Not sure that they will be able to match the original but we shall see.
Some things should be left alone.
Classic sitcoms being on of them IMO.
Re: Fawlty Towers to return
It will not be a patch on the original, the modern world does not allow real humour to be either written, filmed or screened. Plus it can only be the Mr Cleese could do with a boost to his bank balance.
There are very few examples of reprises matching the originals...
Re: Fawlty Towers to return
Times have changed and much of the comedy in the original was of its time, so cant be replicated.
I hope they don't come to regret remaking it,but time will tell.

Yes, very few manage to retain their original charm, sitcoms in general seem to have a more limited longevity than drama for example, once you've extracted all the humour out of your original premise then it's difficult to just keep on going without it becoming predictable or ridiculous

And yet here you are writing this absolute joke

Can you imagine the amount of complaints if some of the original episodes aired today?
Different times and while funny, the landscape has changed.
I think sitcoms like Faulty Towers would be all the poorer for it.
There would be outrage at the sign at the start reading Flowery Tw@ts before any actual scenes had been shown.

Sorry RJK I was under the impression that the forum and message board was for people to write about things and express their views. I will return to observance from now on, suitably chastised.

Yes things have changed in the last 40 years, but that doesn't mean you cant still be funny - it'll need to adapt to modern sensibilities if it is going to be a success, if it just tries to be exactly like the original it'll be crap, but a few grumpy old men would have to find something else to moan about

You expressed your view, I expressed mine.

Indeed, but I think describing my message as an "absolute joke" was somewhat harsh.
However, life is too short and there are far too many other things to be concerned about.
I am crawling back under my rock.

Sorry, it seems the modern world really doesn't allow real humour to be written, filmed or screened - you were right the entire time

Touche! (I think that is how you spell it) - and I see your point.
I'll stay just outside my rock if that's OK?
Cheers.

Re: Fawlty Towers to return
Cleese used to play Basil Fawlty. Now he is Basil Fawlty (but not as funny).
Re: Fawlty Towers to return
It seemed like Fawlty Towers had been around for ages but I was surprised to learn that there were only ever 12 episodes made
Probably all the repeats from the good old BBC 🤔
Re: Fawlty Towers to return
So the guy who complains he's not on telly anymore, finally gets his chance and comes up with quite an original concept.

Classic example. Still Open All Hours. David Jason’s worst ever.

I was surprised to learn he was only 37 when they were making it. I had him much older!

Overrated anyway, not a patch on Only fools and horses.

Only Fools and Horses went on far too long.
It got poor at the end.
Also Fawley Towers different league in my opinion.
Re: Fawlty Towers to return
Only Fools and Horses was probably the best British comedy series ever made
Absolutely hilarious
Jolly Boys Outing was a classic
Delboy entering Rodney into a competition which he won and the prize was a holiday in Spain
He had to pretend he was a kid then winning the Spanish lottery
Genius script writing
Everyone has got their favourites and your able to watch over and over again
Timeless classic comedy at its best 🤩

Crap towards the end, should have finished well before its slow death. Fawlty Towers timeline was spot on and, while Only Fools and Horses was funny, it was nowhere near the class of Fawlty Towers. I’ve watched repeats of Fools and Horses and enjoyed the jokes as much as I enjoy listening to a favourite song, I know all the words. With Fawlty Towers repeats, I’ve noticed little funny scenarios going on in the background that I hadn’t noticed before, genius.

I think it was predictable and unsophisticated pleb fodder of the highest order.
