Can any body please tell me what a good speed is meant to be in further to Peajays question ad well please. Hope you don't mind Peajay...
If you’re streaming telly then yes.
Anything over 20 meg is required I’d say for streaming
If you're into gaming or have a young un in the house (like me who has a teenager permanently glued to online xbox) I'd say you will. If you (ahem) download films etc whilst others are online Id say yes. If you have a couple of family members all online the same time all streaming from iplayer etc Id say yes. The smart Tv works seamlessy on it too.
As for speed, Im not teccy enough to know the minimum requirements but I get wifi access upstairs through thick old walls at 25mbs and wired access at 75mbs and its perfect for our family needs. Whether thats overkill I dont know but its what i get on BT infinity and their new hub is brilliant for coverage all through the house. I would change it and downgrade.
30mb+ is essential if you download and upload large files, are gaming, constantly streaming etc.
I didnt. Only go it as they threw it in on my last deal.
My EE is giving a speed of 18 download according to a line test thing my wife did just now. I am not in the know tech wise but I am a good complainer on the phone. Should I get on to them can they do anything about this. I stream,, browse my wife streams, browses but my son us on his pc, X box every spare minute on COD, FIFA etc. He says speed is shit really with occasional lag but being a teenager has got no solutions, suggestions for me. Any ideas please.Thanks.
Yes, you should
I used to get 1.3 meg  upgraded and now get 36 - 38 meg
Now we couldnt stream anything with 1.3, it would buffer like hell ( even at 720 ) now imagine the 2 children watching Youtube or the youngest doing coding on her Chromebook, i would often find normal surfing hard work
now its flying, 2 lots of NowTV streaming, 1 on youtube and it still flys
I'm currently getting 8.2 meg per second, so bound to see an improvement.
means you can download shitloads of stuff very quickly.
if you want to watch a HD programme on catch up on Sky it's ready to watch in a few seconds
My BT gets maybe 60mb downloads. We can download catch up on SkyQ, watch live streaming football on the PC and have four laptops running with no delay at the same time.
If the poster phones up and complains that his speed is low, he will be asked to try it again with no other activity taking place. My speed sits at 60 mb/s when the house is empty, but plunges to about 28 mb/s when everyone is home and using it. I'd look a right wally if I phoned up to complain at the time that PS4, streaming, and all other stuff is taking place.
indeed
mine was sold as upto 52 meg, i get 36 - 38 meg, which is a fair % drop below the max, but I am happy with the speed, its a hell of alot better than 1.3 meg  My mrs said we should contact them and see what they can do, i still havent got around to it, i might never get around to it
Get him one of these

Joe Google "tp link power line adapter"
Plug one into the box downstairs then one into the wall in his room and run an Ethernet cable to it...
No problem fella.
Worked wonders for me when we had sky 37 meg fibre as it didn't travel too well upstairs over WiFi..android box was a no go but the ps4 was sort of ok.
BT 57 meg is tip top I've binned the tp links.
Got a few phones/tablets/bt box streaming/smart tv/ ps4 on another tv and got no complaints.
I've got virgin fibre optic connection and it is super fast. someone told me it depends where you live too but I don't know if that is true. When it was fist installed one of their guys who I know came round to check it forme and it was over 100. I never have a problem with it normally.
ISP's have a max speed that they put on your line, this does not mean that they cannot increase your speed if they wish to do so, the excuse they use is that it is the max speed on your line that will give you a stable connection, I had this problem with BT, and had to chase them up to increase the max line speed, but since changing to Plusnet, my contract says up to 70mbs I am getting 68mbs, if you are using a VPN then the speed will drop slightly, obviously it all depends on how far you are from the exchange and where your nearest green cabinet is positioned:thumbup:
I can see that green box from my house. About 300 meters. I will ring them when I get home I think. I didn't pay my bill once for months because they cut us off aftet they lost a payment that we made. We had to prove we made it although they wouldn't put the internet back on for me to email them proof. Then I got through to a good lad who said I will give you 3 months free internet by way of apology. He didn't leave a note on the system so a dd still went out
They denied agreeing to it so they had to listen to the tapes which proved it and gave me a refund and a £100 pound credit to my account. They also failed to book a BT repair properly another time which ended with them supplying free mobile data in the interim and another account credit. Maybe I should switch. I want to start watching internet based tv but again don't know that much about it. Reading this it would be worthless with my current speeds.
ive got BT Infinity. Does the trick for all of us. Eldest daughter is always streaming Netflix, had to move the youngest daughters room around as the TV wasn’t picking up Netflix at the back of the house but now she can get it too so we are sometimes streaming 3 TVs at the same time if I’m on Netflix or Kodi.
Can’t say I notIced any difference in internet speed on my phone though compared to previous when I was with standard Sky Broadband.
BT did send me an email recently to say they’ve boosted me to 76 mps but I checked on my app last night when no one was streaming and was getting 54 max.
Can they only stream 76 to certain areas?
I genuinely think you don’t need more the. 25-30 and that’s if There’s a few of you using it.
I laugh when virgin promises 300, not even schools and hospitals have that, absolutely no need and Virgin are full of shite when it comes to their speeds
If anyone is thinking of going Fibre, We love BT, the free BT hotspots all over are great, I have one on the school pickup, so i can watch Now TV sat in my van while waiting for daughter to arrive, I have even found a hotspot near where she plays netball, so i can stream on that
