There's a "raft" of clubs after Neil Etheridge....................
according to Wales Online with Birmingham leading the way apparently;-
https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/...nship-18801404
If he does leave, there's surely no need for another keeper - Joe Day can be the back up and George Ratcliffe could be third choice.

Re: There's a "raft" of clubs after Neil Etheridge....................
As good as he is, we need to strengthen in other areas so a decent fee could go towards that
-
Re: There's a "raft" of clubs after Neil Etheridge....................
I can’t see Etheridge being keen on a move to Birmingham, I don’t see them competing at the top end of the championship next season
-
Re: There's a "raft" of clubs after Neil Etheridge....................
didn't we get a hefty offer for him after relegation from a prem team ?
in hindsight would have been great to take that!

I think if that was really true he would have gone

We turned down a lot from Villa, didn't we? I think we will get a decent fee given the amount of clubs in for him and Birmingham have about 30m for Bellingham!

This .... I see no point or benefit of weakening this position in the squad.
If Smithies gets injured early season we're FUBR

Really? **** me, it can't be that difficult a skill to master. Maybe i'm being a bit harsh on Etheridge, but he just couldn't seem to put his foot through the ball for some reason. Smithies has got a right 'Ping' on him, and with direction.

If we're serious about mounting a promotion challenge, then i agree.

We could do something really novel and see if the player being described as the best prospect in the Academy this time last year might be up to the task and I saw quite a lot of Joe Day playing for County where he never struck me as a poor kicker despite playing on an awful pitch. Day was bought here to be back up keeper when it looked like one of Smithies or Etheridge would be leaving and he did well on loan at Wimbledon - I think our need for reinforcements is greater in other positions (e.g. right back).
-
Re: There's a "raft" of clubs after Neil Etheridge....................
The reality is that Etheridge has a year left and rather than lose him for nothing next year, it makes sense financially, particularly as we’ve already been told that most of this summer’s business will be frees, loans & swaps.
The pandemic has made things even worse.
-
Re: There's a "raft" of clubs after Neil Etheridge....................
We obviously need to make cutback on wages especially to add in other positions. It's a no brainer for me if we can get a fee.
-
Re: There's a "raft" of clubs after Neil Etheridge....................
Yep, agreed. Etheridge and Pack/Bamba will both go, as we have cheaper cover available for both positions.
In fact, you can see the wage bill falling almost as you watch - Richards, Ward, and now possibly Ethers and Pack or Bamba. Let's hope they spend that money wisely.

who's going to come in for pack and bamba?

Re: There's a "raft" of clubs after Neil Etheridge....................
Smithies has been absolutely brilliant this season, such a positive. Wouldn't mind Etheridge going, no idea of his wages/contract but should get at least £5M.. no? Although having said I'd be happy for him to go, still think we'd need better back up for Smithies, as someone else has alluded to in this thread, Joe Day - My ****ing god he is awful and stealing a living.
-
Re: There's a "raft" of clubs after Neil Etheridge....................
No surprise.. he's a great stopper and a lovely guy. Sad to see him go if it happens.

It was a comical performance from both Day and Etheridge (what he was thinking charging out of his goal like that when he got injured is beyond me), while Day was so bad Warnock stopped Smithies from going out on loan

Sounds complicated, much rather throw £10k a week at some 35 year old journeyman to sit on the bench

With a year left on Etheridge’s contract, we’re more likely to get in the region of £2m, which sounds like a familiar number*...
As for the others, I’d like to see Pack, White and Flint moved on. Bamba will probably stay as a player/coach.
*Kieffer Moore transfer fee.

It is absolutely amazing how Warnock found the one goalkeeper in the football league that is worse at kicking than Etheridge. Day wasn't really at fault for the goals but I am so glad Etheridge got injured, Smithies has been marvellous.

And their John Lewis is closing in the Bullring .

Re: There's a "raft" of clubs after Neil Etheridge....................
Ultimately he's far too good for the bench in the championship. He should be starting for a good Championship club and if it wasn't for the form and quality of Smithies then he would be for us.

I'd happily take £2m for Etheridge in the current climate.

Re: There's a "raft" of clubs after Neil Etheridge....................
While Etheridge's kicking is very poor I hadn't noticed Smithies kicking being any better. Whoever distributes the ball gives possession away to the opposition.
-
Re: There's a "raft" of clubs after Neil Etheridge....................
Etheridge has been superb for us. The negative comments make my blood boil.
-
Re: There's a "raft" of clubs after Neil Etheridge....................
I'd keep Etheridge, the thought of Day having to play doesn't fill me with confidence. As for George Ratcliffe I think he got left out at Barry at the end of last season? Interesting that Smithies, Etheridge and Day are all the same age, 29. I'd try and offload Day and his £4.5k pw wages (allegedly).

You don't see the point of selling our backup goalkeeper (whose contract runs out in less than a year) when we don't have a starting right-back?

Nope they've got nothing to do with one another. Your acting as if it's your money & you'd wilfully weaken one area of the squad that's strong & doesn't need tinkering with. I fully agree we need a right back & an attacking midfield player but I don't understand the rush to get rid of Etheridge. There's nothing you or I can do to influence this situation, Vincent will control the destiny of the spend, no-one else.

It does make sense if we get a decent bid though, he'll be on decent wages and any money gained/saved could go toward more pressing issues

He'll be on about 20k a week and we could get say 2m for him. If we can get a 1m right back and a 1m right winger for that on 10k each, that's good business in my book.

Re: There's a "raft" of clubs after Neil Etheridge....................
I'd like to be proved wrong, but I think £2 million for Etheridge in the last year of his contract is very optimistic in the current financial climate, I'd be happy with half that.

Perhaps, if there’s a bit of a bidding war from this “raft of clubs”, the price might be nudged up a bit ?

Seemingly, Swansea only bid £500k for Jamal Lowe and it was reported that Wigan were prepared to accept £750k for him - that's someone who was a regular selection as an attacking player for a team that may have been relegated, but actually had a record which would have seen them finish thirteenth. The sheer lack of deals being done and figures like those I've quoted suggest a very depressed market in the Football League and I'm not sure that there will be many clubs below the upper echelons of the Championship who will be willing to spend seven figure sums on a goalkeeper.
A couple of things about City goalkeepers, are those writing off Joe Day basing their opinion on one game at Wigan or are they also going by what they saw of him at Newport? I thought Day was good at League 2 level, in County's FA Cup runs and, by all accounts, he did well in League One last season in a struggling AFC Wimbledon team. Also, I rated George Ratcliffe as City's best keeper with the ball at his feet when he was 16 or 17 - the mistakes I saw him make in that department were all to do with him being over confident because he was so comfortable with having to build from the back.
