop or behind vegetation on the central reservation (although pretty rare out there!). We were told that if a truck driver was exceeding the limit then it was ok to keep up with him as these guys keep in touch with each other via CB radio and give advance warning of radar traps.
Exactly 60 years ago this month I got my driving licence. No speeding tickets so far!
