Agreed. He was definitely a big improvement on Warnock that season, especially after lockdown.

The problem we have is that we'd struggle to do any better in terms of "known" gaffers...
I'm not saying Lamouchi is the answer, and I'm not saying that there's no better lesser known options out there, but if we do sign him on an initial short-term contract, then his starting form, so to speak, would at least (hopefully) be enough to steady the ship and keep us up.

Not sure he's the long-term answer though obviously.

I really would have liked Morrison or Hudson to have worked out and taken us in a new direction of playing style and up the ladder. Both seemed respected coaches but just feel it was an easy, lazy option from the board to appoint them as manager and "see how it goes". They were already here but ultimately unfair to throw them in the deep end for a club of this size. Maybe they need to try their luck in the lower leagues where the pressure is not so intense.
We just don't have the time for untested and do need a manager who knows their stuff. The transfer budget is obviously non existent so whether Lamouchi has enough contacts for freebies and loans remains to be seen. He does seem an experienced manager and football guy all round but being out of management for 18 months or so does have a slight concern.
To be honest though long term solution nobody knows, his remit is clearly keep us up and we'll see in the summer.
Sean Dyche had a decent return at Burnley and with their new direction with Kompany that seems to have worked a blinder, very jealous of that success for a club of their size.
Its almost impossible for us to pick a long term manager who we'd like at the helm when we have zero communication with the clubs hierarchy to even know what their plans for the future are.

That is true...but

We are doing things the "poundland bargain way" because that is the reality of our current financial situation.

Until last season for the last decade we either had parachute money or were in the premier league. This means that we had on average about 3 times as much money to spend on the side (transfers/wages) as the majority of teams in the division (2 thirds to 3 quarters usually), that's roughly the financial disparity you see when playing against teams from a division below.
All those years of financial advantage and we squandered it all - we built nothing. We ended up with players who were below par at this level, ageing and on massive wages so we couldn't get rid of them, this has severely hampered our ability to do anything much, as we've been up against it with FFP while we've been weaning ourselves of these expensive players.
Add covid and court cases into the mix and that also doesn't help our financial situation.

Nowadays, some of the noises coming out of the club are slightly more optimistic - we are investing in younger players, who have the potential to improve and increase in value, bringing through homegrown players and trying to modernise tactically. All sensible things to do, but until we get the expensive years off the FFP calculation it will always be challenging to do anything other than on a shoestring. A couple of seasons ago our wage bill was £35m and we were crap - that shouldn't happen.

If we can turn it around this season and start to improve, and the youngsters get more used to this level then maybe there will be more room for bigger investment next season or more likely the year after.
