Hidden Cardiff with Will Mallard
On tonight BBC 1 at 9.
Looks like an interesting programme if you like your local history. Exploring the City's underground canals, railway tunnels and war time bunkers.

Re: Hidden Cardiff with Will Mallard
Great programme, I knew about the room above Burger King, and I'd rumours of a nuclear bunker but wow. Can't believe we Have so much history hidden away.

Re: Hidden Cardiff with Will Mallard
You wouldn't catch me down that first tunnel he went down, which he wouldn't tell us where it was (looked like the dock feeder near greyfriars), it was a bit snug.

I wouldn't have fitted into that gap in the first place

Re: Hidden Cardiff with Will Mallard
I didn't watch the show but I can only presume he gave a full account of the origins of Cardiff's famous Fried Potato Road.

I can only assume you are referring to Caroline Alley? Apparently the locals refer to it as Chip Shop Street, a sign of being a true Cardiffian.

Re: Hidden Cardiff with Will Mallard
Just watched it on IPlayer, what a fantastic programme. Ashamed to say that apart from Insole Court (I walk my dog around there now and again), I knew nothing about most of the places he visited and only a vague knowledge of the others - amazed to learn what is below Tescos at Culverhouse Cross!

Re: Hidden Cardiff with Will Mallard
I have been in the bunker on top of the Wenallt when I worked for BT,scary place even in 70s.The map table was still in place then.I have also walked through Wenvoe tunnel not long after it closed and then along the line to Walnut Tree Viaduct at Taff's Well.

I've come across the Wenallt bunker before on a site on the internet, about fifteen or so years ago. By the photographs that were on it, there was a lot more to it, than what was shown on the programme last night?

Re: Hidden Cardiff with Will Mallard
In the last place he visited, some nuclear war room thing, CCFC was sprayed on one of the walls.

A room above Burger King,a clock that doesn't work, some tunnels and some bunkers,Cardiff has less history than a white dog turd.

You're right there, 90% of the citys growth is very recent. Most if not all other similar sized cities would probably have more interesting history.

Is this on catch up anywhere ?

Well obviously it has more history than that ffs :hehe:
The point of the programme was to point out that much of the City's history has been lost to development and that we should look after what we have. I mean it's a crying shame that Insole Court has to be rescued from potentially being demolished.

Shame that room above Burger King isn't still the pub it once was, the green lizard was it? I guess BK just lease the building I wonder who owns it? And that bunker in llandaff how is that still there? And why? Surely it would have been demolished by now and had houses in it?? Prime land and all

Re: Hidden Cardiff with Will Mallard
was a great show, i was hoping they would have touched on some of the history in the old arcades of the city, morgan and royal arcade for example.. or maybe they did but didnt get the permission to film, i know for a fact of the tunnels and so on under the arcades and howells store...
i knew about the mahogany room above burger king seen a bit of it with my own eyes, its pretty awsome sight
and they have an oak room above royal arcade which some folks dont realize is there, theres an old library at one end, some call it the old chapel, but it would have been an old library 1st, when that lost interest no doubt folks would have used it as a chapel for sure... ther old library is above the royal on st marys st end but the old oak room is above the royal arcade on the hayes end... heres an old pic of it back in david morgans days... there are 50 odd appartments there now but rest assured the oak room is still there too

I thought it was very interesting. I'd love to see how Cardiff was back before the taff wasn't moved. Fascinates me, wish they would make a reenactment drama series or something..
