FT: CARDIFF CITY 2 - 1 READING. Match thread

Think some of the criticism of Kellyman on here is misplaced,when he got more of the ball in the second half he terrorised their defence,our basic passing game was so poor today,especially defensively,passing around at the back,inevitably leads us to panic,we just ain’t good enough to play that game comfortably.I would love to see Salech and Robinson starting together,as for midfield,we’ve got a creative, positive player in the squad,who for some reason (which I’d like to see made public) can’t even make the match day subs,if Robertson is not going to play for us again,please put us out of our misery and let us know why,finally,Trott was superb,I could be wrong but I thought their goal was a bit special.

Wing played further forward today and it made a difference. We were a lot better going forward. Savage has been very quiet this season but much better and box to box today. However if we can't do the basics of tracking and marking we will keep conceding goals and losing games.
Very frustrating because there is a half decent team there.

Reading a really poor side and the fact they bossed the game for spells is a worry. Thought Orient were much better a few weeks ago whereas today was us letting a poor side impose themselves on the game. Another 3 points though we'll be there or thereabouts even with our glaring limitations which is a good sign at least

Marshall was very good, don't get me wrong - but Trott is the best I've seen (I go back to the days of Ron Healey and Bill Irwin).

I enjoyed the first few games and parts of the second half today but thought the first half was awful and didn't enjoy it.

We need midfield players in January

Hes made some great saves. However their first is really poor and why hes got a 7. Im sure he knows it as well. Hes really good though but this is L1 and a long way to go before he can claim to be better than Marshall. In my opinion.

Midfield was non-existent today. Needs serious work and repositioning of players. We barely won a second ball and 50/50s we lost 9 times out of 10.

Turnbull drops too deep, Colwill’s too far forward at times leave us so exposed and we aren’t there to get loose ball. Sort it BBM

Always seems better to discuss the weaknesses after a win. Hope BBM keeps on learning.
So what did we learn?
Osho isnÂ’t a kid and canÂ’t keep getting these chances A liability despite some dribbling strengths. Probably makes the other defenders nervous.
Had misgivings with that starting line up and all pretty much proved correct.
Davies must start before the appalling Willock and Robinson should start too. Kellyman was awful apart from the way he made the goal, IÂ’m not sure of his attitude. Thinks he doesnÂ’t need to work. He needs to get real as heÂ’s never getting in a PL side.
Kacapio excellent as was Trott. He saved us again.

When Davies does start he's not very good. Hes best used off the bench. Willock put a shift in today, although not much came off for him in attracking positions

Willock is similar to Rubin Colwill - they both think they can't have the ball taken from them.

Brian Barry-Murphy says his decision to haul Cian Ashford off during Cardiff City's win over Reading at the Cardiff City Stadium wasn't one he took lightly - but insists it was the right call.

Ashford was hooked in the 89th minute of the 2-1 win over Reading, just ten minutes after being introduced off the bench himself.

Reading were pushing for an equaliser at the time, after Omari Kellyman and Yousef Salech had cancelled out Lewis Wing's first-half opener, and the City boss insists it was the right call in order to see out the game.

However, he admits it wasn't an easy decision to make.

“I didn't like it," he said when asked about having to make the call. "We’d made all of our changes to try and win the game. The game was chaos and we have an obligation to try and win the game to be at the top of the table.

“For me, it just looked inevitable with all those attacking players on the pitch that we were going to concede chances and obviously Yousef could have come off, but they were so dangerous with their set-pieces, free-kicks on corners that, for us, that would have been a huge problem.

“At that point, I made a decision that I thought it was best for us to win the game. Cian was the victim of being taken off. It's not something that I enjoy based on the value we hold Cian in.”

Trott is a really good keeper and I'm glad we have him but Marshall did it for TEN YEARS.

I think a lot of the stats driven sites have marked Trott down for letting in the shot from a mile out that ended up going in the middle of the goal fairly low down. .
however it swerved wickedly and Trott was unsighted by our defence.
the rest of the game he was absolutely immense - one of the best goalkeeping displays I can remember, and I know a few Reading fans who were saying the same.

In his post match interview BBM mentioned Chambers was the only fit centre half. Osho and Fish had niggles all week a didn’t train until Thursday (noticed Fish had his leg strapped up). Said he's never seen Osho make errors like he has.

Teams do generally find it pretty difficult to get the ball off Rubin

Not one of his best games today and he still kept things ticking over nicely and drove forward well

We need a physical player in that defensive midfield role who can cover ground if we're going to play with 2 advanced midfielders. Neither Turnbull nor Wintle can do that. Shame Eli King is injured.

Some of these mistakes Osho is making are bizarre, especially how regularly they're happening. Wouldn't expect that from a teenager, never mind an experienced pro

Willock shit out of a few 50/50s today, unacceptable, a few fans down by the touchline let him know as well and there were a few verbals/gestures, the fans were correct. Bottling out is not acceptable.
As for the result, its games like these than win the league, outplayed on occasions, flying by the seat of your pants yet you win, 3 points, the clubs up there with you say, ‘Bollocks, they’ve won again’, it’s not pretty but 3 points is 3 points.

We don't really need a physical player in a defensive midfield role, if that were the case then it would be really simple to recruit such a player. We need a good player who has the ability to position themselves well, read situations. That's a much harder find, hence why we don't have a player like that.

Credit to kellyman on his goal, really positive, cut inside well. His shot wasn't the greatest, but guess what, if a player hits the target then the keeper has to work. Is it me or are we pretty shit with making the opposition keeper work when we shoot from outside of the box?

Physical in the sense they can cover ground

I agree with what you say, but I think Wintle is actually pretty decent on those fronts, however he doesn't have the legs to cover the gaps that are left with how advanced our midfielders start. I think there's a case for withdrawing how high one of the Colwills play, ideally Joel, to help out with building moves because at the moment whoever's in that 6 role looks overwhelmed at times.

Yup, although by playing one of the midfield players in a less advanced role, would that take away our attacking intent, something that has got us out of the shit on a few occasions this season. It's crazy how many chances we give opposing teams.

I'm not buying that from BBM. Ashford must have pissed BBM off. Maybe his commitment during the game, effort, work rate etc. I don't know because i didn't see the game. There were a few minutes left, just tell Ashford to sit in and work, carry the ball when it's heavily in our favour, but he hooked him. I may be wrong, but that doesn't sit right with me, He'd only been on for 10 minutes or so? Did anyone see anything that stood out in Ashfords game that merited him getting pulled?

He had the one break where we had equal numbers and he cut it back and then gave it away and Reading countered. Should have done far better with it but then to be fair to him, nothing the rest of our forwards weren’t doing for much of the last 20 minutes. Robinson, Willock and Salach had at least one each as well.

The real strange decision for me was to bring on Ng, we obviously needed a midfielder more than another defender as we were being totally overrun there. Seemed obvious that it was crying out for Wintle instead.

How can you say that Ashford must have pissed BBM off if you didn't see the game?
We were under the cosh and bringing on someone who could perform better defensive duties especially when as he says, trying to defend a lead, seems a perfectly reasonable rationale.
He isn't the first sub to be subbed, in fact I've seen it quite a few times in recent years when teams have been in similar circumstances.
BBM seems a straight guy to me and I don't see any reason why he should try and lie.

An extra body in the buildup doesn't necessarily take away attacking threat if ew can do it properly

Perhaps Wintle may have been a better option but I can see why he went for Ng dealing with crosses in the box of which there were many, especially when they were chasing the game.

I think you did well and were unlucky to lose. As has been pointed out, I think we just have more quality where it counts. Including at goalkeeper. On today's showing, I don't think you need to worry about your league position.

Except the one time Ng had to deal with a high cross into the box he totally missed the header and it created a scramble from which Reading easily could have scored. We didn't need more bodies in the box, we needed to stop Reading walking through our midfield like there was nobody there.
