YouGov poll for The Times this afternoon: Labour 54%, Tories 21%.
The pound may be busy retreating (is it?) but so are Tory voters. Unlike the last YouGov poll that gave Labour a 17% lead, where the Tory losses mostly went to 'don't know', with this one half the Tory switchers have ticked Labour.
Much as I despise Starmer and his clique, they are being handed this on a plate by the 'government'. I suppose that means Starmer will be better at The Great Reset than Truss? Confusing this masterplan!
With the prospect of full on bloodletting next week in Birmingham I can already hear "things can only get better" ringing in my years.
Still too early to be complacent, the next election is probably two years away and an aeon in politics. However, it takes a lot of imagination to work out how the Tories can get themselves back in shape any time soon.
that is insane
Attachment 5201
clearly it will come back from that, but that would be an absolute bloodbath. the Tories would be finished
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a UK poll lead that big. As Dorcus says, a lot can change in two years, but, with Labour having enjoyed an almost uniquely stress free conference while the new PM is making Johnson look like a political genius, this is beginning to have the look of another 1997.
As much as I’d love the Tories to only get 3 seats it shows how ****ed our political system is that 21% of the votes gets 0.5% of the seats.
Same with UKIP in 2015 only getting 1 seat after winning 12% of the votes.
Labour needs to back Proportional Representation to end the 2 party race if we want this country to start advancing at anything more than a snails pace.
A, disaster for the Country. Labour 480 majority whilst jumping for joy, could lead to far right parties like in Italy if Labour didn't perform
Despise ..... to look down on with disrespect or aversion despised the weak. 2 : to regard as negligible, worthless, or distasteful despises organized religion.
How do you feel about the liar Boris and this school teacher that is running your country and taking it down the drain ...dont hold back !
I never thought that there could be a worse leader and cabinet than Boris and his cronies
Shows how little I know about it all
If it’s a ruse to open the door for him back into politics they’re doing a great job of it
It’s not going to happen is it, but I agree with you. While I’d love to see the Conservatives with only three seats, no party getting twenty one per cent should have such a small representation and, if Labour were to end with well over five hundred seats on just over half of the vote should be the signal for a concerted drive to get a more representative system adopted.
That poll is a way off anything I remember with Milliband.
You’re right though, the next ge result is unlikely
To be quite the whitewash the poll suggests.
But anything other than a decent labour majority is hard to see.
Which I don’t think anyone considered in their wildest dreams in 2019.
So that’s nice.
That very thought struck me too. I'm sure many of us have some issues with him (I'm not thrilled with his Brexit stance), but 'despising' someone who is starting to offer genuine hope of at last offering a real alternative to those that I - personally - actually really do strongly dislike? (wouldn't go as far as 'despise') Very odd.
Extremely disappointing that Jon takes this stance.
I can only presume he'd prefer a return to the failed policy platform and leader from the past two GE's.
I voted for and continue to support Starmer, who's done a superb job detoxifying and making the party electable again.
Some would clearly prefer a Tory government over a Labour one that doesn't offer them everything they want. Pragmatism is necessary to win elections and, like SP, I'm not fussed on the party's Brexit stance but understand the reasoning. Equally I'd love PR but it's not a hill to die on, with reform of the HoL and increased devolution more important.
We have covered this over many threads and months before.
I have spent most of my adult life as a Labour Party member, a branch secretary, an active campaigner. I have lived through many Labour regimes I disliked, but I got to a tipping point with Starmer and his circle. I resigned - or tried to resign - almost a year ago, although the party seems incapable of accepting or processing that resignation and still treats me like an active member in good standing. I'm not.
I listened to him for over an hour at the Sheffield leadership hustings lying through his teeth. He broke every one of his famous 10 Pledges within a year.
His leadership has been marked by a war on the left (especially the cruel and baseless attacks on socialist Jewish members), rebooting some of the worst elements of Blairism (without the energy or personality), craven support for an apartheid state, suppression of the Forde Report, failure to support the most low paid and vulnerable trying to defend themselves in the face of a cost of living crisis, wrapping himself in the Union Jack, promoted and defended people I see as reactionary racists in the Labour staff and on the NEC, and a hundred other things that rile me.
But I will vote Labour again - to get the Tories out. Any Labour government I can imagine under Starmer will be better than any Tory government. Just as Blair (war criminal and Murdoch's 'safe' option as PM) was better than the realistic alternative. But I don't have to be enthusiastic, I don't have to fund them and I don't have to spend more wet nights out on the doorstep selling the hype and the bullshit.
As you may gather, I am angry with Starmer and what has become of the Labour Party. 'Despise' seems to capture that perfectly.
And what do/did I think about Johnson and Truss? Really - you think from my posts I would prefer them? They make Starmer look like a beacon of competence, principle and integrity.
Don't be dull Claude - especially as we have discussed this on this site recently. We disagree. I have fallen out with Labour big time. You are still a fan and cheerleader. But I have said clearly that I would welcome a deeply flawed Labour government over what we have now (or had under Johnson, May or the Austerity Twins).
I think a party having 21 percent of the vote but only getting a few seats is a bit off
But it's the Tories so to see them wiped out is fair enough
