Mind control - does it exist?

I don't know too much about this topic, but I read somewhere that simply following external events while not focussing on internal events is a form of mind control. It is usually media led whereby a news story receives blanket coverage that draws people in and it gains their attention, and then after some time the coverage will suddenly be dropped and replaced by some new event which becomes a new point of focus. Then a short while after an old news story has ended, people will have little interest in that event, even though their minds were focussed on it at the time it was being covered by the media.

Any behavioural psychologists on here care to chip in?

The "blanket coverage" switch annoys me. A few years ago the most newsworthy story was some disaster in Pakistan - a flood or an earthquake. Apparently millions of them were going to die in the winter because they were abandoned without food or shelter. Then suddenly they were no longer newsworthy and our attention was switched to something else.

I woke up one night about a year after the disaster and suddenly remembered all those poor people who were going to die. "Jesus Christ, what happened to them? " I wondered. I had a quick browse on the net but I couldn't find anything about it. Perhaps they all died and no one cared. Maybe someone saved them all and didn't tell anyone. After searching in vain for any news of them I gave up and watched some lesbian porn instead.

I don't think the "blanket switch" is to do with mind control. I just think people - editors included - just get distracted by other stuff.

It might be a bit leftfield but I think some times when News has been around for a few days/weeks, then more news comes along and people are bored of the previous news (however horrific) that news might be.

In Addition to that, people are "strangely" more interested in news that is closer to them, which is why things such as Pakistan floods might not get a great deal of interest in the UK, whereas a flash flood in Boscastle might do.

Mind control might be the exciting theory but it's much more likely to do with viewing figures and advertising revenues.

How boring.....

Great point.

It often seems to me that whenever some major disaster happens, there is non-stop media coverage, but the news cycle is such, that the media give the appearance of being bored and moves onto the next natural disaster, whilst the victims of the original one are left largely ignored by the media.

Behaviour control exists. It exists so much in life. Through a webstore being a certain colour as different colours portray different emotions. To products being put in specific places, and being stylised. to odours in shops to help you spend more, to music. The way a letter is worded can make you more likely to do what the letter says. There are many many ways to not control, but to push people in a direction.

Heres one of the links I used to help design my webshop. You dont have to delve that deep into this sort of thing to see how easy it is to manipulate a persons behaviour. There are acid types drugs developed that can give pretty much full control over an individual's behavior.

The average human is easily led. Its in our genes we are a sociable animal. And yes of course retail and governments use this. Is it used as much as you might think, Hell no. Is it used by government as a form of propaganda now and again, absolutely.

But to be more on topic. People jsut get bored of a story. Even big stories barely run passed a week. That seems to be the most people keep an interest in something before they get distracted by new news.

Not really, I just noticed a similar pattern with the threads being posted on here, and I wondered if it was a coincidence or not :-)

There were murmurings of the annual gay footabller story yesterday.

Radio 1 were saying that 1 in 10 football fans would refuse to watch their team if they had an openly gay footballer. From some random poll that conducted.

A gay local footballer said he had received abuse on the field because of his gayness. Do you believe that?.

It usually goes like this: Rumours of a premier league player "coming out", mass coverage from every media outlet as they'd be seen to be homophobic if they didn't cover it. Social media filled with "I wonder who it could be?!?!?!"

Nothing happens.

Repeat next year.

They do it every year........without fail.

Another one is when one winter 3 years or so ago, we had wall to wall coverage around the tories killing old people because they caused their poverty and not doing enough to help fuel costs. The very next year not even a sniff of the same story. Like, nothing. No one in mass media cared. In comparison to have none stop coverage of it.

Most people don't give a shit and it's quite possible that the guy giving abuse didn't really give a shit either. But there are enough bellends around, maybe he wanted to get some kind of advantage.

What do you think you're being cynical about? That the gay player is making it up?

It seems to be thing to do at the moment, everyone is gay or transgender on tv or in the news, I'm all for the scales being balanced when it comes to people being fairly represented but like many other things these days the scales are being tipped the other way and that's not right either.
Take this thread for example, from previous posts I would say that none of us are gay, if this thread was on Hollyoaks 4 of us would be gay, 2 bisexual and the op would be going through a sex change :hehe:
