That line ‘I wasn’t there that morning when my father passed away’ gets me, I didn’t make it to the Infirmary in time on the morning he went.

I Bet Mate.
Couldn’t get home in time for my Mother’s passing. (They sent me back to America about 3 weeks before hand)
Anyway....that song is indeed a choker.

Nimrod for me as well.
Strange that for such a beautiful piece of music I just now associate it with sad times ( played at so many funerals).

The Smiths have a few tracks that really cut it in the tear-jerker stakes.
'Last night I dreamt...'
'There is a light that never goes out'
'I know it's over'
And many more...
It's odd, because they can also be so very, very funny.

Re: What music gets to you at a sad time
Myfanwy - memories of my late mother.
The second verse of the hymn "How great thou art":
When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze
Although my father died 25 years ago I still cannot sing this verse as I get a lump in my throat. It brings back so many memories.

When my partner was dying from alzheimer's in sat by her bed,
although she was not awake i think she was aware of music,
i played "you are my sunshine" over and over cos she always laughed at the extra "when skys are gray" we added at City matches
that and Fix You by coldplay
both songs well me up when i hear them

Re: What music gets to you at a sad time
“When I am Laid in Earth” also known as Dido’s Lament from the opera Dido and Aeneas by Purcell. Often played in instrumental form on occasions such as Remembrance Day but not anywhere near as moving when sung. I also remember seeing on TV Grace Kelly’s funeral in 1982 with Prince Rainier sitting on his own with tears streaming down his face whilst an orchestra played Barber’s Adagio for Strings. Very moving.

Didn’t recognise this tune so went straight to google.
Thank you so much for making me aware of such a stunning piece of music.
Aside from the classical version I found a very moving interpretation by Annie Lennox with the City of London choir.
Made my Sunday morning .

Oddly enough I thought of Annie Lennox when this thread came up. Her "Hurting Time" gets me every time.

My Nan had How Great Thou Art played at her funeral about 25 years ago, so has always struck a chord with me.
About a month after the funeral we attended a friends wedding. I didn't know it was used as a wedding hymn aswell, so a few people in the congregation turned around to wonder what all this sniffling was from the back of the church.

Henryk Górecki: Symphony of Sorrowful Songs - 2nd Movement
Sung by Dawn Upshaw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5fg8-VWNo0
Words from the 3 Movements;
First Movement
My son, my chosen and beloved
Share your wounds with your mother
And because, dear son, I have always carried you in my heart,
And always served you faithfully
Speak to your mother, to make her happy,
Although you are already leaving me, my cherished hope.
(Lamentation of the Holy Cross Monastery from the "Lysagóra Songs" collection. Second half of the 15th century)
Second Movement
No, Mother, do not weep,
Most chaste Queen of Heaven
Support me always.
"Zdrowas Mario." (*)
(Prayer inscribed on wall 3 of cell no. 3 in the basement of "Palace," the Gestapo's headquarters in Zadopane; beneath is the signature of Helena Wanda Blazusiakówna, and the words "18 years old, imprisoned since 26 September 1944.")
(*) "Zdrowas Mario" (Ave Maria)—the opening of the Polish prayer to the Holy Mother
Third Movement
Where has he gone
My dearest son?
Perhaps during the uprising
The cruel enemy killed him
Ah, you bad people
In the name of God, the most Holy,
Tell me, why did you kill
My son?
Never again
Will I have his support
Even if I cry
My old eyes out
Were my bitter tears
to create another River Oder
They would not restore to life
My son
He lies in his grave
and I know not where
Though I keep asking people
Everywhere
Perhaps the poor child
Lies in a rough ditch
and instead he could have been
lying in his warm bed
Oh, sing for him
God's little song-birds
Since his mother
Cannot find him
And you, God's little flowers
May you blossom all around
So that my son
May sleep happily
(Folk song in the dialect of the Opole region)

The second verse has huge significance to me. My Dad was in the 8th Army in WW2 and he went through North Africa, Italy and eventually was demobbed in Austria. He loved nature and we have a picture postcard which he sent from Austria to my mother which shows steep sided mountains rising up dramatically from a tranquil valley and he writes rapturously about the scene. The contrast for a lad who grew up in the Cynon valley in the 20's and 30's could not have been greater surely!
