A plan circulating in the White House to develop the “Gaza Riviera” as a string of high-tech megacities has been dismissed as an “insane” attempt to provide cover for the large-scale ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian territory’s population.
The Washington Post published on Sunday a leaked prospectus for the plan, which would see the forced displacement of Gaza’s entire population of 2 million people, and put the territory into a US trusteeship for at least a decade.
Named the Gaza Reconstitution, Economic Acceleration and Transformation Trust – or GREAT – the proposal was reportedly developed by some of the same Israelis who created and set in motion the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) with financial planning contributed by Boston Consulting Group.
Most controversially, the 38-page plan suggests what it calls “temporary relocation of all of Gaza’s more than 2 million population” – a proposal that would amount to ethnic cleansing, potentially a genocidal act.

At least nine people, including five children, have been killed in an Israeli strike while fetching water in al-Mawasi, an area of southern Gaza which Israel has designated as a safe zone, health officials said.
A doctor from al-Nasser hospital shared a picture of the children’s bodies in the hospital, as well as a picture of water jugs left in a pool of blood at the site of the attack on Tuesday.

Given that Villa supposedly have a home draw against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League, they would be insane to have it in Birmingham after the incident in Amsterdam last year. So do they host it in Hungary again and punish Villa by being unable to play in front of their home stadium fans?
I think Villa fans should mass protest Tel Aviv's inclusion in the tournament, they'd get a lot of support from other clubs on this front.

The humanitarian aid flotilla to Gaza is a serious mission with an incongruous detail: Greta Thunberg sporting a jersey of the Dublin football club Bohemians.
The Swedish activist wore the pale blue shirt during an earlier flotilla in June and again this week as vessels prepared to leave Barcelona.
However, the garment does not necessarily signify interest in football or support for the club, currently second in the League of Ireland Premier Division. It is a limited-edition jersey intended to rally funds and solidarity for Gaza.
Bohemians, a north Dublin side better known as Bohs, collaborated with the Dublin rock group Fontaines DC to make the jersey. It mixes Irish and Palestinian motifs and has raised more than €200,000 (£173,000) for the UK-based charity Medical Aid for Palestinians.
A veteran Irish activist, Caoimhe Butterly, gave the shirt to Thunberg on the flotilla that sailed in June. Israeli forces intercepted the vessels before they could deliver aid to the besieged Palestinian territory, where nearly 65,000 people have died and famine is spreading.

They just bombed Doha in Qatar, where negotiations were taking place.
Enough is enough. Ban them from all international bodies like Russia and beyond Russia's sanctions. Words are not enough, and if governments won't act, they will reap the consequences of inaction.

Rory Stewart has just asked what’s the difference between what Israel has done today and, say, India attacking Sri Lanka because Pakistani leaders were visiting that country. It’s a very fair point.

India and Pakistan are on a more even footing, so neither side could get away with doing to each other what Israel is doing to Palestine. Even though Qatar are a bigger fish, it's not going to be enough to overcome the overwhelming lobbying power of Israel, and the US will end up talking down Qatar. The US and UK are trying to give some illusion that they think this has gone too far to ride the tide of popular sentiment, but in reality, they won't ever dare to punish or reprimand Israel.

It should have been done many decades ago for both moral and legal reasons.
Starmer’s ‘conditions’ were wrong on every level.
The decision should not be linked to the immediate actions of Hamas, Israel or the Palestinian Authority. It is a decision about recognising a people, a nation, not about opinions on various governments or potential governments.
Starmer has done this now because he has been pressured to do it - by Labour MPs (and a good part of the Cabinet) by the Labour Party members, by the public (there is majority support in opinion polls and has been for about 18 months) by street demonstrations and by the bleeding out of support for him and his government - more to the political left than right.
I don’t believe it was a decision based on principle - I don’t think Starmer has those - although that looks to be the reason for most of the other countries who have recognised Palestine in recent days.
It is symbolic - but symbols often matter.
Of course the Israeli hostages should be released immediately. Of course the Palestinian hostages (those thousands in administrative detention without charge or trial - and many subjected to systematic abuse or torture) should also be released immediately.
The bigger issue is that the recognition of a Palestinian state (now adopted by over 150 countries) is tied to the 2 state solution - with a sovereign Palestine created on the 1967 borders alongside Israel. But Israel through its settlement expansion, military zones, walls, Israeli only roads, apartheid and escalating ethnic cleansing has created ‘facts on the ground’ that make the 2 state solution impossible to create.
The Israeli response (fully backed by the USA) is to step up the ethnic cleansing. Netanyahu and his government boast of this and hide nothing! If Starmer is content with a symbolic announcement very little will change and the genocide will continue.
There is not much support for 2 states any more from Palestinians or Israelis. Most (non Islamist) Palestinians want to see a single democratic state for Jews and Arabs with equal rights. Officially Hamas support 2 states - since 2017 - but unofficially probably not. Most Israelis (a large Zionist majority that has grown in recent years) want a single ethno-religious Jewish state covering all of Israel and Palestine (some also want large parts of Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Sinai included).
Will Starmer remain part of the problem or does this mark a serious move (with like minded states) to find a viable route to 2 states? I’m not holding my breathe.
