O/T Deacon Blue - Dignity
-
Re: O/T Deacon Blue - Dignity
It is s good song, great lyrics. They wrote some tidy stuff. I'd put them in the same bracket as prefab sprout and the blue Nile, although a little more commercial in my opinion. Paddy mcaloon of prefab sprout was streets ahead in my opinion, especially with his song writing. He wrote some fantastic songs. Very underated.

Re: O/T Deacon Blue - Dignity
The Blue Nile- great band, probably one of the best ever to come out of Scotland. Tinseltown In The Rain an all time classic track. Paul Buchanan has one of the best voices I’ve ever heard.

Had The Blue Nile on this week, their first two records are great. Prefab Sprout have a ton of top tunes, class band.
Later era Paddy McAloon stuff is tidy too. If you’ve got 20mins spare I’d recommend giving this a go: https://youtu.be/1bSPNboKCzM

His best in my opinion
Life's not complete till your hearts missed a beat
And you will never get it back
Or turn back the clock
Fabulous melody and lyrics

Fantastic tune. Listen to it often. In fact, I'm going to listen to it right right now.

Absolutely made up that there are fellow sprout fans on here. I liked them when i was a kid, they didn't translate that well commercially, took plenty of stick from my mates :hehe: How about 'All The World Loves Lovers'

So sad to see his decline in health 😢

I think he's better now. The albums were recently re-released and was talking about them, seemed in relatively fine fettle. Supposedly a new album on the horizon too, although these days, perhaps understandably, they seem a bit more thrown together/lacking in his earlier perfectionism. Steve McQueen still my favourite album by anyone.

Third album really good too. Fourth was poor IMO, although it was well received, so that might just be me.

That album is in my top 10 ever, probably top 5. What was it called over there?

Re: O/T Deacon Blue - Dignity
Always thought Deacon Blue were a bit twee, but I agree that Dignity is a great song. Agree with the comments about Prefab Sprout in this thread as well.

Re: O/T Deacon Blue - Dignity
I am sure I have tickets to see them . (Cancelled through covid)
Thought I had missed the gig.

The Blue Nile made two especially good albums, still sound like they were made yesterday.

Re: O/T Deacon Blue - Dignity
If you take then give back good
If you steal be a Robin Hood
Appetite, another great song

Re: O/T Deacon Blue - Dignity
I always thought Deacon Blue were a poor man's Prefab Sprout - a band that should have been much more successful than they were.
I'm a big Steely Dan fan, and Deacon Blue took their name from a track off the Dan's 'Aja' Album, which is my least favourite (despite, or maybe because of, the fact that everyone else seems to drool over it), so they were always on a hiding to nothing.

Peg is a fantastic song off that album , never knew it wasn't Walter Becker who did the amazing solo

Lorraine McIntosh? She was stunning back then.
They produced some really good stuff for a while… I still have their Burt Bacharach covers vinyl EP … they did a great version of ‘I’ll never fall in love again’. Loved their first 2 albums too… Think I probably just prefer ‘When the world knows your name’ to ‘Raintown’.
Have a bit of Prefab Sprout stuff as well and I get why they might be preferred, but for me Deacon Blue were better, but I’d make an honourable mention for both Aztec Camera and Orange Juice (well Roddy Frame and Edwyn Collins anyway)

Chocolate Girl is a great song.
Ship Called Dignity is a really good one- resonates for me …
Deacon Blue played St David’s Hall a couple of years back. They were excellent.
Love Prefab Sprout too.
Nice to see others appreciate them too 👍

Re: O/T Deacon Blue - Dignity
Dignity, I seem to recall, was one of the first songs I remember being advertised (as in a paid advert, not on a play list) non stop on commercial radio. Not sure what channel.

Re: O/T Deacon Blue - Dignity
There were a lot of these pop-rock or pop-soul bands from the mid to late 80s dominating the uk charts that were influenced or inspired by Steely Dan.
One band from that era and very much overlooked
