He contributes too. He's got 3 goals and 3 assists since late December. I really like him, too. He's got good feet, works hard, covers his full back, must be a dream to play with.

Clever player without looking clever. If he continues to progress, and there is always an 'If' in my opinion, then clubs will be in for him. That mistake against Pompey was uncharacteristic, and i would put it down to a bit of tiredness, he's covered some ground over the past couple of months, and maybe Riza got it right with him yesterday starting on the bench, although he should have come on 20 minutes earlier.
Hopefully Salech and Alves can help so we don't need to run Ashford and Robinson into the ground. It still blows my mind that people want to drop Robinson. He's scored 8 (EIGHT in teletext speak) more than our next top scorer, which is 3. I'd start Ashford, Robinson and Salech myself. Those 3 score and assist, so play them.
I find it odd as well. I have a theory, although i'm in no way saying that anyone on this board thinks this way, it's just the only thing i can come up with. Robinson isn't one of those players who looks like he's running his arse in to the ground, he certainly works hard, but doesn't give that all out dying for the shirt shit that so many fans of ours seem to like, and when it's not working for him, it's then where i think some of our fans can get on his back a bit. Personally, i like his goals record, and some of the goals he has scored have been difficult. Didn't he have half a sniff yesterday, but fluffed it a bit? and that volley against Pompey that he should have hit across the keeper, although that's a difficult skill for most players, he certainly hasn't really been presented with the chance Salech scored on Saturday, although he's not really a box striker.
The good thing about Salech (so it seems) is that he is more of a box striker and he's physical, that's a new dimension for us. I'm hoping it can sort of click a bit now that we're at the back end of the season, if not, it's going to the wire, if it isn't already.
I would agree with a lot of that. I think he's a very good finisher who can probably score goals at a decent rate even in the Prem, but when he's not doing that then he doesn't offer much else so his overall game is never going to be good enough to start there. He's very hot and cold but strikers who can score and aren't usually aren't playing at this level. If anybody still played 4-4-2 think he could be a very good partnership with Salech and he'd probably look a lot better - 20-25 years ago he'd be a perfect second striker.
The one thing that drives me nuts is when he's caught offside so often, it looks like an effort thing (even if maybe sometimes it it's not) and I think that's a very valid criticism of his game. Doesn't help when we can barely get the ball out of our own half, we finally have a chance to break and give our defense a bit of a rest and he's 2 yards offsides because he hasn't got himself back level, and that's happened too often in my opinion.
That mistake against Pompey where somebody gives the ball away close to halfway happens a ton every game, plus it was on the touchline. He was totally let down by his veteran teammates letting them walk it in from there in my opinion. 19 out of 20 times nobody remembers a single bad touch in that position.
I agree with that. I think there's also a lot of "what have you done for me lately?". Robinson has gone 3 games without a goal (which is about 13 better than we're used to!) so people are getting twitchy.
I'd like to see them together, Robinson floating around Select. While they're not a traditional big and little partnership, I think it could really suit us.
That would be an interesting combination, especially with Ashford and Alves on either flank
I’m not sure we’d have the two central midfield players to cover all the work required, but the fact that we have won 3 games in 19in the league I’d be tempted to try anything that’s going to give us a chance of 3 points on Saturday!!!
We need wins, simple as that, it will be interesting to see how we line up at Plymouth
With games coming thick and fast from Saturday onwards there has to be a bit more flexibility on how we approach them
Perhaps the doubt about Robinson is that he doesn't really play like a 9 or a 10. In fact we've invented a new position - the 9 and a half. I'm not sure he would've scored Salech's goal on Saturday but would've been loitering around the penalty spot for the pull back.
This is his third season here and his first good one (bearing in mind the second was hit by injury (and sulking) and the first was a general shambles) so while this board is often riddled with recency bias, perhaps it isn't a case of what have you done for us lately but is this the new normal or a glitch in the old normal?
The issue with Rubin Colwill as I see it is how his unpredictability affects the rest of the players. A few times on Saturday he picked up the ball, went on a mazey run (often going backwards first), then at somepoint either had a shot,or laid the ball off.
Trouble was that the rest of the team, in particular the new players, didn't know how to react. For all the training routines that Alves and Mannsverk did in midweek, I doubt they involved trying to position themselves for one of Colwill's runs.
In his defence, he quite often goes on those runs because nobody's moving at all to offer themselves, he also tends to keep the ball when he does this. Tanner's a limited player but he's honest and will look for the ball, there were times on Saturday where El Ghazi was practically marking their full back
He definitely needs to learn when to shoot though, couple of opportunities that he spurned against Bristol by taking an extra touch
nobody in the team has more shot creating actions, or passes into the penalty area, he has the second highest progressive carries (behind
O'dowda), the highest progressive passes.
he has the second highest expected goals+assists (behind Robinson). there are plenty of players who are contributing a hell of a lot less than Rubin Colwill yet he's constantly the one being criticised
Shot creating actions, progressive carries, progressive passes.
Good grief....
Rubin Colwill made his first team debut in February 2021 and made his first Championship start in April 2021.
The 2021/22 season was Colwill’s first as a full-time member of the senior squad. He made 15 Championship starts, 19 sub appearances and scored 5 goals. He also scored in the FA Cup tie at Anfield and played twice for Wales, scoring once. Things were looking very promising indeed.
At that stage I think it’s fair to say almost everyone connected with Cardiff City held very high hopes for him. Colwill appeared to have the potential to become one of the most exciting players the club has produced in decades. Some will no doubt argue he still does.
However, since 2021/22, his Championship goals tallies read as follows:
2022/23 – 0
2023/24 – 1
2024/25 – 1
To put that into perspective, Alex Robertson has scored more Championship goals in 22 (+3) appearances for City than Colwill has managed during the last three seasons.
At the end of the day, an attacking midfielder like Colwill is in the side primarily to create and score goals, and he doesn’t do either often enough. I’ve no idea what the answer is with him as he clearly has bags of natural talent and, as a rule, I enjoy watching him play. But there’s no doubt he’s a player who flatters to deceive in terms of end product.
Yes he is frustrating and lacks that end product but I love seeing him play . It is supposed to be entertainment . He definitely does not bore me like so many of the midfielders we have had .
Would people be happy if we sold him ??
