Re: Squad numbers confirmed. #7 retired.
No number changes into the ‘main’ 11 for Colwill, Watters or Isaak Davies 😬
-
Re: Squad numbers confirmed. #7 retired.
No number 9? Striker incoming 🤔🤔
-
Re: Squad numbers confirmed. #7 retired.
No number 4 either - being held back for Sean Morrison 🤔
-
Re: Squad numbers confirmed. #7 retired.
I'm pretty sure the #7 shirt was already retired last season.

Why would the club announce it was being retired now if they already did it last season (which they didn't - see other posts re Bacuna).

I wouldn't read anything into that, a lot of players like to keep their first squad numbers (think McCormack 44, Ampadu also 44, Alexander-Arnold 66 etc).
I believe Isaak Davies in particular wears 39 because it was Bellamy's number.

So, nothing new there then.

Re: Squad numbers confirmed. #7 retired.
Nice gesture, I still find it hard to believe what happened to Whitts.

Kit looks quite nice in that picture

Re: Squad numbers confirmed. #7 retired.
If any player deserved their number retired it’s Whitts. A top class player and on the few occasions I interacted with him, a top class gent.
Truly a Cardiff city legend that will be talked about for decades.

Same here and I’m not a Cardiff fan. A good thing to do but still awful that he lost his life at such a young age and in an innocuous fashion.

Re: Squad numbers confirmed. #7 retired.
Right decision from the club.

Good points about keeping favourite numbers. However, as a show of support/confidence in Colwill especially, I’d have liked to see him handed a ‘main man’ squad number.

I think that goes against how Morison seems to want to handle the youngsters.
he wants them to always be striving to improve and not think that they've already made it

Re: Squad numbers confirmed. #7 retired.
When I go in the Park Hotel, where Whitts had his tragic fall, I still find it difficult to believe what happened and how his life, was cut short too early. It was only a few weeks later, that all pubs were shut as a result if COVID.

Re: Squad numbers confirmed. #7 retired.
Don’t always agree with retiring numbers, Birmingham City with Jude Bellingham as a perfect example.
But Whitts deserves it, probably our greatest ever player who went so tragically. Well done the club.
Who’s the number 9 then 👀

That was odd.
Whitts makes sense, legend of the club (I don’t say that lightly)

Re: Squad numbers confirmed. #7 retired.
I don’t agree with retiring numbers, surely the best way of honouring Whitt’s and the number would be a worthy talent wearing it and being inspired by him? Granted, I don’t see that player in this squad, but we all know that some player in the next season or two is going to want the number and get it, so what’s the point?

I think Ronaldo will be arriving the same time as Bale, so you could be on to something.

Re: Squad numbers confirmed. #7 retired.
Bellingham's being retired was embarrassing, I can see why the club did this, although I'd prefer a stand named after him

A 'Whittingham 7' shirt to be hung up in the changing room for every home and away match this season.
Morison's suggestion it seems (part of the proposal to retire the No 7) and supported by the Board.
They hope it will inspire the squad. Hopefully it will, even if hardly any of them will have played alongside Whitts.

That's superb fair play

Re: Squad numbers confirmed. #7 retired.
Aren't we in danger of going a little over the top here? Yes, he was a great servant to the club, and his death was a tragic accident, but retiring a shirt number? Hanging his kit in the changing room? Really? Most of the players in the squad this season will have no idea who he was.
-
Re: Squad numbers confirmed. #7 retired.
But isn't that exactly the point? There's 13 new faces in the dressing room and SM needs to embed a Cardiff culture. No better way than constantly reminding them about someone we see as a legend for the club.
