Re: Gareth Southgate Is A Gent
Whilst not in any way upset about England's demise last night, not least because of the gip I got from my English mates for our cameo. I did leave the game with a few thoughts:
It seemed the best matched high level game. If England had won you could not have argued it wasn't deserved;
They have a talented group of players. Far more likeable than the last "golden generation" of Terry, Cole, Lampard, Rooney etc;
Looking at the age profile of the back 6 they need to peak at the next couple of tournaments where there is a reasonable chance they could prosper looking at other teams and how they are aging;
They need to identify and bring on some quality defenders within the next four years if their talented attacking threat built around the burgeoning Bellingham is ever going to win silverware.
A bit like the England cricket team they may also ponder whether a Joe Root type leader such as Southgate or a Ben Stokes type might be a riskier but better option going forward.
And lastly, is there a footballing nation of such heritage, resources, population and infrastructure that has delivered so little over the last half century?

By time the next world cup comes along 7 of England's starting 11 will be 32+ I Can't see them ever bringing it home.

Re: Gareth Southgate Is A Gent
I think England have a pretty good chance of winning the next Euros, and I think that's Southgate's dilemma as to whether he should stay or go.
They're still a bit to reliant on Kane up front, but if Bellingham keeps maturing then they have a decent chance and I think Southgate doesn't want another manager to be the one to oversee a potential win.

Re: Gareth Southgate Is A Gent
A better manager would have won one of the last three tournaments. Southgate is shit, and was especially poor in the last world cup and euros. I think he picked the right team against France the other night, and I think England are a better side than them.

I thought the game could have gone either way but France are a superior side

I wanted them to win, had a young lad in the Railway tell me I wasn't a true Scot through that fact. ... I did have a right few quid on England as well.:hehe:
I wonder how many who are slagging England off were cheering them on this morning in the cricket?

Re: Gareth Southgate Is A Gent
There is an article on BBC sport where he has actually said he hasn't enjoyed a lot of the last 18 months , he doesn't want to get 6 months down the line and decide to pack it in. Unless he is playing a game I wouldn't be surprised if he walked.

Re: Gareth Southgate Is A Gent
not been that fussed on Southgate, but over the years he's won me over. this tournament I think he couldn't have done any more really. they are an elite international side, of which there are 4 or 5, but only 1 can win it.
that penalty goes in and they probably win that game and would now be big favourites for the world cup

got a good record, not sure what anyone else could have done against France, the attacking 1/2 of the side must be one of the best in the world ( as a collective )

Brazil , Argentina , Italy , Spain , Germany .....elite sides
England are not in that gang , they don't win anything

Over 20 years since Brazil won it, 24 years for Argentina
Not sure you can go with that when deciding elite international team
While Fifa rankings are flawed, they give a pretty good idea of where the bigger teams are, and England are always high in the top 10

Re: Gareth Southgate Is A Gent
Southgate is a Harrods Steve Morison, an internal, establishment-safe bet with blind backing.
With their talent pool, they should be guaranteed last 8, any journeyman manager even Russell Slade would be able to achieve that. The key achievement part of his CV doesn't even read as well as Steve Coopers (who is definitely not a journeyman). He is a by the Eufa coaching manual, safe as houses, identikit, modern manager.
For instance. Their best player, Kane, who when playing for Spurs drops deep, pulls center halfs where they don't want to go then Son or Richarlason run into the space he has vacated. You need to play with genuine wide forwards, but he had Foden there as he couldn't deal with the media spin with him not playing. Citeh also has him out wide but to say their system is fluid is an understatement, totally contrasting systems. Saka looked good as it was his best position for club and country.
I am a massive believer in the player's win-or-lose games, not the manager, but at some point, managers have to make key calls, and that's the difference between going home or playing in the semi. I am not saying what and when he should have done something, I work in a factory and he gets paid £100k a week, but that is to be placed higher than the top 8 with a billion-pound squad
Put Van Gaal in charge of England and there'll win a biggie.

I agree with most of this. The FA seem more concerned in having someone uncontroversial and toeing the party line than winning anything.
Gareth Southgate isn't a winner.

Re: Gareth Southgate Is A Gent
England are losers. It's weird because the players are all world-class (except Harry Maguire). And Southgate has a brain. They just don't have it in them. Harry Kane, formerly one of the most lethal strikers on the planet skied a penalty. Now, admittedly, Brazil, Germany and Belgium are out too so they're in good company. But France, for me the best team in the tournament were there for the taking. England just couldn't do it. Like Belgium, they just don't have the bottle.

If they played with the same bravado as their cricket team just might win.

There’s a few more than Harry Maguire who aren’t world class.

Four years ago in Russia, didn't Kane get the Golden Boot? Watching his penalties in that WC I'd never seen anything like it. I was amazed the net contained some of them. I didn't see his miss, but has he really slumped that badly in 4 years? I stress, I'm just curious as to why he's no longer the force he was in such a short space of time.
